Lifelong Learners

Back to school - one of the blessings I have enjoyed through the years is that as District President/Bishop/Pastor I am involved in the opening services and dedicatory activities of Lutheran educational endeavors from pre-school through college.  The real action is in the faces and lives of those young people.  There are the weeping, wailing little ones separated from mom for the first time, scared and feeling all alone, then slowly but surely running toward the door and the teacher and the new best friends as the new routine becomes the place where insight, fresh facts, and brand new experience energize.  The grade-schoolers, back-packed to the max, are pulling in data at rates rapid enough that many of us adults, myself included, purposely don't watch "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" on TV due to the high embarrassment content.  High Schoolers are a blur of activities and attitudes as identity is firmed up and carried through the litany of courses opening up history, biology, math and science to investigation.  And in college, the goal is "commencement," the degree base from which "real life" and careers and lifetime relationships and all the big next steps commence.

What we invariably offer in our Lutheran schools is the lifelong opportunity to learn of Jesus.  We offer that opportunity through song, through study, through worship, through catechesis, through teacher/student relationships, through friendships where Christ is at the center, through love in and for families, through tough times at home and tough times at school, through the very visible vocation of teaching even in the manner of Rabbi Jesus in the determination and commitment of teachers and assistants and staff and administrators, through the celebration of life that is never-ending because of the durable love of a faithful God in the gift of Christ Jesus unto death and eternity.

As difficult as it has become to make the economic case for Lutheran schools in the last decade, as critically important to our very identity is the continuation of those schools.  For our schools reveal ourselves.  We are lifelong learners, all of us.  Once we were three, now we are thirty or forty or sixty-plus.  But we still and always will love to sing the songs that tell the story we know by heart.  It is the story of our true purpose, our true destiny, our truest and best Friend, the Light of our lives whose name is Jesus.

May our pre-schools and grade schools and high schools and colleges, our Sunday Schools and homework help programs and catechetical instructions, all of our Christian education be a mighty blessing in September of 2013!

LWML News

Dear Friends,

I hope the summer months have been kind to everyone. It has been a hot one at that, but thankfully, I hope the heat has passed.

There is one area where we are having a MAJOR cold spell, and that is in our mite giving. With a little over 7 months to go before the close of this biennium, we are less than halfway to our goal.

We all need to put our heads together and come up with a plan.  If each and every congregation in our MITEY Atlantic District made a conscious effort, each and every month, we will, without any doubt, meet and surpass our goal! But, we need YOUR help! No amount is too small. Keep in the back of your mind that LWML has raised over $100 million dollars in mite money since its inception. Just think how many have heard the precious Good News of Jesus Christ because of all of those pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and BILLS!

I know in my heart that we can achieve this goal. National LWML was WAY behind in this last biennium, but, by the grace of God, and the imaginative ways of promoting mite giving in the 40 districts, the goal was achieved and SURPASSED!!!Everyone banded together to make that mite goal a reality. We now need to do the same thing in our Atlantic District. We need EVERYONE to join forces to achieve this common goal. We don't want any of the grant recipients to go away disappointed because we were unable to make good on our promise to them.

Please, keep our mission grant recipients and our mission goal in your prayers.

Our Vice President for Mission Outreach, Rae Ann Spitzenberger has broken down for us what is needed each month in order to meet the goal. It may seem like a very large number, but remember that if we all band together, this can be done!

Thank you for all of your past donations and your anticipated continued support of the LWML.

Deborah Graybosch

President

Lutheran Counseling Center

LCC is still helping victims of Super Storm Sandy with mental health issues related to the storm, including such things as depression, grief from loss of property/job/etc., anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger management, marriage counseling and family counseling. Because of grant and donor funding, this invaluable help is at little to no cost. Please pass this information to anyone who may need our help. We are currently seeing 64 familes from all areas of the metro NY and Long Island areas who have been impacted by

Sandy. Many people believe erroneously that this recovery work is over but for mental health issues, it is in full force and increasing!
