What is this Place?

"What is this place where we are meeting? Only a house, the earth its floor. Walls and roof sheltering people, windows for light an open door. Yet it becomes a body that lives when we are gathered here, and know our God is near."

These words, from "What Is This Place" - Hymn No. 1 in Hymnal: A Worship Book - are applicable to the walls, windows and doors of this worship space that has been here for 135 years.

The staff, members, guests, vestry and community are standing on the shoulders of thousands who came before them, who built this institution brick by brick, song by song, faith by faith and ministry by ministry.

The final words of the hymn capture the essence of what God and Grace Church provides: "This is the place where we can receive what we need to increase: God's justice and God's peace."

This past Sunday we had our annual meeting where we elected new officers, broke bread and prayed together and were ultimately sent forth to love and serve God and Christ in all that we do in and outside of these walls.

We spent just a few minutes answering three questions: What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Grace? If you could start any new ministry at Grace what might it be? What is your greatest hope for 2015? The energy in the room was palpable.

I remember reminding us that when we spend time focusing on where God is calling us to go and who God is calling us to be, we can move mountains. When we focus on vision and the gospel, what bonds us is greater than what divides us.

With this experience in mind, I am inviting you -- and the THRIVE Team (our group that is working with other congregations around the topics of congregational vitality) -- is inviting you to a more extensive session that will be like our few minutes from the Annual Meeting.

We will gather on March 1 at 9:40AM (services on that day only will be at 9 and 11). Our time will be spent in deep and exciting conversations around a few topics. More information will be coming. Every Sunday during Lent we will have sessions after each service.

I pray that we will use this time together to create our own Resurrection Stories.

Peace,

-Shawn

Pre-Lent Breakfast This Sunday
February 15, 9:30AM - 12:30PM
In addition to the Shrove Tuesday Chili Cook-Off on February 17 (see separate article below), we're also holding a Pre-Lent Breakfast this Sunday, February 15.

Join us anytime between 9:30 AM and 12:15 PM for a delicious breakfast! We will have a variety of breakfast dishes including gluten-free and vegetarian choices.

Heading to the Handel Week Concert that afternoon and afraid after the 10:30 service is too late for you? Come at 9:30 and join the fun.

The breakfast will end by 12:30 so that we can have the Parish Hall and kitchen cleaned up by 1PM for the Handel Week pre-concert lecture and concert.

Food will be provided. You are also free to bring a breakfast dish to share.

You may also give a small donation towards the cost.

We need volunteers to set up, cook, serve and clean up. Click here to sign up to volunteer.

P.S. Bring your palms so we can get them ready for Ash Wednesday.
Shrove Tuesday Chili Cook-Off
Tuesday, February 17, 6PM
Chili

Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Tuesday, Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, and Fat Tuesday) is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.

Historically speaking, this is the day when folks around the world gather and clean out all of the fattening items from their lives as they take the journey from Lent to Easter.

Around Grace we have had Pancake Suppers, Mardi Gras Parties, Chili Competitions and more.

We are bringing back our famous chili competition.   Feel free to bring chili or toppings to share or just show up on Tuesday, February 17, from 6:00 - 7:30PM.

There will be a free-will offering; proceeds will be divided between the Journey to Adulthood group (as they prepare for a pilgrimage) and Grace Church.

Invite friends! Join the event on Facebook, or sign up here.

Holy Women and Men
Frances Joseph Gaudet

For the next several weeks, we will be commemorating a holy woman or man in the Prayers of the People at the 10:30 liturgy. Since some of these saints are not well known, we are including brief biographies in e-Items.

This week we will be remembering Frances Joseph Gaudet.

Frances Joseph Gaudet, 1861 - 1934

Frances was born in a log cabin in Holmesville, Mississippi, in 1861, of African American and Native American descent. Raised by her grandparents, she later went to live with a brother in New Orleans where she attended school and Straight College.

While still a young woman, Gaudet dedicated her life to prison reform. In 1894, she began holding prayer meetings for Black prisoners. She wrote letters for them, delivered messages, and found them clothing. Later, she extended this ministry to white prisoners as well. Her dedication to the imprisoned and to penal reform won her the respect of prison officials, city authorities, the governor of Louisiana, and the Prison Reform Association.

In 1900 she was a delegate to the international convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in Edinburgh, Scotland. Gaudet worked to rehabilitate young Blacks arrested for misdemeanors or vagrancy, becoming the first woman to support young offenders in Louisiana. Her efforts helped to found the Juvenile Court.

Deeply committed to the provision of good education, she eventually purchased a farm and founded the Gaudet Normal and Industrial School. Eventually, it expanded to over 105 acres with numerous buildings, and also served as a boarding school for children with working mothers. Gaudet served as its principal until 1921, when she donated the institution to the Episcopal Church in Louisiana. Though it closed in 1950, the Gaudet Episcopal Home opened in the same location four years later to serve African American children aged four to 16.

Share Your Thoughts During Black History Month

We have all passed through - and indeed still are feeling the tremors of - almost unimaginable moments of miscarriages of justice: in Ferguson, in New York, not so long ago in Florida. In partial response, we have dialogued, we have marched, and we have listened to public officials renew their commitment to correcting long-standing inequalities experienced by black youth and men in general in criminal justice systems all across this country. We now want to entertain a sustained discussion here in our church community about how we go forward in addressing these issues as an intentional Christian community in the light of that experience. To that end, we are creating an opportunity for all in our church to share their thoughts on these events by depositing your written thoughts in a box that will be placed in a very accessible location at Grace. We are doing this during Black History Month, and will use these thoughts to open a series of discussions in the months following Black History Month. Please note that names are not required, but if individuals wish to sign those statements, they should feel free to do so.
