Beneficial ways to grow without expanding your weight

Thanksgiving commemorates the harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621 and is the time to express gratitude.  It is a time to celebrate with loved ones and to give thanks to the harvests.  Our fruits of labor become a ceremony of eating and sharing and unfortunately, at times overindulgence and over-eating.  According to the National Institutes of Health, holiday eating can result in an extra pound or two every year.  There are simple ways to combat weight gain by focusing on a healthy balance of food and activity.

It is important to not try to lose weight during the holidays and have realistic goals to maintain your current weight.  Have work out goals that can be fun or activities that can offset increased holiday eating.  Take brisk walks throughout the day to increase your heart rate.  Regular exercise also decreases stress which contributes to increases in cortisol levels.  Cortisol is important for the maintenance of blood pressure and supplies energy to the body.  By stimulating fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, insulin is release and maintenance of blood sugar levels can result in increase of appetite.  Thus it is important to not become stressed and increase cortisol levels.

You will be less tempted to over-indulge if you remember to not skip meals.  Eat a light snack of raw vegetables or fruit.  Avoid alcoholic beverages that are full of calories and sugar.  Bring a dish to the party so everyone can have a healthy option.  Promote healthy eating by preparing a favorite dish lower in fat and calories that can become the newest traditional food in your shared meal.

Before piling your plate high to the moon scout out the buffet beforehand and choose your favorites and skipping the lesser favorites.  Remember to include a balanced plate by adding healthier options.  Eat only until you feel satisfied and allowing room for dessert.  If you overeat and feel stuffed at one meal go light on your next meal.  It is also a good idea to take the focus off food during the holidays by turning the festivities into non-edible projects such as puzzle making, games for the family, dough art decorating, etc...

Share the meaning of the holiday by listing out reasons you are thankful and remind one another how important you are to each other.  Hearing reasons to feel loved gives you a fullness that food cannot.  Lastly, mimicking is a form of imitation and when you eat healthy, maintain controlled portions, exercise, express gratitude others follow suit without conscious thought.  It becomes easy to follow good habits when others around you are similarly in sync.  If you are the first then its nice to know you were the trendsetter to positive actions when others follow suit.

We would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and especially want to thank our extended family and friends for your continued support as we come towards a close this year.  We are very thankful for the upcoming future plans for a new location and we look forward to sharing more soon.  Thank you for allowing Kavana Spa and our wonderful therapists to help and assist you towards your own personal therapeutic goals.
