You did not see him doing most of the work he did. He would come in and paint, set up the altar, organize materials, order new items, greet people coming through the building and quietly go about his ministries.
Last night, I gathered with the Altar Guild, wardens and Property Team for a sendoff party for Al Papillon. Our faithful altar guild chair and property team member is moving to New Mexico with his husband, Ted Curtis.
Al's ministries to Grace Church, and the diocese were always done without drawing attention to himself and always to the glory of God. We wish him Godspeed.
There are many other people who offer their gifts of time and talent to this community and I thank all of them/you as well.
We are currently looking for someone who may feel called to lead the Altar Guild and others who would like to join this group who prepares our worship space for all us.
Do you like the beauty of our space? Organized? Faithful? Enjoy working with a fun team? Like to iron? Consider offering your gifts to this ministry. You will not regret it. No one is too young or too old to join. Men. Women. All are welcome. Hours are flexible.
Peace,
Shawn

Prayers for the Altar Guild (author unknown)
On beginning our work
Dear God, be with us this day as we prepare the sanctuary for your people. Make us humble as your instruments, skilled as your creation, reverent in your service. Help us not to let the form of things blind us to their sacred purpose, or personal concerns deafen us to the needs of others. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
On completing our work
Dear God, we have completed the tasks set for us today. Thank you for allowing us this service. May we carry back into the world and into our homes some of the holy mystery that has surrounded us here, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

From the Director of Formation
|
During my first few weeks as Director of Formation at Grace I had the opportunity to attend a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd training. I found myself, along with eight others with a passion for the spiritual development of children, sitting in a child-sized chair in a circle, enraptured by the presentation of the parable of the Mustard Seed. The catechist began: "One time Jesus said the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed." A candle was lit and I listened to the scripture reading. Then I eagerly followed instructions: I placed one hand over my mouth to cover my breath as I peered into the small wooden box containing seeds that seemed no bigger than a pinhead. "I wonder how something so small could grow into something so large as a bush that birds can make a home in?" This presentation has been on my mind often since then, both as a rich image for contemplation in my own spiritual life and also as one I am excited to offer our children at Grace. I appreciate how the mustard seeds were used as symbols to convey a deep truth about God's Kingdom in a tangible way. I am also struck by the intentionality in communicating the truths of the parable in a way accessible to children as young as three. During the presentation we reflected on how small things hold greatness within them and that all growth is from God. Children's own growing bodies illustrate this just as the growing seed does. Finally, like all Catechesis presentations, this one ended with an invitation to wonder. The catechist's goal is not for the children to memorize the "correct answers" to theological questions, but rather to honor the spiritual life of the child by inviting them to internalize biblical truths in their own way. This evidences a profound trust that God is already and always with the child. According to Sophia Cavalleti, the developer of the Catechesis approach, the catechists are "matchmakers" between God and the child. I am currently working with Shawn and catechists at Grace to put together this children's program for the fall. We are in need of volunteers to be "matchmakers" between God and children. Please connect with Shawn or me (kendall@graceoakpark.org) for more information. Parents, look for an open house in the fall with more information on Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. - Kendall Batten Kalantzis

In Thanksgiving For a Wonderful Organ Benefit Concert
|
And a grand time was had by all!
|
Last Thursday, after Evensong, nearly 100 people gathered in the Sanctuary for a fundraising recital for our 1922 pipe organ. Even before entering the church, guests were greeted by smiles and something cool to drink and something sweet to eat by the Thrive team. Thank you, outside greeters! Then, upon entering they were given programs by faithful 6:26 attendees. Thank you Karen, Tony and Bob! The Sanctuary, the quiet fans on, was a beautiful place to watch the setting sun through the stained glass windows and listen to beautiful music. Then, the audience was treated to a performance so electrifying that our artist, our beloved Charlie Carpenter, came out for not one, but TWO standing ovations! Charlie played a virtuoso concert of Bach and Dupré. Afterward, thanks to Julie and Rob Carpenter, our artist was received in the Memorial Garden by his ardent fans! Thank you Julie and Rob!
Year-to-date gifts to the organ fund total $6,439 -- over $5K of that amount came from the recital, and just prior to. Many thanks to all for your support and generosity, and for caring for our venerable instrument!
Faithfully,
Dennis Northway, Parish Musician
