The Cosmic Christ:
Exploring a Vision for All People
with Jud Hendrix and Mark Steiner

March Wednesday Lunch Sessions (Brown Bag)

The Loft, 107 Crescent Avenue

For over two thousand years, the symbol and mythology of Christ has provided inspiration and a path to wholeness. However, there is a growing rejection of this tradition and its limiting image of Christ for the 21st Century.  This conversation, using Matthew Fox's book, The Coming of the Cosmic Christ, as inspiration, is designed to re-engage the central figure of Jesus and the emerging images of the "Christ."

This lunch time conversation is designed for those who have rejected a traditional understanding of Christ, as well as those who remain in the Christian tradition but are looking for a more inclusive understanding and a more relevant model for their life journey.

March 4   - Who is the Cosmic Christ?
March 11 - Mysticism as a Path to Awakening
March 18 - The Cosmic Christ and Spiritual Activism

For further information and the full March calendar of activities at the Loft visit their website.

VermiCulture Makers Club Exhibit
849 Gallery at the Kentucky School of Art

VermiCulture Makers Club is an exhibition of art, new media, DIY design, music, and
participatory projects, celebrating the connections between humans and worms. Artist Amy Youngs, who has been making work with composting worms for over ten years, exhibits her recent projects that interface worms with our domestic spaces. As beneficial waste processors, fertilizer producers and greenhouse gas reducers, worm colonies are invited into the home, workplace, art studio and gallery as collaborators and as models for living more sensitively with ecosystems.

Selected creative works of her former students and worm-appreciating colleagues
will be represented in the exhibition, along with a call for additional work that can be submitted via social media by anyone in the world using the #wormculture tag. Visitors to the exhibition can participate in the "worm selfie station", rock in a chair that powers a hydroponic worm ecosystem, watch worm webcam movies, and take inspiration from a variety of experimental worm bin designs and vermicultural artifacts. At the close of the exhibition, VermiCulture Prizes will be awarded to the best new culture created for, or about, composting worms.

The exhibit runs through April 17. Here is a link to the details on the Kentucky School of Art site.

#502kindness Week Challenge

Join Parents for Social Justice as we challenge ourselves to brighten the community of Louisville for a week with some random acts of kindness. We are challenging the community of Louisville to do one act of kindness every day for a week (March 15-22) and help us document the love on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We will post suggestions and tips beforehand on the Facebook event page, and please feel free to post your own ideas there as well. You can also use that event page to plan family or individual meet-ups and do some acts while making some friends!

These can be random or planned acts of kindness; they can be big or small; they can be for strangers; they can be for ones you know and love or ones you know and don't love quite as much. The only requirements are as follows:

1) They are done with love, humility and a smile.
2) Invite at least 5 people to join us.
3) You help us document it on Facebook, twitter and Instagram with #502kindness.

Social Change Book Club explores
Transformative Scenario Planning:
Working Together to Change the Future by Adam Kahane
Heine Bros. Coffee, 119 Chenoweth Lane, St Matthews

People who are trying to solve tough economic, social, and environmental problems often find themselves frustratingly stuck. They can't solve their problems in their current context, which is too unstable or unfair or unsustainable. They can't transform this context on their own-it's too complex to be grasped or shifted by any one person or organization or sector. And the people whose cooperation they need don't understand or agree with or trust them or each other.

Transformative scenario planning is a powerful new methodology for dealing with these challenges. It enables us to transform ourselves and our relationships and thereby the systems of which we are a part. At a time when divisions within and among societies are producing so many people to get stuck and to suffer, it offers hope-and a proven approach-for moving forward together.

Transformative scenario planning works by transforming understanding first. The collective synthesis of what is happening and what could happen is articulated. Then new shared understanding enables the way forward. The willingness to work together fosters trust and empathy. People start to see what can and must be done to change their system. As a final step, all this transforms their actions and thereby their situation.

An article by Kahane is available here.

Greater Louisville Sierra Club presents
Waterfront Botanical Gardens with Brian Voelker
Clifton Center 2117 Payne Street

Please join us Tuesday, March 17 to learn more about Waterfront Botanical Gardens. We'll hear from Brian Voelker, board president of Botanica and the Waterfront Botanical Gardens.  Brian will discuss the master plan for the Waterfront Botanical Gardens project, to be located near the Big Four Bridge at River Road and Frankfort Ave. in Louisville on reclaimed land that was once used as a landfill.

The gardens will be constructed on, roughly, 23 acres.  Botanica has been around for over 20 years, but in the last two years the project has made a lot of important progress. Projected highlights of the project include a Beargrass Creek overlook, water filtration garden, visitor's center, and a children's garden.  Brian will bring us up to date on the project.

Merton, Eckhart and Calling:
The Blessings and Perils of Following Your Bliss in a Culture of Conformity
Bellarmine University, Frasier Hall

Cultivating Connections invites you to join us for this inspiring event exploring the benefits and risks of following your personal sense of calling over societal expectations. In addition to offering insights and stories from Thomas Merton and Meister Eckhart, author and theologian Matthew Fox will be dialoguing with a panel of local community members who have made a commitment to "following their bliss."

Matthew Fox is the internationally recognized, award-winning author of thirty books including his most recent Meister Eckhart: A Mystic Warrior for our Times, Original Blessing, The Reinvention of Work, A Spirituality Called Compassion and The Coming of the Cosmic Christ. He is an instrumental teacher and scholar in the revival of Western mysticism, particularly the work of Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, and Thomas Aquinas.

Matthew served as a catholic priest until 1993 when his progressive theological perspective resulted in his expulsion from the church by then Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict).  He presently serves as an Episcopal priest and resides in the Oakland California area.

"By connecting Eckhart's wisdom to the problems of today, Fox creates a sense of optimistic urgency; solutions do not wait in the future or lie in the past, but are present right now if people choose to act with compassion and conviction. The book is not only an excellent introduction to Eckhart's theology, but also an inspirational guidepost for connecting faith with activism."

                    - Publishers Weekly on Matthew's latest book:
Meister Eckhart: A Mystic Warrior for our Times

Friday tickets are available on a sliding scale: ($15  $25  $50)

Saturday, March 28 from 1 - 5 pm
Becoming a Mystic Warrior for Our Times
a workshop with Matthew Fox, Mark Steiner, kRi and Hettie
Unity of Louisville

In his latest book, Meister Eckhart: A Mystic Warrior for our Times, Matthew Fox explores the idea that in order to respond to the needs of this moment in history we must become "Mystic Warriors."  Such a transformation will require us to go deep - "deep where the joy resides; where the darkness, pain and grief cry to us; where creativity is unearthed; where the passion for justice and compassion return again."

In addition to examining perspectives and tools for developing the depths of our personal compassion, this workshop will also explore the possibilities for justice-making that exist for the broader community in committing to "going deep."

Our exploration will be experienced through the powerful lens of the four paths of the Creation Spirituality tradition as articulated by our workshop's guide, theologian Matthew Fox.

The program will include a series of presentations from Matthew, corresponding processing opportunities facilitated by Cultivating Connections' Mark Steiner, topped off with the music and insight of the wonderful kRi and Hettie.

Fee is set on a sliding scale $40    $60    $95
Registration Open Now at BrownPaperTickets

Some work-study exchange and scholarship opportunities are available.
