The story of your life
Did you know that there is an inevitable progression in each of our lives?
It revolves around archetypal roles. At crucial times in our lives, through alternating periods of expansion and contraction, we experience these seasons of self-growth: The Innocent, The Orphan, The Wanderer, The Warrior, The Martyr, and the Magician.
Why is this important? Because this represents a living template for the story of our lives. When we are able to navigate successfully through these stages we can arrive at the totality of ourselves.

1. The Innocent.  Remember that golden time when your faith in the human condition was untainted by trial? When the world was a Garden of Eden, and it seemed as if every option was open to you and love was unconditional? This passage of life relates to infancy but many people prolong it as long as possible, sometimes even into adulthood, when at all costs, they strive to stay on the surface of things and cultivate reasons not to be accountable or truly present. After all, who wants to leave paradise and have to work for a living? This stage is a gift to us so that we have time (figuratively and literally) to get our feet firmly under us,

2. The Orphan. There comes a time though, when we discover that Santa Claus is a marketing tool and the people we believed in have long shadows. We become existential in our outlook and self-anarchy seems the only solution. Many people resort to their addiction of choice to ease the pain of (or avoid) this passage. It is common in this stage to live looking back for what was lost instead of looking forward for what can be. Ultimately we have to recognize that to be human means to participate in the Fall. In the midst of our disillusionment we feel punished for no good reason and betrayed. What we come to realize is that circumstances align to propel us on the journey of a lifetime, and that no one can walk in Grace unless they've matriculated through experience.

3. The Wanderer In order to initiate our personal odyssey, we have to strike out (no one can succeed without having failed) on the road (physically or metaphysically), to see what's out there and to experience the diversity of life and existence. Normally, this stage begins in adolescence when we begin to articulate for ourselves that we are our own persons and that adventures are waiting. This stage is a Great Escape from what we perceive as captivity. Freedom is the watchword for this stage and we sustain ourselves by going fishing in the dark waters of self. What we need to learn here is what's a "keeper," and what isn't.

4. The Warrior. To extend the previous metaphor, one day we hook a a big and beautiful fish and realize that it's the fish we've been waiting for! In practical terms, it's time to take a stand and be tested on the touchstone of our inner discipline. Concurrently we realize that we have the power to contend victoriously in the arena of life. This entails using our personal power to get what we want and then fiercely going forward, "all in." This could entail deciding to have kids, embracing a cause or career you believe in, or just being fearless in everything you do.

5. The Martyr Have you been punishing yourself for years because you feel that it's the only bona fide path to self-redemption? Maybe you woke up one day and realized that you've been waging war against your fat for 20 years, and that there's a big and beautiful world out there. Maybe you've been in a relationship which has necessitated you keeping your unique creativity under wraps. We then realize that the only one holding us back is ourselves. Everyone needs to go through the martyr stage, because we can't experience our uniqueness until we've experienced its opposite.

6. The Magician. Magic is in the air!  Awesome synchronicities are an everyday occurrence. Everything flows because we've arrived at a place where we are able to trust in the Universe and its grand design. We are the height of our powers and Spirit is alive in us. We are happy and humble and there is no doubt. IMPORTANT: If you effect the guise of Magician prematurely, narcissistic tendencies drive you to try to recreate the world in your own image. Also, it is possible to be in magic mode via an unwillingness to come in for a landing in life (Innocent or Wanderer Mode). The most important message, in this model, is that you have to go through all of the steps until you can authentically pull a white rabbit out of the hat of Self. And then what? Offer your magic to the world!

It's important to note that you may not experience the above stages (except for the Magician) in the order given. Some people never get to experience their Innocence so they being life as orphans. Then it's very common to revert back to
Innocence by setting up their lives for safety's sake. This might entail joining a cult, or corporation. Being told what to do and how to live. Or maybe you start your Wanderer Stage at age 50 when you decide that painting water colors is far more fulfilling than creating spread sheets.

To Sum It All Up:
Mapping your life based on this model can help you ease regrets. Everyone has to walk in the mud before they can walk in the light. Have the exigencies of life caused you to skip steps? How can you complete those steps without causing too much pain and drama for the people in your life. The beauty of Kundalini Yoga / Meditation is that you can do a lot of this work internally and authentically deliver yourself to Magic mode. Keeping letting go and letting in, honor and savor your soul, and let your words and actions rings true. Let your practice perfect you.

Kundalini Yoga for Autism

Hi Ravi & Ana, My 15 year old son is high functioning autistic. Would any of the exercises help him from your experience? I find great benefit in the Fat Free workouts, especially with anxiety and fatigue.. Would it be ok to do them twice in one day, if needed? Thanks & Regards,

It would definitely be okay to do Fat Free Yoga twice per day. For your son, we recommend the Awaken Your senses segment on our Solar Power DVD, as well as the Brain Booster segment on our Yoga House Call DVD. In addition we recommend the Sa-Ta-Na-Ma Meditation which is also taught on the Yoga House Call DVD. Overall, any and all of Kundalini Yoga will be very helpful for your son. Autism is said to have a genetic component, but many people have reported that detoxing heavy metals from the body (via chelation therapy, etc., as well as our Yoga Cleanse DVD) and addressing food allergies, has made a huge difference. Generally it is a combination of holistic approaches which seems to work best. Please keep us posted!

Kundalini for Women

Hello. Is Kundalini Yoga appropriate for women? Wasn't it originally designed for men? Kind Regards

Thanks for writing. Kundalini Yoga is definitely great for women. Its namesake, Kundalini, is a Feminine Concept: Energy in Manifestation = Spirit! Spirit was meant to blossom in every human. Also, each person has a blend of both masculine and feminine to a greater or lesser degree. Kundalini Yoga has elements of both. The exercises are often intensely physical, strengthening us on all levels so we can assert our will, and go after what we want (masculine). Chanting, meditation, hip and heart opening, and devotion are more "feminine" (be receptive and let all good things come to us). Women these days have to be it all! Proactive, confident, courageous, calm, intuitive, and patient. Kundalini Yoga is the perfect practice for this. Originally K. Yoga was taught to everyone equally. Then in history as we know it, yoga was mostly taught and practiced by men. It's interesting to note that our Yoga Beauty Body DVD, which includes the Magnificent 7 exercises, which are important for a woman to do on a daily basis, continues to be one of the most popular workouts with our male students. That's because we all need to work on pretty much the same things, and all things lead to balance.

In the Sikh tradition (Kundalini Yoga is an inner school of this tradition) men
and women are equal. For example, there are women ministers. Bottom line: respect for the Eternal Feminine is the hope for the world!

Levitation

Hi guys. I was wondering if you could share a Kundalini Yoga exercise to levitate. I think that that would be a very cool thing to learn how to do. Thank you!

Thanks for writing. Story: Buddha was walking along a riverbank when someone called to him from the other side. "Hey Holy Man, check this out," he yelled. He then proceeded to walk on water to the bank where Buddha was standing. Buddha said to him, "How long did it take you to perfect that siddhi (yogic power)." "22 years or practice, many hours a day." Buddha said, "I can pay a ferry man a few coins to do the same thing. Your time would be better spent on elevating consciousness."

There have been bona fide examples of holy people spontaneously levitating, and that is a gift of Grace to show the world that the "impossible," is possible, but to set an intention to do that, we feel is not the best use of your time (also developing "powers," for their own sake is against the rules of the game). There is so much karma cleansing, mind focusing, and heart opening to be done, we don't have a moment to lose. The Universe will grant you the miraculous powers which you need to live your Destiny (serve Spirit) gloriously and victoriously.

Marharish Mahesh Yogi, the person who taught the Beatles to meditate, and who was the progenitor of TM, made what we feel is a strategic error: just when his method was gaining wide credibility as a stress management tool, he started teaching very expensive courses to teach people how to levitate. It sort of tainted the whole brand. What those of us on the yogic path are here to do is to teach people to levitate their Consciousness. All miracles will emanate from that.

Yogi Bhajan taught an exercise to levitate. He taught it not so we would actually spend time learning that trick, but to let "secret," practices out of the bag so that they could be studied by yogis and scientists of the future. The exercise to levitate is to be in Full Lotus, and inhale (using your hands) and hold the breath as you push yourself off of the ground, and let your buttocks strike the ground. Do this as many times as you can with the breath held. Each time you go up feel light and lighter.
According to Yogi Bhajan, it will take longer and longer to come down!

Meditation of the
Month

Sahaj Yoga
taught by Yogi Bhajan January 12, 1976

Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine. Feel like a perfect yogi, but also feel relaxed.  Place your hands in your lap, right hand resting in your left hand with your thumbs gently touching. Your eyes are 9/10  closed. As you inhale, mentally travel along your spine from your tailbone up over your head and then to the tip of your nose. As you do this, chant mentally:
       Mahan Kal.
As you exhale mentally trace the same route back. Travel from the tip of your nose back down along your spine to your tailbone. As you do this mentally chant the mantra Kal Ka, visualizing a white radiance along your spine.

To End: Inhale and raise your arms overhead and vigorously shake your arms. Relax the breath, lower your arms, and then meditate in silence for a minute before resuming normal activity.

This mantra means:  Great Flow of Being. Flow of Eternal Power (Kundalini).
Begin with 11 min. of practice and slow build up to 31 min. over time. This Meditation was practiced by Guru Gobind Singh (the Tenth Sikh Master) three hundred years ago. Yogi Bhajan said,  "Any person, in any non-improved state of mind, body, and soul can rise to any level of consciousness by doing this. Get into it. With a little practice you will always be in a state of bliss."

When Kundalini is present anything is possible. All healing is possible. Your inner evolution is fast-tracked. Your positive attributes and creative gifts are magnifed. This Meditation is an invitation to the Goddess Kundalini to attend the celebration of your life. Her RSVP will make you Regal. Shining. Victorious. Powerful.
