Streamers. Crosses. Torches. Lay people. Bishops. Priests. Deacons. Ecumenical visitors. Interfaith participants. Live-streaming video across the world. All of those pieces will be gathered this Sunday, November 1, as The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry is installed as our 27th Presiding Bishop. Live stream of the service in Washington, DC, to begin at Noon (11AM Central) will be at this link.
He will serve as the chief pastor to the Episcopal Church's 2.1 million members in 17 countries and 108 dioceses, ecumenical officer, and primate, joining leaders of the other 38 Anglican Provinces in consultation for global good and reconciliation.
Our National Cathedral and venues across this planet, will watch a historic moment. Michael Curry will serve as this part of the Anglican Communion's first African American Presiding Bishop. He was elected with an overwhelming majority.
Bishop Curry's passion for the gospel is contagious. His love for Jesus is palpable. I pray that we support his voice in our own ministries and find a way to catch on fire with the love of God that he so desperately believes in.
The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori was also a history maker. She was an eloquent speaker for the rights of all. Justice was a theme of her - for people and the environment, and for the Episcopal Church. Jefferts Schori has issued a press release, at this link, about her time as Presiding Bishop.
My prayer is that Bishop Curry will be treated with more respect. My fear is that our country will be afraid of a strong, black leader.
I believe that God has called him to be in this position - at this time and in this moment. I am thankful that the Bishops felt the power of the Holy Spirit moving in his election and in his personhood.
Bishop Curry cannot lead alone. He needs us to follow the ways of Jesus in all that we do.
Let's bring out the old WWJD again! Ask yourselves, What Would Jesus Do to make this world filled with peace, economic justice, freedom for all, and peace in this community that we call Grace.
God bless Bishop Schori for her ministry and her future ministries. God bless Bishop curry as he, through the grace of God, enters this new ministry as our Spiritual Leader.
Peace, Shawn

J2A Collects Medicine Bottles for Malawi
|
Anyone on prescription medicines finds themselves a bit uncomfortable when throwing away so many empty medicine bottles. It is obvious our landfills do not need these plastic containers; there is enough trash going into the landfills already.
While first world nations throw away perfectly good medicine bottles, medical pharmacies and hospital facilities in Malawi often find themselves with nothing except torn pieces of paper in which to wrap medicine for their patients.
This is often seen in rural hospitals and villages where the poorest of the nation try to live and survive.
We can help to change this. The Youth of J2A are collecting empty medicine bottles for the Malawi Project. A collection box will be in the Parish Hall starting on Sunday, November 1st.
Please remove the labels and all traces of label adhesive.
Collecting these medicine bottles will help families in a third world country keep their medicines clean, out of reach of small children, and safe while they are being used. Once collected we will send the bottles to the Malawi Project for shipment to Malawi.

We Make the Road by Walking
|
In Brian McLaren's book, We Make the Road by Walking, we are reminded that we are not finished yet. McLaren claims that individuals and communities are "still in the making." He states that we have the capacity to learn, mature, think, change and grow and that we also have the freedom to stagnate, regress, constrict, and lose our way. McLaren invites us to think about which way we will go.
I love that he reminds me and us that we play a vital role in choosing and creating our futures. His claim is that we make the road by walking.
Please will you join me in reading this book? Click here to email me with your interest. -Shawn
