Earth Talks explores
The Legacy of Luna by Julia Butterfly Hill
The loft, 107 Crescent Avenue, 40206

For April we will explore the Julia Butterfly Hill's autobiographical The Legacy of Luna.  It's an inspiring story and a great read.

On December 18, 1999, Julia Butterfly Hill's feet touched the ground for the first time in over two years, as she descended from "Luna," a thousand-year-old redwood in Humboldt County, California.

Hill had climbed 180 feet up into the tree high on a mountain on December 10, 1997, for what she thought would be a two- to three-week-long "tree-sit." The action was intended to stop Pacific Lumber, a division of the Maxxam Corporation, from the environmentally destructive process of clear-cutting the ancient redwood and the trees around it. The area immediately next to Luna had already been stripped, and because, as many believed, nothing was left to hold the soil to the mountain, a huge part of the hill had slid into the town of Stafford, wiping out many homes.

Over the course of what turned into an historic civil action, Hill endured El Nino storms, helicopter harassment, a ten-day siege by company security guards, and the tremendous sorrow brought about by an old-growth forest's destruction. This story--written while she lived on a tiny platform eighteen stories off the ground--is one that only she can tell.

Kentuckians for the Commonwealth
with Mary Love

Kentuckians For The Commonwealth is a 34-year-old statewide grassroots organization with 10,000 members across Kentucky and 13 local chapters. Our membership is open to all people who are committed to equality, democracy and non-violent change.  We believe in the power of people, working together, to challenge injustices, right wrongs, and improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians.

KFTC is vision-based and solution-oriented. We use a set of core strategies, from leadership development to communications and voter empowerment, to impact a broad range of issues, including coal and water, new energy and transition, economic justice and voting rights.  We believe that we have the opportunity to build New Power in Kentucky - with a more authentic democracy, a just and sustainable economy, and a clean energy future. At the same time, we work to oppose injustice and end destructive practices

Mary Love has been a KFTC member since 2007. She has served as the Jefferson County Chapter's steering committee representative and is currently on the board of Kentucky Coalition, the 501c3 arm of KFTC. Mary is also a member of several of KFTC's statewide committees including the Land Reform Committee, New Energy and Transition Committee, and the Leadership Development Committee.

The Louisville Share Fest 2 - 5 pm
Followed by Louisville Time Bank Pot Luck 6 pm
Highland Community Campus, 1228 E Breckenridge Rd, 40204

The Louisville Share Fest is a collaboration between the Louisville TimeBank and Shareable. It is to celebrate sharing economy solutions and community organizations that are supportive of economic resiliency in Louisville. Especially encouraged to apply are cooperative businesses and non profits, co-share work or home space collectives,  CSA farms, and economic and food justice organizations as well as less structured groups who share -- meaning you don't need to be a big formal organization to be here.

Sign up to volunteer at the event, have a table for an organization
or ask us a question about the Share Fest.

Louisville TimeBank Members will earn Time Credits for their participation in the Share Fest!

Set up is 12:30 PM, with the Fest starting at 2 pm, winding down at 5:30, with our potluck afterwards. All participants in the Share Fest are invited to stay at our potluck, where the TimeBank will make sure there is dinner for you as thanks for participating.

There is no fee to either attend or table at the Share Fest

Sunday, April 10, 6 - 8pm
Louisville Time Bank Potluck Dinner
Highlands Community Campus 1228 E Breckinridge 40204

Potlucks are a big part of the TimeBank community. We come together to share food, fun and build community all at the same time. Members get to know each other, and people who are not members can learn a bit about timebanking from chatting with our members at the potluck. Many exchanges get set up at our potlucks too!

We always encourage members to bring guests, and all community members are welcome too!

Please bring a dish that serves 12 and your own table service to make clean up easier (if you forget, there is plenty to borrow from the kitchen).

The parking lot is behind the building, with the entrance to the parking off of Barrett Avenue. The entrance to the building is also in the back of the building.

White Environmentalists Acting for Racial Justice: The Sequel
A Follow-up LSURJ/350Louisville Workshop
St. William Catholic Church, 1226 West Oak St. 40210

"To Change Everything We Need Everyone." Embody this powerful climate change slogan by participating in this second training for white environmentalists. It is open to interested white persons, whether you attended the first training or not. Please RSVP.

The training will be conducted by "Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice" (LSURJ). The goal is to strengthen the Louisville environmental community's work on climate change and other earth-care issues through racial justice action and accountable relationship-building with communities of color. The format will be interactive and workshop-like.

Let's face it: many of us who work on environmental issues are privileged white people. But much of the significant work on these issues has been led by people-of-color organizations and communities that are most effected by environmental injustice. Since last October's Peoples Climate March, there have been some small steps toward breaking down our racial barriers. This workshop is part of that ongoing work.

LSURJ is part of the group "Showing Up for Racial Justice" (SURJ). "SURJ is a national network of groups and individuals organizing White people for racial justice. Through community organizing, mobilizing, and education, SURJ moves White people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability."

*Note that the Derby Festival Mini-Marathon is the morning of Apr. 30th.
Please consider taking the expressway to 9th St., going south to Oak St. ramp then west to St. William at 12th and Oak to avoid any late street closures in Old Louisville.
