What is this Place We Call Grace?

Perhaps the pictures below, and the words of Hubertus Oosterhuis might help you to find your own words about Grace and grace.

What is this place, where we are meeting?
Only a house, the earth its floor.
Walls and a roof, sheltering people,
Windows for light, an open door.
Yet it becomes a body that lives
When we are gathered here,
And know our God is near.

Words from afar, stars that are falling.
Sparks that are sown in us like seed;
Names for our God, dreams, signs and wonders
Sent from the past are all we need.
We in this place remember and speak
Again what we have heard:
God's free redeeming word.

And we accept bread at his table,
Broken and shared, a living sign.
Here in this world, dying and living,
We are each other's bread and wine.
This is the place where we can receive
What we need to increase:
Our justice and God's peace.

Bishop of Renk to Visit Oak Park
Please help us welcome Bishop Joseph Garang Atem this Sunday
Bishop Joseph Atem
We have been filling you in for the last few weeks about our partner parish (St. Luke's in Renk) in the South Sudan. You will have a chance to learn more this Sunday when the Bishop of Renk, Joseph Garang Atem, comes to Oak Park to tell us about what is going on there.

We will be having a joint event with our sister Episcopal parish in Oak Park, St. Christopher's, this Sunday, October 4. This is the schedule:

5:30 pm   Evening Prayer
6:00 pm   light refreshments and conversation with Bishop Joseph

The event will take place at St. Christopher's, 545 S. East Ave. (East & Adams) in Oak Park.

Let's have a good turn-out from Grace, so please put this on your calendar. Also, please consider helping out by bringing some light refreshments to share during the discussion.

If you have any questions, please contact Jon Baumgarten or Joan Anderson.
Bishop's Visit to Grace
Jeffrey Lee, Bishop of Chicago Our diocesan Bishop, Jeffrey Lee, will be with us on October 11th for our Bishop's Visitation.

Stop Mass Incarceration Network
Sam Love recently discovered a group that is working towards the elimination of injustice in our world. Perhaps this is a group that embodies the various conversations that have been happening here at Grace. Here is a little bit about the group:

The Stop Mass Incarceration Network (SMIN) is initiating an effort to accelerate the movement to stop the injustice of:
1. Mass incarceration and police brutality.
2. The racially biased policies and practices of the police, courts and U.S. legal system.

In addition, they strive to support the human rights of both formerly incarcerated and current prisoners.
Save the Date
Lil A very special birthday party to celebrate Lil Hohmann's 75th birthday is being planned for Saturday night, Nov. 21 at 6:30. Details will follow in the next few weeks, but please mark your calendars now and plan to join in the fun. Contact Sue Wells or Leslie Atwood to volunteer.

The PADS Cooks will be doing the cooking and our Alto Ladies Singers will be doing some special music. It will not only be a fun evening, but hopefully a small thank you to Lil for doing everything from sewing vestments, to years of cooking Thanksgiving and Boar's Head feasts, to making curtains for many, many windows; painting and more painting, and now even custom tile installations. Wow! We are very grateful for all her many years of exceptional service to Grace Church. We hope you can all join us.
