From the Rector

Shawn Schreiner

Back and forth. They went in and out. Touched the fence and went in and out again. This was the movement of the many prisoners of Auschwitz on the day they were set free from their camp. They needed to see if they were really free.

Yesterday marked the 70th year of their freedom and many of the prisoners are back at the camps where they were tortured, starved, witnesses to the death of many and finally set free from the camps.

Were they really set free? Some will say that it has been a lifetime of freedom setting. For them, going back may be one more step towards healing and a sense of freedom.

Jesus was all about releasing the captives and setting the human race free from all kinds of injustices. Our own baptismal covenant calls us to be about the same kind of discipleship.

As I sit writing this, I am very aware that my life has not been filled with the horror of war camps. I can not begin to imagine that kind of torture. I am so profoundly touched when I hear the faith of those who have gone before me, having lived through horrors cause by other humans.

Life has brought great joys and sorrows in my life. I am guessing that has been true for so many of you. How we use our faith and family and friends can be so life giving. It can free us in ways that are breathtaking.

What part of your life might need to be set free? How might you be the one who assists with the freedom of others?

Peace,

-Shawn

Annual Meeting: Sunday, February 1st
Come and hear about 2014 and the ministries of Grace. Come together to meet people from all of our services. Come together to build community and to witness the power of the Holy Spirit as we elect vestry members (a board of sorts) and diocesan convention delegates. Come to share your hopes and dreams for God's Church.

We will meet at 9:40AM this Sunday, February 1, 2015.  Feel free to arrive by 9:30 so that we may spend time in fellowship together. Consider bringing a treat to share.

Yesterday you should have received an email containing the 2014 Annual Report, as well as information about those running for Warden, Vestry and Diocesan Convention Delegate. This information is also on our website at this link

You may be wondering who is eligible to vote at the Annual Meeting.

To be eligible to vote in parish elections at Grace Church, Oak Park, a person must:

●Be baptized

●Be age sixteen years or older

●Regularly attend worship

●Be recognized by the Rector and at least one Warden

●Be a member of a household which has contributed financially (in a traceable manner) to the parish at least six months immediately prior to the vote

●Be willing to conform to the Doctrine, Discipline and Worship of the Church

Please note: the second service on February 1st will begin at 11AM -- a half hour later than usual.
Coffee Hour at the Annual Meeting

We invite everyone to bring a treat this Sunday to share at our Annual Meeting. We'd also welcome a few people arriving early (by 9:15) to setup and a few remaining after to help with cleanup. Thank you!

Throw in the Towel If you have extra towels, kindly consider donating them to Grace.  They will be put to good use by those who are homeless and are our guests each week at our PADS Shelter Site.

You may bring the towels (new or gently used) to church on Sunday.

Thank you!
Share Your Thoughts During Black History Month

We have all passed through - and indeed still are feeling the tremors of - almost unimaginable moments of miscarriages of justice: in Ferguson, in New York, not so long ago in Florida. In partial response, we have dialogued, we have marched, and we have listened to public officials renew their commitment to correcting long-standing inequalities experienced by black youth and men in general in criminal justice systems all across this country. We now want to entertain a sustained discussion here in our church community about how we go forward in addressing these issues as an intentional Christian community in the light of that experience. To that end, we are creating an opportunity for all in our church to share their thoughts on these events by depositing your written thoughts in a box that will be placed in a very accessible location at Grace. We are doing this during Black History Month, and will use these thoughts to open a series of discussions in the months following Black History Month. Please note that names are not required, but if individuals wish to sign those statements, they should feel free to do so.

Organ Repair Update

What's depicted below may not look like much, but this is our choir division note pneumatics, pouchboards and reservoir going to the Buzard Pipe Organ Builders shop to be thoroughly restored! They should return fresh and ready for another 93 years of use in approximately two months!

Coffee Hour Sign Up - 10:30 Service
coffee_beans_cup.jpg

Have you thought about when you might host coffee hour?

Beginning March 1, two families will partner each Sunday to provide small snacks, serve and clean up. A sign up sheet for 2015 will be available this coming Sunday. Plan to sign up for two dates of your choice. Why not think about partnering with someone you don't know very well. If you are a choir member, think about partnering with someone who does not sing in the choir to make the job go more smoothly.

If you have not signed up by February 8 the committee will place your family in a slot as needed.

THANK YOU to everyone in advance for your part in making this work. With all of us participating, our usual Grace Church hospitality will be in evidence each week. And no stress!

Call or email Sarah Hunt with questions.
