We become what we focus on. When we spend a little time each day focusing on our Kundalini practice, we earn the title Kundalini Yogi. What is that? Someone fit and strong, radiating clarity, calm, enthusiasm and energy. Someone everyone wants to be around. Someone who lives in the flow of Spirit. So, this year stop thinking about maybe doing and JUST DO IT! We have grouped together some DVDs for your inspirational pleasure. Rotate your workouts, or choose one set and do it for 40 days, or 90. You literally can't go wrong. Remember "Keep Up and you will be Kept Up!" Let's all KEEP UP and be Great in 2013 and Beyond!

Beautiful Balance
Standing or sitting with eyes closed can help one assess where one is holding tension and allow a shift into a better relationship with gravity. Hi Ana and Ravi, I teach KY and one of my students asked me what yogi bhajan said about working on balance. Since as we age our proprioceptors diminish -she was told to do some of the standing balance poses with eyes closed in order to foster better proprioception. I couldn't find anything on this matter to tell her. Do you have any experience with this? Sounds like she wants to improve her balance with the ongoing changes of aging. Thanks for any help you can offer.
It is our understanding that the proprioceptive nervous system represents our range of motion and flexibility quotient based on the sense of ourselves in physical space. That self-program- ming is actually arbitrary, based on how we view ourselves in relation to the world. When someone is in a coma, or unconscious, they are completely pliable. When that same person is conscious their defenses kick in. As many people age they begin to view the world as an increasingly dangerous place. What that advice probably implied is that shifting our focus to an internal one can have the effect of expanding our sensory orientation beyond the body.
For Seniors it's really important to stay hydrated (dehydration can cause dizziness). Conscious breathing will stimulate the optic nerves and strengthen the nervous system for better coordination. Exercises such as "Ravi Rolls," on Fat Free Yoga and the Brain Booster segment on Yoga House Call can balance the brain hemispheres for better balance overall.
Dear Ana & Ravi, First of all thank you for your wonderful DVD workouts. If it weren't for my daily dose of Ky I don't what I'd do. I'm writing to you because I'm in a lot of pain over an issue which I just can't seem to get a handle on. Every time I get in a relationship I find myself doing things to push the person away because I feel that sooner or later they are going to betray me somehow or that when they say they love me it's not real. How can I just relax and let someone into my life? Appreciation in advance for whatever advice you can give me.
Your pattern is one which many people have to contend with. It is often a result of having received love (growing up) which was conditional. Too often parents, consciously or unconsciously, try to make their children into their own image. They forget that everyone, even their kids, has a right to be who they will be. This conditional love creates low self esteem and (understandably) a kind of emotional paranoia. Our human pattern is to look for patterns among the things which befall us. People are imperfect and sometimes we have no say in the matter (initially) of what people do or don't do in relation to us. Not knowing any better we come to believe that it's our fault. That make us feel that we're somehow faulty. Then we go through life harboring that suspicion. Then we recreate the circumstances which fulfill that negative prophecy of self. What to do? First thing is to put on the brakes and fake it 'til you make it. Create a vacuum for the Universe to fill with the love you deserve. What is the love you deserve? Often it's the love you are willing to risk, to give. What to do is to work from the outside in and inside out simultaneously. Working from the inside out entails getting in there and repatterning those patterns. This can be accomplished most powerfully through the technology of Kundalini Yoga. We highly recommend that you practice our Kundalini Yoga Transformer DVD, especially the Purify Your Past segment, which when done for seven days in a row, can bring deep and lasting positive changes on the emotional level. And of course there's the So Darshan Chakra Kriya Meditation (read about it under "S" on the A-Z Health Archive on www.raviana.com. Working from the outside in entails behavior modification. That means that the next time you find yourself in a relationship which seems right on all levels, practice the art of fearless surrender. Relationship is a Spiritual Path unto itself and it provides the opportunity to heal our pasts and transform forever. Please keep us posted!
Agitation After Practice
Dear Ravi and Ana, Sat Nam! I have some questions regarding my personal progression.I have recently been doing a lot more Kundalini yoga and in particular the Warrior DVD. Every time after I finish it I feel quite agitated, angry and irritated(also feed up). I tend to have a strange feeling in my tummy and I can't seem to explain it. All this tend to last about 12 hours and then I seem to be my normal self. My husband has recently really noticed it and has told me not do the KY, because of how angry and irritated I tend to be. I am really getting worried and don't know the way forward. Can you suggest what I should do.What you describe is a sign that your liver is detoxing, which is a good thing. The Warrior Workout DVD is specifically for circulation and elimination of toxins. What you are experiencing is very similar to how people get headaches and experience bad moods when they quit coffee etc. One thing which will help is to meditate in silence after your practice: long light breathing, focusing at the Third Eye, inhaling Sat, exhaling Nam. Do it for a few minutes before resuming normal activity. That will make a big difference. Also, be sure and drink lots of pure water to help the detox process. This should be a very temporary situation, but if it persists, back off from Warrior Workout for now because sometimes it is possible to detox too quickly. If you do keep doing Warrior Workout, the phenomena you describe will become less and less. Try to have your lifestyle support your detox. Eat pure and eat light and cut out the usual suspects. Most people don't realize the extent to which we all need to detox physically, emotionally, and beyond. Not only is there the tremendous backlog of possibly years of less than conscious living, but there are also the physical and mental impurities which we take in every day. Self-purification is a process which never ends. That's why Kundalini Yoga is so necessary and valuable. Please keep us posted!
Calories Burned During Kundalini Yoga
I absolutely love working out to your Dvds and my favorites at the moment are the Yoga Flow bootcamp and Fat Free Yoga. I was wondering if you could tell me approximately how many calories I am burning doing these Dvds though, in particular the Yoga Flow bootcamp? Although I do yoga for more than the physical, I am trying to lose some baby pounds and am tracking what I eat and the exercise I do. I weigh about 150 pounds at the moment and I've been searching the net trying to find a figure for calories burned during a 60 minute kundalini yoga practice but I'm having no joy. Everywhere seems to list all disciplines of yoga except kundalini. Hope you can help? I also have a question about yoga mats... I have a basic everlast gym mat but I find when I'm doing weight bearing postures on my arms, my hands tend to slip on it. What is the best type of mat for me to purchase to do yoga on do you think?
Thanks for writing. As you know, there are so many variables to take into account when trying to assess how many calories a certain type of workout burns. We think that we are safe in saying that our Yoga Flow Bootcamp burns 450-550 calories an hour. There is also the additional aerobic benefit (from all of K. Yoga) of the breathing which spikes metabolism for the rest of the day.
We would advise investing in a sticky mat (the thick kind so that you can really rock your Rocking Bow Pose). That's A sticky mat is best for yoga, especially yoga which includes a flow like on our Bootcamp DVD. One of the most important elements for successful weight loss is to keep blood sugar levels stable. Try eating a few raw brazil nuts, or a piece of fruit, between meals. Eat light at night. Try to include more salads in your diet. Success in slimming entails patience. A great definition of patience is: doing something else in the meantime. Shake up your routine. Let your inner athlete, artist, entrepeneur be given free reign. The best diet is to do what we love! Please keep us posted.

Meditation of the Month: Brahm Mudra Sit with the spine straight. Make fists of both hands. The thumb should be on the outside of the fist with your index fingers pointing straight up. Hold the two hands so that they face each other. The left hand is lower, the left index fingertip is even with the base of the right thumb. Yogi Bhajan said that, "The two hands are like conches pointing to God." The eyes are open. Gaze straight ahead through the space created by the hands. Your hands are about 1 ft. in front of your face. Keep the back of your neck long, chin pulled in slightly (Neck Lock) Mentally chant the mantra: Ad (Odd) Guray Namay, Jugad Guray Namay, Sat Guray Namay, Siree Guru Dev-ay Namay. After 11 min. close your eyes. Hold this position and chant the mantra aloud in a monotone at a moderate rhythm. Comments: "This mudra symbolizes yin and yang pointing towards God. It is a mudra of immediate Spirit and protection. All previous incarnations, the present, and the future, shall be directed towards righteousness. This mudra changes the metabolism of the mind. The hand position is a "funny mandala" called "Brahm Mandala." This Meditation is great to practice when your behavior is at odds with your higher intentions. It is also good for deep depression and overall inconsistency in character. It creates happiness where there was no happiness. The mantra used in this Meditation is for protection. Chant it before you drive, get on a plane, or walk out the door. It is said that if you were fated to have an accident, it can be averted through the agency of this vibratory effect. This mantra gives an 11 second leeway in time and space. That can make all the difference! There is a story associated with this mantra. An illiterate cobbler asked Guru Arjan (5th in the lineage of 10 Sikh Gurus) for a personal mantra. Guru Arjan asked him to recite specific prayers from the SIkh liturgy each day. The cobbler said that he couldn't possibly memorize something so long. Guru Arjan suggested that he do this mantra. So, as the cobbler was repairing people's sandals he would chant this mantra all day long. It came to pass that when people wore the sandals which the cobbler had worked on, they became healed of all their afflications. Pretty soon there was a line a mile long outside of the cobblers little hut. This mantra, called the Mangalacharan Mantra (charan meets feet, or at the feet of) will help you to increase the magnitude of your mission: to use your gifts to heal, uplift, and inspire. The moral of the story is that even if you are a shoemaker, you can make a difference in people's lives! If you would like a free pronunciation sound file for this mantra, please e-mail us at ravianayoga(at)aol.com |
