Expanded Sunday Schedule Begins September 11th

Dear Friends:

As reported in last week's edition of e-Items (available at this link), we'll begin the following schedule on September 11th, a.k.a "Kick-Off" Sunday (services will continue at 9AM & 10:30AM through September 4th):
Sunday Schedule
South Sudan
An Update on South Sudan

The situation in South Sudan, a companion diocese of the diocese of Chicago, has continued to deteriorate. The news since July from Juba, the capital, is that nearly 60,000 people have fled the country and 40,000 are displaced. There is widespread violence, including rape and gang rape. Bishop Joseph is quoted as saying: "Nobody in the armies cares about civilians, but we depend on God for everything."

Juba, where the violence is centered, is the southern-most area of South Sudan. Renk, our companion parish, is at the most northern border between Sudan and South Sudan. Bishop Joseph reports that all is well in Renk. The high school just opened a month or so, ago, building of the diocesan office is underway, agriculture is going well and there is no threat to Renk -- at least for now.

Bishop Joseph will visit Chicago for his annual visit in October, and we look forward to his visit to St. Christopher's and Grace Church. His family is fine and living in Nairobi. He went to Nairobi to get his visa and we are awaiting news from him about Mother Alice and her whereabouts. In the meantime please continue in prayers for South Sudan. Your contribution to Episcopal Relief and Development, which currently distributes aid to South Sudan, would also be appreciated.

Seeking Catechist Nominations

Children's formation at Grace is in the midst of an important transition. As our long partnership with St. Giles comes to a close, we are devoting extra attention to preparing our parish for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in the fall. While Kendall and others are working hard to prepare the spaces and acquire materials for the children, all of this is dependent on the presence of committed Catechists! These are the folks who sit with children and help them discover the love of God. We are calling on the Grace community to nominate parishioners who they believe would be a good fit for this important ministry. We are seeking folks who have spent at least a year in the community, who are prayerful, kind, and willing to commit to Sunday mornings and training. You do not need to be a teacher by profession to be a wonderful Catechist. Many Catechists find that leading Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is extraordinarily enriching for their own spiritual lives. Those nominated will go through a discernment conversation with Kendall and current Catechists.

Please contact Kendall Batten Kalantzis for further information.
