In honor of the Feast of St. Luke, I share the following prayers with you: Prayer of the Order of Saint Luke Almighty God, who inspired Your servant Luke the Physician to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of Your Son: Graciously continue in Your Church the love and power to heal, to the praise and glory of Your Name, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. _________________
Let holy Luke, Thine Evangelist, we beseech Thee, O Lord, intercede for us, who for the glory of Thy name ever bore in his body the mortification of the Cross. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. _________________
Most charming and saintly Physician, you were animated by the heavenly Spirit of love. In faithfully detailing the humanity of Jesus, you also showed his divinity and his genuine compassion for all human beings. Inspire our physicians with your professionalism and with the divine compassion for their patients. Enable them to cure the ills of both body and spirit that afflict so many in our day. Amen.

St. Luke's in Renk, South Sudan
|
On Sunday afternoon October 4th, members of Grace and St. Christopher's Churches met at St. Christopher's for a prayer service and conversation with Bishop Joseph, bishop of Renk, South Sudan. St. Luke's, our partner parish, is located in Renk.
Several members from Grace Church attended and we had a lively conversation with Bishop Joseph. He gave us a bit of background about the war of independence from Sudan and the current civil war. The good news was that the situation is somewhat better now in Renk. It is the safest area in the country now, and some of the people who fled have returned. As a result of the unrest, many people lost everything, and some now live in camps in the area. The diocese is one of their main sources for help. Supplies and food are very expensive and the need is great.
Mother Alice had returned to St. Luke's, and was again taking care of her congregation. However, she is presently away again due to the health of her husband. Upon her return, she is hoping to rebuild the other two rooms of her home.
Bishop Joseph told us that his first priority is to have us pray continually for South Sudan and the diocese. One of their greatest current needs is for a first class sound system. This would not only be for use of the congregation, but could be rented out to become a source of income. The task is to identify one. Once identified it could be purchased in Nairobi, Kenya (which would make it less expensive than purchasing it here or in England and shipping it to South Sudan). We have to work on developing a plan to raise the funds and to figure out over what time period this could be accomplished.
The civil war is ongoing and much will depend on how that goes. In the meantime, we continue to pray.

A very special birthday party to celebrate Lil Hohmann's 75th birthday is being planned for Saturday night, Nov. 21 at 6:30. Details will follow in the next few weeks, but please mark your calendars now and plan to join in the fun. Contact Sue Wells or Leslie Atwood to volunteer.
The PADS Cooks will be doing the cooking and our Alto Ladies Singers will be doing some special music. It will not only be a fun evening, but hopefully a small thank you to Lil for doing everything from sewing vestments, to years of cooking Thanksgiving and Boar's Head feasts, to making curtains for many, many windows; painting and more painting, and now even custom tile installations. Wow! We are very grateful for all her many years of exceptional service to Grace Church. We hope you can all join us.
