Supporting Ideas and Projects that Help Build a Locally-based Sacred Economy and/or Rooted in the Creation of a More Beautiful World- One that Works For Everyone
1741: A Collaboratory for Social Innovation, 1741 Frankfort Avenue
Do you have an idea or project to help build a locally-based
sacred economy in greater Louisville or beyond?
Or perhaps an idea rooted in the creation of a more beautiful world,
one that works for everyone?
Do you seek co-creators and co-visionaries for the project?
Do you seek specific resources - materials, information, skills, equipment, space, etc. - to help your project grow into its next phase?
If so, we invite you to present your project in the Idea Incubator convened by Cultivating Connections, at 1741: A Collaboratory for Social Innovation (a.k.a. James Lees Presbyterian Church), 1741 Frankfort Ave. 40206, on Saturday November 9, 2013 from 2:30-5:00 PM.
How Does an Idea Incubator Work?
To see an Idea Incubator in action, attend the inaugural Idea Incubator on Saturday 10/26, 6:30-8:30 PM at the Bluegrass Bioneers Conference. Click here for details. It will have a similar format to that of the Cultivating Connections Idea Incubator, with its own theme and presenters.
1. Up to 7 presenters make brief presentations. Each presentation lasts 6 min. 40 sec., the time needed to show 20 slides for 20 seconds each. (For examples, see http://www.pklouisville.org/.) Each presentation will describe the project and end with a request for specific resources needed to advance the project's progress.
2. After the presentations, the audience breaks into groups for follow-up on each project. Each presenter will be assigned a break-out space, with a facilitator and note-taker. Audience members can circulate to explore any projects that fit their interests. In the break-out time (30 minutes), participants may: A) ask clarifying questions; B) sign up to volunteer; C) offer, or provide a referral for, the resource requested. Example: A presenter describes a plan to create a tool lending cooperative, and requests a space for the co-op. A break-out session participant refers the presenter to a community center with space available.
3. After a 15-minute break, participants will have another 30 minutes to explore ideas for collaborating with the presenters.
4. The goal: Idea Incubator presenters and other participants will collaborate after the event to further regionally beneficial projects and increase hope in our collective power to build a compassionate and sustainable community.
How Can I Participate in the Idea Incubator?
Anyone wishing to present in the Idea Incubator may apply by completing this online form.
The planning committee seeks presentations:
* on projects that show a compelling vision for living in recognition of the fundamental abundance, compassion and interconnection of the living universe, including all people.
* on projects already in progress or with good prospects of implementation.
* that engage the audience intellectually and emotionally, provide new information, and inspire action.
* from project leaders who seek collaboration and community involvement.Application Details
We will select presenters and reply to all applicants on Monday October 21. This will give presenters 19 days to prepare and rehearse (yes, rehearse!) their 6:40 presentations. We will provide presenters detailed information about the event and answer questions that arise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask for money?
Consider the Idea Incubator a friend-raiser rather than a fund-raiser. Make a resource request that gets people thinking creatively about how they can get involved personally in the project. For example, you might request help developing a business plan or holding a fundraising event.
What kinds of resources can I request, then?
Ask for something that your project needs and that you don't know where to find. For example, if you help people build community through great block parties, you might want people to help you reach out to neighborhood leaders. If you empower youths to create public art, you might want a list of property owners willing to make exterior walls available for murals. You might need help from someone with web development skills, or access to a large kitchen, or an audience of business leaders to whom to make a presentation... Use your creativity!
Do I need to make a slide presentation?
Present your project in any way you feel will convey the information clearly and build enthusiasm in the audience. We find that visuals can help communicate and make a strong impression. They could take the form of slides, video, costumes, or props. A 20-slide presentation has the advantage of helping to keep the presenter on time. Do not use anything that would take more than a few seconds to set up - no elaborate set pieces or multi-panel displays. Any visual must be clearly understandable from the back of the auditorium. Your presentation time is strictly limited to 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
Can I make a presentation even though I am not a practiced public speaker?
If you can convey your passion for the project along with the information the audience needs, all in the allotted time, we hope to hear from you! We will offer an optional dress rehearsal, with friendly feedback, about a week before the Idea Incubator. We want the presenters as well as the audience members to enjoy their Idea Incubator experience.
