NEWCLASSES

NEW 1-HOUR INTRODUCTORY CLASSES

Mondays 6pm, Wednesdays 12:15pm and 7:30pm

Maybe you or someone you know wants to learn yoga, but committing 90 minutes every week is just too much for them. These fun, breezy 1-hour classes may be just the right thing. Students will still enjoy a vigorous, active class, and end with soothing relaxation, in this accessible, non-intimidating class for new beginners. IYD members can drop-in for just $12 (nonmembers $16) or buy a 5-pack for $50.

MONTHLY FOCUS: Virabhadrasana I
by Peggy Kwisuk Hong
BKS Iyengar in Virabhadrasana I

From Tadasana, jump into Utthita Hasta Padasana (extended arms and legs), feet 4 to 4-1/2 feet apart. Extend the arms into Urdhva Hastasana (upward arms). Turn the left foot deeply in and turn the right foot out 90 degrees. Rotate the hips to face the right leg. Press into the outer edge of the left foot as you bend the right leg into a 90 degree angle. Lengthening the front of the left thigh, lift the front of the hips up and extend the tailbone down. Reach up through the arms to lengthen the trunk more. Hold the pose for 30 seconds or more, straighten the right leg, turn the feet towards center and repeat on the left side.

This challenging pose brings vitality by lengthening the iliopsoas, the primary hip flexor. It improves digestion, lifts and tones the uterus, and stimulates the heart and lungs.

A Note from IYD instructor Peggy Kwisuk Hong:

I ask for your blessing as I take a long-awaited extended stay in South Korea, from September-December 2014. I will return to teach a full slate of classes come January 2015. In Korea, I plan to teach some Iyengar Yoga, improve my Korean, and reconnect with family and friends. Meanwhile, I am preparing to take my next yoga exam August 8-10, for Intermediate Junior III certification through Iyengar Yoga National Association of US. Please send me good wishes for these upcoming challenging milestones. I am deeply indebted to all my Detroit students, colleagues, and mentees, for your trust, friendship, and support. In my absence, classes will continue with a growing IYD faculty. I hope to see you in my final weeks of Detroit teaching in 2014.
