Dear Friend,  

I just returned from Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA., where I taught Michele Cassou's Point Zero Painting with her.

What is Point Zero?
 
It is the place beneath our conditioned and habitual response. It is the place of innocence and spontaneity, where our freedom lies. Creativity is born here in this space of our true nature.  It is the source out of which we can express and experience joy.

I love teaching these workshops. Meeting fellow painters in this process reminds me, over and over again, what is really important: to be our natural and authentic selves.  A new painter said she didn't have anything to paint. After some questioning, it became clear that she did not dare paint an image.

When we judge ourselves for how our painting looks, or want to control how something should look, or want to find meaning in something we have painted, we meet our habitual responses that block the flow of creativity.  We call these creative blocks, because within them resides the potential for creativity. They are opportunities for us to open to a greater inner space with new insight.
