Featured Presentation
An Interdisciplinary Hands-on Approach to
Whole-living Environmental Education
Joe Franzen, Multidisciplinary Educator

Joe Franzen has been an environmental teacher at Fern Creek High school for several years.  Along with fellow teacher, Brent Peters, their students raise an organic garden, operate a greenhouse, raise chickens and ducks, and learn to preserve and cook food from the garden, greenhouse and farm yard to learn self-sufficiency,  They also study sustainability in global issues, comparing their farm-to-table food with food raised in unsustainable methods. Teaching goals include how to live a sustainable lifestyle, how to determine how one's lifestyle affects the environment, and, overall, how to protect Earth..

Over the past several years, Joe has developed a program based in Food Studies to connect students to the outside world, linking their individual behaviors to the larger current global issues of sustainability, environmental degradation, social justice, poverty, hunger, food epidemics, and climate change.

As students engage and personalize these connections, Franzen provides his own urban homestead as a laboratory and an example to explore and experiment with the quest for a more sustainable lifestyle. With the first of these students graduating from the program, they have begun entering institutions and occupations with this new foundation.

Now in its ninth year, the purposes of the Louisville Sustainability Forum are:
1. We hold and promote the intention of sustainability for Louisville.
2. We establish and nourish relationships that strengthen
community and create change.
3. We create a space for discussion that inspires, motivates and deepens
our ability to catalyze social change.

Tree Triage in Cherokee Park

Bring a friend to volunteer with you, or come on your own and make some new friends! Gloves, tools, and guidance provided by Olmsted Parks Conservancy. On the first Monday of each month, after the project, plan to join us for some FREE pizza and munchies while supplies last, courtesy of Mellow Mushroom (May 12, June 2, July 7, August 4, September 1).

Get outside and join Olmsted Parks Conservancy staff in an effort to save the trees in Cherokee Park! Timing is critical because invasive vines need to be removed before they seed and produce more vines. Gloves, tools, and guidance provided. Dress for weather and working outdoors.

Sunday, May 15, 6 - 8pm
Louisville Time Bank Potluck Dinner
Highlands Community Campus 1228 E Breckinridge 40204

Potlucks are a big part of the TimeBank community. We come together to share food, fun and build community all at the same time. Members get to know each other, and people who are not members can learn a bit about timebanking from chatting with our members at the potluck. Many exchanges get set up at our potlucks too!

We always encourage members to bring guests, and all community members are welcome too!

Please bring a dish that serves 12 and your own table service to make clean-up easier (if you forget, there is plenty to borrow from the kitchen).

The parking lot is behind the building, with the entrance to the parking off of Barrett Avenue. The entrance to the building is also in the back of the building.

Greater Louisville Sierra Club presents
Hugh Archer, Director of Kentucky Natural Lands Trust
Clifton Center, 2nd Floor,  2117 Payne Street, 40206

Please join us as we welcome Hugh Archer, Executive Director of Kentucky Natural Lands Trust. KNLT began 20 years ago when a group of friends came together to protect Blanton Forest, the Commonwealth's largest known old-growth forest. The endeavor resulted in the establishment of a state nature preserve that continues to grow in size with KNLT's assistance. Land protection is KNLT's primary goal, with an aim to protect large forest tracts and migratory corridors. KNLT works to protect, connect and restore wildlands that embody the natural beauty and heritage of our state, from the eastern mountains to the western swamps. Current projects include the Pine Mountain Wildlands Corridor, Blanton Forest, and the Bernheim-Fort Knox Wildlands Corridor.

Hugh Archer has been involved with KNLT since its inception. He served as Chairman of its board for many years and became Executive Director in 2005. Some of Hugh's other positions have included: Director of the KY Chapter of The Nature Conservancy; chair of the State Nature Preserves Commission; executive director of the Kentucky River Authority; and commissioner of the state Department of Natural Resources.

Greater Louisville Sierra Club's programs are always
free and open to the public.

Please join us.

at Peace Ed located in Central Church, 318 West Kentucky Street, 40203

Know a 12 - 17 year old who might be interested

The PeaceCasters camp is designed to build skills while also providing a fun experience.  Activities will include plenty of cooperative games and visits from some special guests such as youth activists and local experts from the world of videography and filmmaking.

Participants must be ready and willing to interact in small groups.
