I love Natalie Goldberg. As a writing teacher she is actually teaching the painting process. When people ask me about Painting from the Inside Out, it is difficult to convey in words a process that is so visceral and expressive and that comes straight from the gut. N. Goldberg does this. She is able to tap into that place where words and images pop up directly, spontaneously, without censorship.

"Play around. Dive into absurdity and write. Take chances. You will succeed if you are fearless of failure." she says. This is what she encourages - over and over.

Whether writing, painting, singing, making music or any other play form, when it is expressed directly from our guts, we surprise ourselves. This is the place of freedom.

Why paint something when you already know how it looks? That is just your mind trying to match an idea in your head with what you put on the paper. Don't work so hard! Jump into the river of life and risk painting what you don't yet know - and surprise yourself!
