Louisville Sustainability Forum
Wednesday, June 4th, 12 - 1:45 pm
Passionist Earth and Spirit Center
(located behind St Agnes Church at 1920 Newburg Road)

Featured Presentation
Wayne Long, Agricultural Extension Agent for Jefferson County

For over one hundred years, the Cooperative Extension Service has worked to improve the lives of individuals through a variety of educational and outreach programs. They work to create a sustainable, vibrant, healthy community through work in four areas - agriculture, horticulture, family & consumer sciences, and 4-H/Youth Development.  The Extension Service remains the connecting bridge for the individuals, families and communities to the land grant universities in Kentucky and the nation.

Their offerings include: safe soils demonstrations that teach the importance of soil testing and creating a healthy environment through proper use of chemicals and fertilizers; MoneyWise presentations that encourage the use of budgets and creation of savings; 4-H Teen Club that encourages leadership development in youth; assisting in the development of a sustainable farm-to-table program that strengthens the ties between grocery store chains and local producers; and the community garden program that encourages citizens to grow their own food.

Planetary Potluck for Postponed Pipelines
A Keystone XL Pledge of Resistance Celebration
Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church, 4936 Brownsboro Rd

In April the State Department delayed its "National Interest Determination" for the Keystone XL pipeline.  On the heels of that decision, the developers of the Bluegrass Pipeline put that project on hold indefinitely.  If these two delays make you happy, then you are invited to join Louisville's NOKXL Pledge of Resistance team to celebrate.

Over the past year, 65 people have trained to take non-violent direct action in Louisville should the Keystone XL pipeline be approved...and that many more are still interested in taking the training.  If you are concerned about human damage to planet Earth, then come join members of our emerging community of committed Earth-lovers as we celebrate keeping the carbon in the ground a little longer!

If you plan to attend, please RSVP bdrewf@yahoo.com

Social Change Book Club exploring
The Moral Imagination:
The Art and Soul of Building Peace by John Paul Lederach
Heine Bros. Coffee, 119 Chenoweth Lane, St Matthews

Lederach describes the "moral imagination" as the capacity to recognize turning points and possibilities in order to venture down unknown paths and create what does not yet exist.

In reference to peace-building, the moral imagination is the capacity to imagine and generate constructive processes rooted in the day-to-day challenges of violence and yet transcend these destructive patterns. In Lederach's view, the moments of possibility that pave the way for constructive change processes do not emerge through the rote application of a set of techniques or strategies, but rather arise out of something that approximates an artistic process.

Lederach maintains that the art and soul of social change should inform peace-building efforts. Lederach's methodology and writing style throughout this book reflect his emphasis on art and imagination. His inquiry is not linear or strictly analytical, and he repeatedly appeals to imagery, metaphors, and stories to spark our imagination. Themes investigated include the nature of relationships, webs, social change, violence, creativity, serendipity, and complexity, among others.

The Social Change Book Club is open to everyone who is interested in understanding, participating, leading, or supporting social change. Please just show up if you are interested--no RSVP, commitment, etc. It is great when people have read the book, but that is not a requirement to come and discuss.
