Letter from the President

 Pain and the Paraclete

So you haven't heard much from me for the past three weeks.  Reason?  Two words - kidney stones.  Three of those little rumbling rocks got stuck inside me.  Thanks for the prayers of many - I didn't make any public announcements about this episode; the hope was that "this too shall pass," that they wouldn't stick around for an inordinate amount of time.  Such was not the case.

LWML Update

We have paid our first seven mission grants of the biennium and are a few hundred dollars away from funding our eighth grant, Trinity Community Outreach. We still have a long way to go to meet this biennium's mite goal, so please keep filling up those mite boxes!

Here are the Mission Grants for the 2012-2014 biennium. This month, Mission Grant #7, Women of Christ Too, is highlighted.

1. "Train a child in the way he should go" Prov. 22:6 $2,000.00

2. Helping in the Midst of Disaster$3,000.00

3. Wrap Around Program - "Covered by Grace"$2,400.00

4. Courageous Dads!$600.00

5. Food, Fun & Faith: A Confirmation Adventure$1,300.00

6. Young Women of God on the Move $5,000.00

7. Women of Christ Too$1,800.00

Prison ministries provide spiritual guidance to inmates who may already have a relationship with God, and to reach inmates who do not have a religious foundation. Our request for funding is to initiate a Women's Prison Ministry that will support incarcerated women by supplying personal care items, Bibles and women's daily devotional materials. We will encourage the women at Rikers Island and share with them that Jesus loves them unconditionally (Grace Lutheran Church, Queens Village, NY).

8. Trinity Community Outreach$800.00

9. Operation Barnabas$2,500.00

10. Community Garden Outreach$5,000.00

11. Bilingual VBS at THE LIFE Church$3,000.00

12. Meet Them where They Are$6,500.00

13. Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry $3,600.00

14. Arts in Mission-NY (AIM) www.artsinmissionny.org$3,845.00

15. Food Pantry of Trinity Lutheran Church, Glen Cove, NY$1,500.00

16. Reaching the Unreached with Gospel Message$2,755.00

2012-2014 Total Mission Goal: $76,000

In order for us to meet our mission goal for the 2012-2014 biennium, it is important to send in your mite donations on a regular basis. No amount is too small!

Please submit your mite donations to: June Deebrah

Quenched by the Water

June 27-30, 2013

Pittsburgh, Pa.

In less than one month, the women and men of the LWML will be meeting in Pittsburgh for the 35th Biennial Convention of the Lutheran Woman's Missionary League.....will you be there??? Will you be a part of this wonderful event???? Will you be able to say when this is all said and done "I was a worker at that convention? I was part of this magnificent event! I WAS THERE!!!!"

There's still time for you to be a part of the excitement! Workers are still needed and will be given a $65 discount on their registration. This is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE! Our Atlantic District is one of the six host districts. You may never have an opportunity like this again...so don't wait! Don't miss out on the fun and excitement!

If you are a worker at the convention (and I hope you are!) you must wait until you receive your discount registration coupon to attach to your registration. You may, however, book your hotel at any time. The sooner you book it, the better chance of getting the hotel you desire.

All registration materials can be found in the center of the winter edition of the Lutheran Woman's Quarterly. You may also register online at: www.lwml.org.

All delegates should have received their packets either by email or regular mail.

If you have any questions, you can contact Deborah Graybosch at: deblwml@gmail.com.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!!

Daily Prayer Reduces Stress and Anxiety

By: Rev. Kirk Bingaman, Ph.D., LCC Pastoral Psychotherapist In recent months I have been focusing on the extraordinary findings emerging from the field of neuroscience which are revealing that far from being fixed and unchanging, the human brain has a remarkable capacity for neuroplasticity, for continued change and growth throughout our lives. Moreover, the revolutionary discovery also reveals that the "gift" of neuroplasticity is available to us not only in our youth but across the entire lifespan, even in later adulthood.
