Working for Healthy Waterways and Healthy Communities
Don Dott, Director, Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission

The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission (KSNPC) participates in an international network of programs that monitor biodiversity. The 1976 Kentucky legislature created the commission to protect the best remaining natural areas in the state, not only to preserve our natural heritage, but also in recognition of the dependence of our well-being on healthy ecosystems.

The mission of KSNPC is to protect the biodiversity of the Commonwealth.  KSNPC "inventories" the state for the rarest species and natural communities, and seek to protect the highest quality sites in state nature preserves.  KSNPC has established 61 preserves across the state; 3 are locaterd in Jefferson County.  KSNPC also works to protect biodiversity by informing Kentuckians of its great value and importance to our well being.

Bring poetry, art to describe or show, scripture, readings, prayer, silence, humor, or whatever else you'd like to offer along the theme.

Saturday, January 11th 7 pm - 9 pm
a screening of the acclaimed
Things We Don't Talk About:
Women's Stories from the Red Tent

First Unitarian Church, 809 South Fourth St

"
Things We Don't Talk About: Women's Stories from the Red Tent is a groundbreaking 72-minute documentary by award-winning filmmaker Dr. Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost
that shows how the Red Tent, a red fabric space, is empowering women. The film
documents the things women hide, the things that bring them pain and joy, and for many
it is a place to be honest for the first time in their lives.
Things We Don't Talk About seeks to humanize the stories in
the red tent-to put a face on the space.

The Red Tent movement is a vital shift in our cultural consciousness. With its ability to address social problems, reflect values, knowledge, and the basic feelings of women, the Red Tent fulfills a constellation of societal needs: To create a place that honors and celebrates women; enable open conversations about the things that women don't want to talk about in other venues; promote positive ideals for womanhood; educate women about their bodies; educate women about natural menstrual remedies; create an open dialogue about sex; share birthing information; discuss issues of body image and self-acceptance; provide a place where women's voices can be heard; to provide a spiritual place for women where they can laugh, cry, sing, dance, and be.

This is a FREE event, hosted by
Wild Wisdom Keepers and First Unitarian Church, Louisville.

For more information about the film, visit the website: www.redtentmovie.com

All-In Nation:
An America that Works for All
Heine Bros. Coffee, 119 Chenoweth Lane, St Matthews

Our January book is All-In Nation: An America That Works for All, a collaboration between the Center for American Progress and PolicyLink. It describes how strong communities of color are critical to America's economic future and lays out a comprehensive policy agenda to build an equitable economy where everyone, including fast-growing communities of color, can participate and thrive. This book is available only as a free download from allinnation.org.

The Social Change Book Club is open to everyone who is interested in understanding, participating, leading, or supporting social change. Please just show up if you are interested--no RSVP, commitment, etc. It is great when people have read the book, but that is not a requirement to come and discuss.

Tuesday, January 21st 7:00 pm
Greater Louisville Sierra Club
Screening of Morgan Atkinson's
Wonder: The Lives of Anna & Harlan Hubbard
Clifton Center, 2117 Payne Street

You are invited to a special showing of Wonder: The Lives of Anna & Harlan Hubbard, with producer Morgan Atkinson.

The Hubbards lived life as few people in modern times have and in doing so inspired thousands. "What Henry David Thoreau did for two years the Hubbards did for forty," says Atkinson, a Louisville-based producer, who spent two years researching the Hubbard's unique life. "Except they did it in the 20th century and they did it in Kentucky."

Atkinson enlisted the aid of Kentucky icon Wendell Berry in telling the Hubbard's story. Berry, the nationally renowned writer and naturalist, was friends with the Hubbards and wrote a book on their lives called Harlan Hubbard: Life and Work. This book provides much of the narrative thread for the program.  Mr. Berry also serves as the narrator for the documentary.

Morgan Atkinson has produced more than a dozen documentaries that have appeared statewide on KET. Wonder will be available for purchase, as well as other Morgan Atkinson produced documentaries, with a percentage of sales benefiting the Greater Louisville Sierra Club.  Our program begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Change Your Story, Change your Life
Finding the Mythic in Our Own Unique Stories

A Workshop facilitated by
Mark Steiner and Marilyn Stoner

Clifton Universalist Unitarian Church
(2231 Payne Street just off Frankfort Ave)

If you keep telling the same sad small story,
                 you will keep living the same sad small life.
                                                                            ~ Jean Houston

Finding the Mythic in Our Own Unique Stories explores the power of story and the inspiration which lies waiting to be discovered within our own unique life journey.  It examines ways to harness our fascination with story in order to help us consciously create a healthier, more joyful and connected life.

This workshop examines the connections between the stories we tell and who we are, between the stories we tell and what is possible in our lives and in the larger world.

Story is far older than the art of science and psychology,
      and will always be the elder in the equation no matter how much time passes.

                                                                           ~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes

The universe is made of stories, not atoms.
                                                                           ~ Muriel Rukeyser

Kentucky Jobs with Justice invites You to take the Pledge

Our friends at Kentucky Jobs with Justice is challenging each of us to more fully embody solidarity by making a commitment to show up 5 times (or more) over the coming year for groups and causes outside our norm.  The unique invitation offers the opportunity to stand together and show our support for the wide spectrum of justice seeking efforts across the Metro Louisville community.

"I Pledge to be there at least five times over the next year for someone else's fight in addition to my own."

I'll be there at least five times over the next year...
...standing up for our rights as working people for a decent standard of living;
...supporting the rights of all workers to bargain collectively;
...fighting for secure family-wage jobs in the face of corporate attacks on
working people and our communities;
...organizing the unorganized to take aggressive action to secure a better
economic future for all of us;
...mobilizing those already organized to join the fight for jobs with justice.

Click here to take the pledge
