Seven Habits of Highly Successful Yogis

Being a truly successful yogi doesn't entail owning a string of yoga centers or being able to levitate. Being a successful yogi means that our inner and outer lives support each other and that we are rocking our gifts. In the truest sense it means that we are making headway with the great projects of a life of the Spirit: clearing karmic backlog, bringing our minds under our conscious control, turning the pain of the past into infinite gain, purifying the ego, helping to ease suffering, and inspiring others. A real life yogi never gets complacent. Time, space, illusion, and desire are crafty antagonists and it's their job to keep yogis on their toes. A successful yogi has no recourse but to stay sharp everyday.

1. Make your practice a priority.
Talk doesn't cook the rice, doing does.  The wise person knows that our body needs to be balanced and purified, our minds focused and our subconscious cleared everyday. A powerful practice gives us tools that support us even when we lapse. A successful yogi knows that there is absolutely no substitute for getting our reps in. And not just going through the motions, going through the devotions!

2. Know that the impossible is possible.
Once Yogi Bhajan taught a morning practice, part of which entailed sitting on the left heel with the right foot flat and chanting a mantra for 22 min. Our response was, "He's got to be kidding!" But after doing it for a while it became definitely doable. If you are systematic, you can make the impossible just another day at the office. It's all about being systematic and steady over the long haul. What was impossible was that against all odds, and in spite of all of life's distractions, you chose to begin your journey on a Path with Heart. We all started off hitchhiking and Kundalini Yoga picked us up. And miracles of miracles, it's going exactly where we need to go!

3. Set yourself up for longevity in a pose.
The start of an exercise is the most important thing. If we don't create a solid base then we have to compensate throughout the exercise. Excuse the cliche, but it really is like building a house in tornado city. You are going to be extra careful to set a strong foundation. Want to be able to keep up in those 11 minute Kundalini arm exercises? Make sure that you are using the large muscles of your back and not your shoulders. Successful Kundalini Bridge Pose? Really press down to rise up and you will find a new release in the pose. Also, set yourself up internally before you begin an exercise or Meditation. It's your life. It's your redemption. It's for all the marbles

4. Set up your life to honor your practice.
Ghandi said, "I have so much to do today. I think I'll meditate an hour more!" One of the amazing results of a committed practice is the ability to do less and get more done. You will find that adding time for a yoga and meditation practice will actually stretch time so you can have a type A day in a relaxed way. Our practice is our base of support. The friend of our life. Our life guard. Our body guard. Our safe guard. The palace guard of our soul. Our guardian angel. There are not many sure things in this life, but one thing we can count on is that when we power our practice, it empowers us.

5. Keep an overview.
If you're feeling that you're not walking the walk but trudging the trudge, you're not alone. It's hard to feel like a Spiritual rock star when you're taking out the trash, but it's really important to remember that those of us who aspire to remember Infinity in the finite are on a far larger stage than we know. Some- times it feels like nothing is happening in your practice. Day 29 of your 40 day practice and you start to doubt. You wonder why you feel so crabby and out of sorts when you have been meditating almost 30 days in a row! What's that about? Here is where an overview is key. You are clearing out years (maybe lifetimes) of subconscious sludge. Keeping an overview helps us to be non-reactive in relation to other people and our own minds. This is the highest yogic attainment.

6. Successful yogis share their practice.
As Yogi Bhajan always said, "If you want to master something teach it." Teaching yoga is an amazing way to gain a true understanding of the practice. It also makes us accountable to our practice (and life!) because people are depending on us (which is also a real heart opener). When we teach all of our chakras ignite so we can be the light! We have to be grounded, creative, fearless, loving, truthful, focused, expansive and bright. Sharing our practice is a way of honoring the Universe and paying forward for the gift of this amazing technology. Think of the way kids light up when they open their presents on Christmas morning. People's souls light up in the same way when you help them spark Spirit and reminisce with them about their True Ancestral Home.

7. Personalize your practice.
Only you know your innermost goals and need for healing. On the yoga path it is all about the journey but that journey entails specific accomplishments which can only be scripted by each of us. Trust your own judgement and your own experience. It is also important to find role models who seem to exemplify what you wish to become. Just as artists and writers often copy great masters until they find their own rhythm and voice, emulating those who inspire you will lead you to honoring your own soul. Our souls resonate with those who reflect the greatness we are meant to express. Kundalini Yoga contains 1000 kriyas and 1000 Meditations, as well as many subsets, combinations, and special applications of these. You will find yourself falling in love with various techniques at certain junctures in your journey. Rock those techniques! Yogi Bhajan coined the phrase "Creative Meditation," to describe the personal spin we put on our practice. This can make our practice super powerful.

Kevin's Story

Here is a very exciting healing breakthrough story. We want to commend  Kevin for his courageous decision to be proactive with his recovery and make the impossible possible holistically. We are not doctors so we can't advise people to turn their backs on standard medical treatments, but we can say that people are collectively awakening to the fact that there are a positive range of options and that it is possible to be co-creators of our own reality. Also, that the amazing methods that have worked for centuries have never been more relevant!

My name is Kevin D., I am a 56 year old carpenter, who was diagnosed with Stage II Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma on February 28th, 2013. The diagnosis was a result of the biopsy of a 3cm tumor that was discovered at the beginning of February and removed when I underwent a major surgical procedure involving the pancreas, duodenum and other organs, a Pancreaticoduodenectomy, also known as Whipple procedure. The surgical oncologist advised me the best protocol for care was radiation and chemotherapy, a second opinion prescribed the same. I was advised by both Oncologist that pancreatic cancer has a greater chance of reoccurrence.
I left the hospital ten days following surgery 45 lbs lighter, with minimal muscle. My research of how and/or why I had the tumor pointed me to a Case Study of side effects from the blood pressure medications I had been taking for more than 14 years. The thought of putting more chemicals and medications in to my body was not a viable option.

After much thought, research and reaching out to friends and family, I opted to follow a Holistic approach as my main course of treatment. I continued Chiropractic care, as well as Acupuncture. I changed my diet, I started walking, and most importantly, I started a daily regimen of Ravi & Ana's Kundalini Yoga. My upper cervical Chiropractors, Drs. Joseph & Carolyn Clauss, have been practicing Kundalini Yoga for many years, and advising their patients to do the same. The beginning of my Kundalini Yoga experience was difficult, due to my recent surgery, and weak condition. But, as time progressed, I was able to reduce the modifications to the exercises and feel the full benefits. I experienced an increase in my energy level, and a feeling of balance and wellness. I even noticed my previously annual bouts with sinus infections (I had chronic sinusitis since childhood), were a thing of the past.

I continue to monitor my blood work every three months, with the same results, no indication that the Cancer has returned. My Holisitic course of treatment is a credit to all of the talented and wonderful individuals who have guided me to a better way of survival. I credit Ravi & Ana's Kundalini Yoga with helping my body heal; giving me the strength to return to work, and enjoy all that life has to offer. Thank you Ravi & Ana!

Parasite Cleanse

Hi, I read about a liver cleanse on the health archive on your website, but  nothing about a parasite cleanse. Can you advise? Thanks a lot!

For a very effective parasite cleanse we suggest food grade diatomacious earth. We also recommend our practice our Yoga Cleanse DVD for 40 consecutive days as well as the immune bootster segment on our Yoga House Call DVD. Please keep us posted!

Broken Heart

Hi Ana and Ravi, Happy Easter! I have a "testimony" and question for you - I went to see my Ayurvedic doctor and as he was checking all my systems he commented how my liver/gallbladder seems to be doing really well. I've been doing yoga cleanse regularly and I think that is why! One thing that he noticed was "off" is my heart. Not that anything bad is going on, but it could use some TLC - the grief I've been feeling over the loss of my mom seems like it is manifesting physically.  So today I did your green energy DVD, and the heart meditation on page 17 of our manual.  Are there any other DVDs or meditations you would recommend? Looking forward to the workshop in a couple weeks!

Thanks for writing. Great to hear that your liver is thriving! In addition to our Green Energy we suggest regular practice of the SaTaNaMa Meditation. That one is for emotional healing and gives the deep solace of remembering that "All things come from God and all things go to God," not as an intellectual understanding but as an ongoing experience of Self. The grief you are experiencing will always be there but your capacity for joy will make a comeback. We wish you joy, health, and abundant blessings!

Passing of a Dear Pet

Hi Ana, First off, I want to thank you so much for your kindness and sincerety to take time out of your busy day to help people like me and others with such a busy schedulle.  I wrote to you last month about losing my 19 year old beloved cat  and I was very worrried where he went (such as Heaven) and you took  the time to soothe my soul and sad when cats are very connected to spirtual humans they shoot to the heavans ....and gave me meditations to do.....which I've bee doing so I'm sure he had to make it there ...he was loved way beyond words can describe  anyway.....we are thinking about getting a new one now and went and looked at a baby  kitty tonight that looks like him.....I  jut pray the new  cat has the loving personality that he did.

I'll quit rambling now.....and let you know why I'm writingl  I was wondering if there is some sort of spirutal name ho dan thing of for or new kitty since you know the situation.....I think that would be sort of Cool!  Thanks.................and I hope you can underastand thisk I haven't been doing too well. thanks again, Sat Nam

We are very sorry to hear about your cat. Do you know the Akal prayer for when someone passes? As the sun is setting or rising, go to a high place like a mountain top and think of them as you chant: Akaaaaal. Do this three times. it means Deathless and will help convey their soul to a beautiful place or higher level of being. We also suggest the Sa-Ta-Na-Ma Meditaiton which is for emotional healing and to invoke the deep understanding that "All things come from God and all things to to God."

We're sure that your loving association your cat will catapult it into beautiful realms. According to yogic teachings, some animals, through association with spiritually-minded humans go right from animal to angel. We're sure that that will be the case here!

Meditation for Creativity and Consciousness

Sit in  Easy Pose, with a light Neck Lock. Keep your spine straight and your chest slightly lifted. With your elbows at the base of your ribs, raise your hands to sternum level. The palms face each other. Have the base of your palms meeting as well as the little fingers and thumbs along their lengths. The other fingers are spread wide. Your eyes are 1/10th open looking down and in towards the tip of your nose. Imagine that your hands are filled with cool fire. At the same time pulse the sounds Sa-Ta-Na-Ma on an upward angle out the brow. Imagine that the syllables are glowing 3D letters, made of the same cool fire that is filling your hands. 11-31 min.

To End: Inhale deeply, stretch your arms up over the head, and open and close your fists several times. Relax the breath and arms and meditate for one minute before resuming normal activity.

Comments: Many thousands of years ago the ancient yogis, technicians of the sacred, made an amazing discovery: we are the Universe. Our bodies and minds have a direct link to All That Is and we can draw upon this Totality to be co-creators of our inner and outer reality. As an artist of the Infinite, this Meditation helps us broaden our palette and make our ideas real. Sa-Ta-Na-Ma represents the cycle of Creation: Existence, Life, Transformation, Rebirth. Everything is contained in these sacred syllables. Sa-Ta-Na-Ma is a great mantra for emotional healing because it gives us the solace that, "All things come from God and all things go to God."

This Meditation was called Mahar Mudra in India. A loose translation would be  that "even a caveman," could attain amazing benefits from this powerful practice!
