Sat Nam Dear Yogis & Happy New Year! May 2014 be a healthy, abundant, joyful, inspiring, and Spirit-filled year for all of you. May everything that came before give us the Deep Wisdom to thrive and be more alive and may we continually surprise ourselves with beautiful and unprecedented breakthroughs! We are writing from brisk & snowy New York City where we've been working with our graphic designer on our book. The right brain part of this project is now complete (writing creating, and letting the Universe speak to us). Now it's all mechanical: formatting photos, organizing, and last minute touch-ups.
2014 is a "7" year. In a mundane sense, 7 is the number of singular pursuits, from accountant to mad scientist. The driven loner. Spiritually speaking, 7 is all about networking. Not isolating ourselves behind our computers and talking to friends on Facebook, but getting out there into the world and bringing people together. When you spark Spirit through your Kundalini Yoga practice something beautiful comes alive in you. Every pore exudes the fragrance of Infinity. DON'T UNDER ESTIMATE your power to inspire. Everyone is buzzing around like busy bees seeking the source of that fragrance. Get out there and cross-pollinate the world with beauty and blessings! As sung in the Sat Nam song on our new DVD, "Be real then you'll seal it." That means don't be like sunlight on water, dancing across the surface of things. Let your life be based on the foundation of Self and then you can shine steady through all weather.
As our current projects are winding down, our resolution is to teach & outreach even more. We have been blessed to connect with so many amazing, talented, and inspiring people. We want to continue to connect with all of you and have you connect with each other because life is a festival! We drove cross-country once and we are going to do it again on a wild ride book tour. Let's all resolve to not let time/space deter us from celebrating what's truly important. When we remember the great events in our life, whether it was a rock concert or a friend's wedding, we don't focus on what a hassle it was to get there, we focus on the beauty and drama of the thing itself. We've got some great events coming up (see below). We hope you will be inspired to come on the road with us!
Please note that the new Teacher Training in Memphis has been pushed back to March. The original start date weekend is now a weekend of workshops called Kundalini Yoga for a Fresh Start (see below). Energy is also gathering for Teacher Trainings near Boulder, CO and San Francisco. We also want to offer one in the Northeast. Hairstyles of the Kundalini Yogi
According to yoga science, hair is more than just an adornment nature gave to fly our personality flag. Hair is a living antenna. There are compelling reasons why many yogis don't cut their hair. For instance, there are centuries of anecdotal evidence which indicates that the longer our hair, the more powerful our intuition. Yogi Bhajan said that the magnetic field around our hair is more powerful than any other area of our body. Its why yogi's traditionally tie their hair up in a top knot to pull energy up the spine and to receive the incoming cosmic energy. One reason some yogi's keep their head covered is to protect the hair from wind and dust which strip the magnetic field of the hair.
A top knot has other benefits for the Kundalini yogi! Where a traditional pulled back ponytail may work wonderfully for other athletic pursuits, that same style can put quite a crimp in a practice that has you up and down, flipping your legs overhead in plow and shoulder stand, and rocking and rolling on your spine between many exercises! Over the years of practicing and teaching we have come up with a few go-to styles that not only let you flair you flare, but let your practice flow without the need for frequent hair- do adjustments!
Don't worry, no beauty school degree required. If I (Ana) can do these hairstyles, anyone can because I am a total hair klutz! And, by the way, there's no such thing as a bad hair day! Love your hair enough to just go with it. It's a good thing that our hair behaves different everyday. It nudges us to do something inventive and keep things fresh.
Hair Down. Okay, first the no-brainer. Wear it down! Its good to give your hair an occa- sional rest from bands and ties and hats, all things which can stress hair follicles if worn to excess. Let your hair cascade on those twists, Cat/Cows, and Miracle Bends and feel new circulation nourish your scalp and tresses.
High Pony. In Kundalini Yoga you never know when you are going to be suddenly flat on your back for some navel stoking nabhi kriya! You definitely don't want a clump of hair on the back of your cervical spine messing with your neck alignment! A high pony is wonderfully easy! Simply brush all your hair into a long pony right at the crown. Use a boars hair brush to really get it smooth to your scalp And watch your hair alignment! You want it on the crown because the positioning here aligns with gravity and lets it stay in place without pulling on sensitive roots. Option: Pony not working due to frizz, etc. - braid it! You will be turning that frizz into its sleek polarity! Plus this look is very sporty & fun!
Top Knot: When we were scanning photos for this newsletter I realized that this must be a favorite of mine. There were just so many top knot photos! The top knot is another version of the high pony but it looks a little more pulled together so I like it for teaching. Start with the high pony instructions. Then, either twist the pony and pin with bobby pins, or do my easy (okay, lazy hehe) method of wrapping your band twice around your pony and on the third go, don't pull it all the way through. This makes a little hair loop which I prefer. It looks a little less fussy and done, and no pins!
Hair too short to make the knot? It still may not be too short for a High Pony. Rock a straight up pebbles style do. Practical and cute at the same time!
No commitment Low Pony. This one I use a lot. A soft loose scrunchie gives me the option of quickly releasing my pony as I roll onto my back. The tie serves as a bracelet as I rock some leg & arm raises!
Two Ponies. Okay, some may feel this is childish but done low it can actually be quite elegant,classy, and grown-up and it is completely Kundalini-friendly! One, because sometimes you do feel like a little kid at playtime during your practice, and two, there is nothing on the back on your neck, so you can rock and roll on your back to your hearts content!
Two Braids. And if two ponies feels somehow like cheating because its just tooo easy, how about two braids? Yes, braids can be childish too but not while camping or practicing yoga somehow. There, they are a timeless perfect expression of warrior innovation,dedication, and fierce focus. Again, the hair is off your neck and tamed into submission so you can focus focus focus on your awesome practice!
Two Buns. Oh I love this one because it is so cute and looks like you took a little more effort without there really being hardly any. You have to place your buns wide enough so that the back of your neck is unencumbered (all these styles are about that important neck alignment if you haven't noticed). To do this, simply make two ponies, a little higher than our low ponies above. Tie the bands close to your head, then twist each pony until it winds around itself and secure them in place with bobby pins.

 Lower Back Pain Hey Ana & Ravi, hope you are well? Can you please let me know, the best Kundalini exercise for lower back pain and the sarco illiac joint as i am suffering quite badly at the moment....Sat nam
The type of discomfort you describe is often caused by an imbalance in the pelvis, or inflammation of the connective tissue which holds the three large bones of the pelvis together. We would recommend our Green Energy DVD, modifying the Cobras as necessary. Also our new Yoga for Beginners and Beyond
to help with pelvic balance and strength. Here is a simple exercise which can help: lie on your stomach, rest your head on your hands face forward and simply rock your hips side to side for 3 minutes at a time. We do this on many DVDs between exercises that stretch the spine such as Cobra and Bow Pose. You also might want to alternate between ice and heat and take curcumin and ginger. Feel better fast! Hello Ana, Happy Holidays to you! I wanted to share my little health story with you and give thanks - your yoga health archive on the website and DVDs have helped me to overcome something I wasn't sure was possible. I had been on the birth control pill for about 16 years, and I decided to go off it at the beginning of 2013. My periods went wacky and irregular, then, on May the 4th, it was the last time I saw my period for several months. I had started to break out all over my back so I figured something was wrong. In the fall I went to see the doctor and had a blood test and ultrasound done. The doctor suspected PCOS, due to the cysts they detected on my ovaries, and my blood test revealed an imbalance in hormones. My doctor first suggested going back on the pill to regulate, but I didn't want to. My husband and I may want to try and have a baby some day, and I was also experiencing real emotional lows from birth control for so long - I think my body had had enough. My doctor then warned me about the dangers of not getting my period, especially if it doesn't show for several years (endometrial cancer), which kind of scared me...but I decided to go home and soak on this information. So I did some research of my own, and looked at the raviana health archive and read about PCOS, infertility, irregular cycles etc. I was determined to try and get my period on my own, without the use of birth control pill. I started doing Fat Free Yoga and Yoga Beauty Body on a regular basis, and I introduced green smoothies into my diet. I added some health food powders like maca and spirulina along with kale, apple, banana...all the good stuff! This was almost 2 weeks ago. And, this morning the day after the winter solstice (which feels fitting, somehow) I woke up with my period again. I didn't think it would happen so soon, but here it is, and I feel overjoyed. I will obviously keep going with this routine and I have ordered the Happy Hormones DVD which I am sure will help as well. So thank you to you and Ravi for providing such an extensive health archive on your website and for continuing to make your DVDs. I've always loved Kundalini yoga, through your DvDs, but now I can say it actually helped me "fix" a health problem. All the best to you and Ravi in the New Year. I'm a 30 year old male and I'm practicing your workouts everyday for 3 years now. Before that I was fat, a lot of depression, eating unhealthy, very stiff. If you see me now you wouldn't believe how young and healthy I look, and also I feel so good and positive everyday.
To be honest, I downloaded all your dvd's illegal. I'm very sorry about that, I didn't had so much money. So that's the reason I want to buy all your dvd's now...... I'm really thankful for all your lesson that's brought me back to life and I want to continue doing it every upcoming day of my life. I love you two a lot,

 Guru Nanak's Treasure Meditation
Sit in Easy Pose. Raise your right arm in front of your chest, bend your elbow so your forearm is parallel to the ground with your palm facing down in front of your heart center. Raise your left arm up as if taking an oath with your upper arm parallel to the ground, at shoulder level. Your left hand is in gyan mudra (index finger and thumb tip meeting), and your left palm faces forward. Your eyes are one-tenth open and focused at the tip of your nose. Inhale and chant:
Har Har Har Har Haree Haree
Each Har is one beat, and each Haree is two beats. The entire mantra is repeated in a monotone on a single breath. Inhale deeply between repetitions. Each repetition of the mantra takes about 7-8 seconds. When you chant Har your mouth is open as if in a 3/4 yawn. Pull your navel on each Har. Start with 11 min. and work up to 31 min. Har is the Creativity of the Infinite. Haree means to the manifestation of that Creativity. This Meditation will help you to harness the Power of the Universe itself to fill your life with beautiful blessings. This sacred Meditation was taught by Guru Nanak and was passed on by his son, Master Yogi, Baba Siri Chand and, later, by Guru Hargobind. also a Great Master. With that pedigree this technique can't fail. Over time, each generation of a lineage adds potency and blessings to a practice (which was powerful to begin with). We hope that you will use this Meditation to claim your Divine inheritance, the beauty and bounty the Universe has ceded to each of us. Remember, you deserve the best and to be blessed. In 2014 may you master the art of both giving and receiving. And may we always remember that the ultimate treasure is the priceless jewel of Self.
