Shelter in the Storm
On October 30, the day after Sandy struck New York and New Jersey with full force, Pastors Derek Lecakes, Mark Mueller and Paul Sauer of our Atlantic District Disaster Response corps were heading back into Queens from Long Island. We had heard through the circuitous routes that often take place during times of trouble of the loss of Atlantic District Pastor Alan Steinke's home in Massapequa, and were awaiting a coordinative dinner and time with our national Disaster Response leaders. Hurricane Sandy Disaster Response
**Please watch for updated e-mails regarding disaster response.**
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Grace, mercy and peace from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
We have been checking on our pastors, members, churches and communities. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. At this point we have heard from most of the Atlantic District Churches. We are blessed, that while our churches have sustained some damage from the wind none seem to be severely damaged including True Light, Manhattan. There are still some we are checking on especially on Staten Island.
Our district pastors have been busy contacting the members of their churches determining what damages may have occurred. We already know of a handful of people directly connected to our churches that have sustained significant damage or total loss of home. Reports continue to surface and that number is rising. We expect over the course of the weekend as more people return to their homes additional needs will come to light.
A shelter in Queens of displaced people from the Rockaways was visited by an assessment team. They talked and prayed with a number of victims from the storm. They also spoke with the leadership of the shelter and determined some needs that can quickly be resolved.
Over the next few days we will be compiling a list of needs.
We, the Atlantic District, are asking to for you receive a special collection for Hurricane Sandy Recovery this Sunday and next and send it in to the district office. The monies collected will go to assist the ongoing and future recovery efforts of our district and surrounding areas due to Hurricane Sandy.
In Christ,
Pastor Derek Lecakes
Atlantic District Disaster Response Coordinator
Vice-President, Region 1, Atlantic District

Mission Grant Update
The Atlantic District LWML is ready to pay our second mission grant of the biennium, Helping in the Midst of Disaster. Hurricane Sandy is a reminder of how relevant and important our grants are in reaching out to people in our communities and around world. We need about $1,000 more to pay our third grant of the biennium, so please keep those mites coming!
Here are the Mission Grants for the 2012-2014 biennium. This month, Mission Grant #4, Courageous Dads!, is highlighted.
1. "Train a child in the way he should go" Prov. 22:6 $2,000.00

This four-week study for dads will help them to discover how to lead their families in areas of responsibility, faith and legacy. The funds will be used to purchase materials to facilitate a four-week Bible study with the fathers of the students currently attending Great Commission Christian School (St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, New York).
5. Food, Fun & Faith: A Confirmation Adventure $1,300.00
6. Young Women of God on the Move $5,000.00
7. Women of Christ Too $1,800.00
8. Trinity Community Outreach $800.00
9. Operation Barnabas $2,500.00

Mission House Opens at Immanuel Whitestone
| |
Koinonia Mission House at Evangelical Immanuel Lutheran Church, Whitestone, provides worry-free, comfortable, safe and convenient housing for ministry, mission or church agency-related groups, families or individuals, who need a place to stay in New York City, while they go about the Lord's business; sharing the Good News of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Koinonia House is fully furnished. The house is open year round and is air-conditioned in the summer and fully heated in the winter. There is no set cost-it is free of charge-and can accommodate from 14 to 40 (utilizing the adjacent Fellowship Hall for large groups). Free will offerings have been made by some guests. These gifts have been re-invested in the Mission House projects, while tithing toward our church Mission Board for outreach. In this way the House serves a dual mission purpose.
All that is asked of those interested in spending time at Koinonia House is a letter from a Pastor or, if no pastor is available, a lay leader. Interested parties should contact the Immanuel office at 718-767-5656 and can visit www.immanuelwhitestone.com for a link to Koinonia Mission House. A website is currently under construction that will include additional information about using the facility including what to bring, what is allowed and what there is to do in the area. It will also allow online booking arrangements.

Lutheran Malaria Initiative
Lutheran Malaria Initiative program staff, Hilaire Zon from West Africa shared that the most recent LMI program in Mali had some surprising results. Since 2006 the percentage of children under 5 years old sleeping under a bed net has increased from 27% to 99%. Households owning at least one bed net jumped from 66% to 99% and pregnant women sleeping under a bed net the previous night went from 31% to 86%. All of these changes are directly related to the programming of LMI and its partners.
Please consider Holiday gifts to the LMI campaign through your church, through LIMM, or directly to www.lutheranmalaria.org. All of us together CAN help to change history and eradicate deaths in Africa from malaria by 2015.
