119 Gallery is excited to embrace... Change. As an innovative organization that promotes emerging art and artists, we have always had our eye on the future. Like individuals, organizations grow and change. 119 Gallery has moved before. We continue to EVOLVE-- 911 Gallery > 119 Gallery > Indy > Boston > Lowell... What's next?- 119 Gallery will be leaving its Chelmsford Street location.

119 Gallery is bigger than it looks. Over our 20-year history, the founders, board, and staff have created a world-wide community that is not defined by any single location. We are a trailblazing, non-profit organization that promotes innovative artists, art, and ideas. Named for its 911 E. Main Street address, 911 Gallery opened in 1992, and showcased cutting-edge new media art. In 1994, the gallery gained a world-wide reputation by being among the first art galleries to exhibit on the web. After relocating to Boston, our exhibitions were published nationally, and on the cover of Art New England.

119 Gallery opened in Lowell nine years ago, renamed for its new address. Bridging traditional and new media, "from fiber art to cyber art," we introduce our visitors to art unlike any they have experienced before. People from all backgrounds participate in our exhibitions, performances, and community events. More than 3000 visitors and 500 artists and performers visit each year, from as far away as Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan. They are listed in our website.

119 Gallery's Lowell location has been its most successful incarnation yet! The staff and board are proud to have worked with so many exceptional artists, from our own enthusiastically creative community, and beyond. With the help of these local artists and organizations, and our volunteers and interns, 119 Gallery has grown, fostered others, and incubated new venues and emerging artists of every discipline and age. Blazing new paths, the board and founders look forward to collaborating with organizations throughout the region. Ideally, these collaborators will have the numbers 1 and 9 in their address.

We will continue to remain active in Lowell! Home is where you hang your [he]ART.  Opening in September is an exhibition of new prints and paintings by Justin Campaniello and Olivia Stanislas, curated by Victoria Belakhov. All three are UMass Lowell art students, and have exhibited at the gallery. Justin and Vicky were 119 Gallery interns. Please stop by and meet them during Lowell Open Studios. On view after that, as part of Lowell Celebrates Kerouac, is an exhibit of Kerouac inspired images by Artist Cat de Leon.

You can keep up with future developments, as always, online. 119 Gallery is accessible beyond our walls. As for the building's owners and gallery founders, Walter Wright and Mary Ann Kearns? The hope the building is sold to someone interested in keeping it a mixed-used, live-work space. They plan to design a new space, this time from the ground up -- their residence. We wish them the best, and are happy to support their personal growth as they have supported everyone who comes through 119 Gallery's doors.
