Sat Nam Dear Yogis.
May the cupid of conscious- ness send many arrows of flaming love your way. See below for arrows in the form of an inspiring book list. It's our hall of fame master tomes to blow your mind and put wind in your soul sails on your journey to the greater you!
But first, we hope this finds you in the beautiful flow and glow of Spirit! Valentines Day is coming and what better pretext than to open your heart to the impossible made possible through courage, compassion, and love. Do these cold, icy days have you a bit depressed? What better time to be impressed by the greatest indoor activity aligned with Infinity: your Kundalini Yoga practice. How about a Kundalini Yoga Flow Bootcamp Bonanza!
News of the Universe: Venus goes direct, just in time for Valentine's Day. Have things become touchy (but not feely) with your significant other? Or, has their been strife in your business life? Things are about to become more relaxed. Bodies and souls will blend. Clarity will come. Decisions will be more easily arrived at. Hearts will open.
On February 6th Mercury (oh no, not again!) goes retrograde. Usually Mercury in retrograde means lack of concentration and synchronization, travel delays, miscommunication and misunderstandings. Not this time though. Why? Because everything contains its opposite and you're going to use this energy to organize for beautiful breakthroughs. Now is the time to amp up your Meditation practice so that new revelations can be revealed to you. This is a fine time for trying on a new world view and creating an infrastructure for new possibilities in your life. How about completing the outline for the book you've been wanting to write, or going over old journals to cull golden nuggets for future master works? The cardinal cross formed by Uranus (located in Aries), Jupiter (in Cancer), Mars (in Libra), Venus and Pluto (in Capricorn) will continue to test us and hopefully bring out the best in us. How you respond will be a template for the rest of your year. Stay on purpose. Express the highest integrity. Organize your self around Self.
Astrology is a complicated and multidimensional science. But you don't need computational back up to stay on top of your trends. A daily Kundalini Yoga / Meditation practice will help you stay in the rhythm and flow of the Universe and to surf the planetary ethers/energies with the best of them. Astrology is nothing more than karma waiting to happen. Does that means that life as we know it is nothing more than a sword of Damocles affair? No, because Dharma is always an option. That means aligning ourselves with Spirit and living with conscious integrity. Dharma is its own reward but it also bestows many blessings.

We are still plugging away on our book! It's close and we are so excited for you to read it! We hope it will be the ultimate Kundalini Yoga companion. It will contain the most accurate history of Kundalini Yoga to date, travel tips on the yoga path, fun and inspirational how-to's, deep Wisdom, beautiful photos and art, Kundalini lifestyle info, and of course, lots and lots, and we mean LOTS of powerful Kundalini Yoga sets for you to mix and match. Meanwhile, we are excited to share some of our favorite books that have inspired us along the way. Have you noticed that once you pick up a book that inspires you, you can't go back to novels, etc. that don't ascend or transcend in some way? It's because, once Spirit touches us, our souls get hungry for more. Of course, the most powerful book is the Universe itself. In light of your inner light, these books will validate what your practice reveals to you. Our practice is a day to day affair. We can spiral up or down in life based on many influences. All it takes is one thought or novel perspective to provide upward mobility. These books will fill you with wonder and awe and remind you that you're not alone on the Path. The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan - Yogi Bhajan
This book encapsulates Yogi Bhajan's core teachings in easy to read and easy to remember sound bytes. Books like this are meant to be companions for life. Yogi Bhajan said that if you read this out loud it's a great form of self-therapy.
The Mind: Its Projections and Multiple Facets - Gurucharan Singh Khalsa
It really is all in our minds. Therein lies the seesaw between mastery and madness. Gurucharan does an amazing job of helping us understand this super-computer so that it can be used for its purpose intended: understanding the depth and dimension of life and existence and showing us the path to happiness. This should be required reading for everyone who has a mind of their own. The Body Reveals - by Ron Kurtz and Hector Prestera
Our bodies are novels which reveal our emotional history. This book instructs us in the language of that novel and highlights the great themes. The search for love and the saga of making peace with our body vehicle is the perfect plot for a great adventure. If someone leads with their head what is that clue pointing to? What does it mean to have a sway back hunched shoulders, or splayed feet? Learn how to read anyone like a book! Tales of the Hasidim: Early & Later Masters - Martin BuberMartin Buber eloquently describes the lives of great Masters in the lineage of the Bal Shem Tov (Master of the Good Name) who was the Eastern European version of Guru Nanak. In a very dark time these great Saints were beacons of Spirit and Wisdom and gave hope to people who needed it the most. These European gurus were so tuned in the Universe came to them for advice! You will find this entertaining and inspiring and you will discover that gurus are not just from India.
Lives & Legends of the Mahasiddhas - Keith Dowman
The Mahasiddhas were great Tantric Masters who transformed the lowest to the highest. They were butchers, and drunkards without a 12 step program, yet they found illumination by having the ability to deconstruct reality and see the light behind everything. Read their stories and be sure not to miss the one about Lui the fish guts eater. Or the sleeping yogi who told his Teacher he would only meditate if he could do it lying down. How to Know God - Christopher Isherwood, Patanjali
"The soul does not love, it is love itself. It does not exist, it is existence itself. It does not know, it is knowledge itself." --How to Know God' Page 130
News of the Universe - Poem of Twofold Consciousness - edited Robert Bly
The very best poetry describes the indescribable. Prepare to be inspired by the amazing word music of these spontaneous exclamations of praise! What's great about these poets, from many Spiritual traditions, is that their lives were their words in action. The Eagles Gift and Tales of Power - Carlos Castaneda Any book by Carols Castaneda can find a place among the most inspired, poignant, and dramatic books about the Spiritual quest which have been written in the last 50 years. Some people say that his books are allegorical. Some insist that they are verbatim recollections of a special apprenticeship. It doesn't matter. What matters is that these amazing stories and special knowledge somehow came to be for the delightful edification of us all.
Tantra Unveiled - Pandit Rajmani Tigunait
Tantra is a concept which can't be explained only experienced. This book comes as close to explaining this concept (in a very down to earth way) as you can get. Kundalini Yoga is a tantric path. It's all about what works!Read this and then pop in a favorite Kundalini Yoga DVD and experience tantra in action!
Guru for the Aquarian Age - Parmatma Singh Khalsa
This book features stories from the life of Guru Nanak who was a breath of fresh air in 15th century India. His inspired Teachings cut through Spiritual materialism the way a dolphin's dorsal cuts through water. This is a must read for all students of Kundalini Yoga. Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery - Eric FranklinGain an understanding of your moving alignment. Learn visual cues that you can immediately get up (or get down on the floor) to try out and sense a new understanding of your bones, alignment, and anatomy as well as a new level of comfort in your own skin. This is a must read for everyone who lives in a body. People in bodies of light will like it too!
The Book of Five Rings - Miyamoto Musashi
True story: Musashi was a Japanese swordsman and rōnin (lone Samurai). The Green Hornet of his time. He was also a zen Buddhist and he never lost a fight. His writings reconcile both paths and represent a living philosophy of the joy of discipline and the beauty of transcendence. This book is one of the greatest expressions of the human spirit as well as Spirit expressing itself through humans.
The 100 Thousand Songs of Milarepa - translated by Garma C. C. Chang
Milarepa was an amazing yogi in the Tibetan tradition who told his own story in beautiful song poems. His life is an unbelievable earthly drama which serves as a road map for each of us. He started his path as a black tantric (sorcerer) seeking revenge on his uncle after he made him, his mother, and sister, work their land like slaves. His magic worked better than he expected and after his uncle's death, out of remorse, he sought out a Spiritual Teacher and ultimately became a great master in that Teachers lineage. This will inspire you to rock your practice!
Siddhartha - Herman Hesse
Short but packs a powerful punch. You won't want this story to end. We put it down on the second chapter and read an entire other book before going back to it just so we could savor it a bit longer. Siddartha travels in search of enlightenment, experiencing the inner dreams, and outer trials that provoke and challenge us all in life. Find peace along with Siddartha who eventually finds the source of beauty in Self.
Asana Pranayama Mudra Bhanda - Saraswati, Satyananda Swami
If you want to find an historic precendent for the Kundalini Yoga we've come to know and love, look no further than the Bihar school of yoga. They do sequences of exercises called kriyas, Breath of Fire, and much more that you'll recognize. This book demonstrates that Kundalini Yoga doesn't exist in a vacuum but is part of the greater continuum of all yoga.
A wonderful story of the love, friendship, and shared spiritual journey of a poet and a modern day monk. Much of this memoir takes place in Woodstock, NY where we lived for a few years. This book beautifully depicts what it means to be a Spiritual Teacher and what it means to be a Spiritual student. Praana Praanee Praanayam - Hari Jot Kaur
This really well done book explores the breath technology of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. You can study yoga postures and yoga theory for years but the real secret for genuine transformation is the breath. Breath can elevate, calm, strengthen and soothe. Breath can keep you energized, bouyant and young. It can even help you discover your true alignment and true self. Nowhere is breath more exciting and life changing than in the techniques of Kundalini Yoga. This is the book you will want to have in your library forever. Memories, Dreams, and Reflections - Carl Jung
Remember when taking a math test you had to "show your work," so the teacher could see how you arrived at your answers? In this great book Carl Jung, the genius of archetypes and the process of inner unfolding reveals how his life story fueled his revelations. He dictated/wrote this when he was 81 and we get the benefit of a lifetime of wisdom.

Advice to a Reticent Warrior Hi Ana and Ravi, Thank you so much for all that you do, and for all of the ways in which you have helped me! I have a question about your Warrior DVD -- I feel so drawn to this DVD! I think that it is because I want to become a stronger person, in both mind, body and spirit! The problem is, I am just not strong enough to even get through the warm-ups (I am 45). Should I just do as much as I can do of Warrior and then go right to the Deep Relaxation and Meditation (and then work up to finishing the Warm-Up and eventually even do a set) or should I find another DVD that is not as hard for me, but can get through the whole thing? If and when the day comes that I could possible get through all of Warrior (if you suggest that I stick with Warrior) then I know I will have accomplished something great, I just don't know that I am doing my body/mind/spirit any good by not being able to do more than a couple of the exercises! Thank you so much for anything that you could suggest! Blessings, Love, Light and Warmth,
Thanks for writing and congratulations on your goal of becoming a Yogi Warrior! We recommend doing what you can of Warrior Workout and then doing the relaxation and meditation. Try extending yourself a little more each time and setting a firm intention that within a year, you will be able to do this whole DVD. We also recommend doing our Kundalini Yoga for Beginners & Beyond every other day as part of your training for the completion of Warrior Workout. It's an excellent workout for building endurance. Also, please remember that 45 is the new 25, so no excuses in that department. Many people feel that they are over the hill when they haven't even started climbing yet. At 45 we are, or could still be in our prime. Pushing yourself a bit more in your workouts now will help keep your hormones happy. You can easily get stronger than you have ever been in your life! Our Warrior Workout DVD is for circulation and elimination of toxins. It helps to reduce so called "problem areas." Most importantly it will put you in touch with your Warrior archetype to help you be victorious in all your endeavors. Freaked Out
I have a quick question. I got your fat free yoga dvd and I really liked it. Towards the end of start your engines the lights in my room started to flicker and turned on and off. The television turned off also. I've lived in my apartment for 8 years and this has never happened. This only happened in the room I was practicing in. Even my husband was wondering what happened with the lights. I turned the lights and television back on and started to practice again and it did the same thing. I then stopped during the dvd and waited and nothing. The lights didn't flicker or turn off and the television stayed on when I stopped. I usually practice power yoga without any kind of meditation to it. I don't think I had some kind of Kundalini Awakening because today was the first day I started!!! and I don't really know that much about Kundalini yoga. I just thought it would be a great way to relieve stress and relax. Has anyone ever experienced this? Is this normal or am I just making too much of a big deal out of nothing? Perhaps we were just having some sort of electrical problems in my apartment and its just a coincidence. I'm pretty freaked out about it.
Thanks for writing. Please accept our assurance that there is absolutely no connection between our Fat Free Yoga DVD and electrical problems. Our Fat Free Yoga, first in video, and then in DVD has been around since 2004 and we have sold 100,000+ copies, and have never heard of anyone reporting anything out of the ordinary. Some people have theorized that there could be a connection between stress / emotional duress and a locked diaphragm area (which is the hub of the nervous system), and anomalies in one's immediate environment. If there is any credence to that theory then Fat Free Yoga (and all of our DVD's) would be exactly the thing to do because it resolves stress and buried emotions in a very graceful way. Our hope is that you will continue to practice Fat Free Yoga as an important investment for health and inner fulfillment. We wish you joy, health, and abundant blessings! P.S. Also, please note that a "Kundalini Awakening," simply means that one's energy is flowing optimally and that all of one's gifts are amplified in an inspired graceful way. There is no other-worldly or extreme phenomena associated with the awakening of Kundalini. That blossoming of our higher potential is our natural state as humans.
Urban Hipster
My hip/psoas have been weak and less flexible than the right for years. I needed surgery in my left eye. My left shoulder froze and now I have a kidney stone on the left side. Surely this isn't coincidence? Any insight you may have is very mcuh appreciated! Thanks
As far as your hip/psoas imbalance, none of us are perfectly symmetrical and over time when one is doing a yoga practice, we discover just how different our right/left side bodies can be! One wonderful benefit of a regular practice is that it will eventually bring our two sides into harmony and balance. Usually one side of our body is tighter than the other but it is not an accident which side it is. The left side of our body relates to feminine/mother issues and the right side masculine/father issues. Your symptoms could very well mean that your feminine/receptive side is blocked somewhat, or that mother issues are still pending. We recommend some extra attention to hip balancing. Our Yoga for Beginners & Beyond: Stretch, Strengthen, Be Stress Free DVD as well as our new Happy Hormones DVD will both be helpful with this. Our upcoming book will have some exercises to address pelvic balance. We also recommend So Darshan Chakra Kriya to get to and through the core issues which may be causing this. You can read about So Darshan under "S" in our A-Z Health Archive on our website: raviana.com
Can You OD on Kundalini?
What if your kundalini energy is already risen? Could it be over-kill to keep doing more kundalini?
It is important not to think of "Kundalini Rising," too literally, or as a one-off phenomena. We were born to live in the fullness of Spirit, in the flow of our Creative Potential and Inner Excellence. Kundalini Yoga is a technology which helps us to be firing on all cylinders every day. If our Kundalini is already "risen," then what's called for is Kundalini Yoga so that it can stay that way. Actually, to be accurate, "raising" Kundalini is only the first step. The process of Spirit Rising is ultimately about integration and balance. Also, not only do we have to contend with the subconscious overload and limiting propensities of this life, according to the Saints and Sages of the ages, we have literally lifetimes of samskaras to filter and transform. There's work to be done and not a moment to lose! This life is a precious gift and Kundalini Yoga is the most powerful technology we have ever found with which to honor this gift. Sat Nam!

Meditation to Release Anger and Negativity
Sit in Easy Pose with a light Neck Lock. Close your eyes. Have your thumb tips and little finger tips meeting on each hand. Begin a backstroke movement arcing your arms up, over, back and around. As one arm comes forward the other moves back. As you do this breathe through a rounded mouth (essentially a Breath of Fire), in conjunction with the arm movements.
Intentionally think about anything and everything that makes you angry, weird, negative, or commotional. Continue to focus on bringing up the anger and negativity throughout the Meditation, increasing the power of the movement and breath. Do this technique for 3 min.
To End: Interlace your fingers, invert your palms, and stretch your arms overhead bringing your upper arms in line with your ears. Deeply inhale through a rounded mouth and visualize yourself surrounded in white, healing light. Exhale through your mouth. Hold the breath out for 10 seconds.Repeat 3 times. Place one hand on your sternum, the other hand over it, and sing a beautiful Kundalini Yoga mantra. Comments: We have two choices in life. We can be a Samurai (focus and flow) or Berserker (rage machine). Be a rage machine in the exercise so that you can be a graceful human being in your life. Shadow anger is a phenomena which compromises our relationships. We lash out at people verbally, through implied condescension, or through any number of aggressive strategies. The fault lies not in our wars but in ourselves! Next time you're in the throes of any form of anger or negativity, try this technique. Processing negative emotions doesn't preclude proper action, it makes us more graceful and effective when we do act. In the various arenas of life the best strategy is: don't take things personally but universally. The ability to do this, when you least feel like doing this, is one of the highest Spiritual attainments. Pass this exercise on. Share it with whomever will receive it. The ability to alter our state at will is a miracle and positions us for an evolutionary leap. Three minutes to a whole new trajectory. Think of all of the positive outcomes which will emanate from that. The greatest valentine you can give someone is to process your "stuff," so that you can be present with them with an open heart. |
