A mother feels the tension

in her struggle with her grown son who still lives at home. Another mother has difficulty feeling connected to her children. A young couple cannot conceive a child. We often believe in order to move on in life we must put behind us what lies in the way. As this is true, it is also true that, in most cases, our ancestors have paid a price in order to survive. In leaving behind pain and grief, perhaps connected with the loss of a loved one, they left a part of themselves behind. The unknown fate of early generations is carried on into the next generations in order to seek resolution.

We confuse to "put behind us" with "wanting to forget". The family field does not forget. It wants wholeness and completion. We must look deeply into what we would prefer to leave behind.
