One of the pleasures of being the Rector of Grace is welcoming guests into our magnificent space. Guests come here for so many reasons. They come to:
- worship at our various services
- join us in the Black Lives Matter Rally
- assist with the shelter for our homeless guests
- join in a Town Hall Meeting
- sing in the various choirs
- come to various concerts
- participate in the many recovery meetings
- just because and so much more
I always welcome them on behalf of the parish. They love to hear that part of the movie "Home Alone" was filmed here.
Last week, I welcomed some top public officials here for a Town Hall Meeting on Criminal Justice Reform. It occurred to me then, as it frequently does, that playing with the theme, "In this place, you are never home alone" is a profound statement about what it means to be a part of a community.
Jesus was always welcoming and hanging out with all kinds of people. Here at Grace, we do our best to model that in our life together and in our ministries. It is not always easy to be fully present with folks who are different from ourselves. Jesus asks - no begs - us to do just that.
We will gather on February 1 for our Annual Meeting. Hopefully we will not know everyone who comes. I say, "hopefully," because I believe that it is a blessing to be in a community where new folks are coming and opportunities for new friends are present.
Inspired by the President's State of the Union Address, Beatrice Spell wrote this:
Freedom
the flowers sway without listening, and the wind howls on its own. the mountain stands without falling, like our country together, unalone.
Beatrice Spell, age 8
Unalone. That is what it means to be part of a community. That is what so many people seek - for and in their lives. May we be a place where people never feel "Home Alone."
Peace,
-Shawn

Come to share your hopes and dreams for God's Church.
We are currently scheduled to meet at 9:40AM on Sunday, February 1, 2015. Feel free to arrive by 9:30 so that we may spend time in fellowship together. Consider bringing a treat to share.

Burns Supper This Saturday, January 24th
|
Reservation Deadline is Thursday, January 22
|
All are welcome! Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 7:00pm It is 256 years after his birth and those who love a good party with plenty of wit in poetry-reading, a wee bit of the dram and all the traditions of pipes and Scottish dancers will enjoy this toast to the Immortal Memory. Traditional haggis warm reekin' rich with champit tatties and bashed neeps, cock-a-leekie soup, and poached salmon that's on the menu for an elegant, adults-only party. A Burns Supper is nothing less than an almost ancient ritual. Dress is traditionally black tie or kilts (they are rentable) but at least evening clothes with as much plaid as you wish. We invite all guests to recite/sing Burns' poetry - that's the most enjoyable part of the evening. Please click here to let our emcee, Mark Woodworth know (by January 22nd) what poetry you wish to share so he can prepare the program. Cost is $40, which includes meal, entertainment and some first-rate single-malt Scotch and other beverages. You are welcome to bring your favorite brand to share. To avoid last minute payments on the evening of the 24th, please reserve your seat with payment by January 22, 2015 using the link below. Please name every guest. FYI, the St. Andrews Society Burns Dinner will take place on January 31st. Reservations are $125 for the same menu and entertainment as the Grace Church event. The dancers are from the same school as our dancers. They usually have a good speaker but no poetry by Burns charmingly read by the talent of Grace Church will be offered. Their location is the Union League Club, which - while more expensive - is no more beautiful than Grace Church! Click here to go to our website, where you may purchase your tickets. Please remember to select the number of tickets you want from the drop-down menu, and then type names of all attendees for whom you are purchasing tickets before clicking "Add to Cart". Thank you!

As many of you already know, Nick Currie, our Lifelong Formation Director, is resigning his position at Grace. You can read more in the email we sent about his resignation at this link. Nick's last Sunday with us will be the day of our Annual Meeting, February 1. Please come and wish him Godspeed. I am thankful for the work that he has done with Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (Children's Formation Program), working with teams to support and form new ministries with those ages 10 and into their 20's and 30's, as well as getting to know their families and incorporating them into the life of this congregation.
We are collecting a farewell purse for Nick. Those who wish to contribute should make their check payable to Grace Church, with "Nick's Purse" in the memo line.

Coffee Hour Sign Up - 10:30 Service
|
Have you thought about when you might host coffee hour?
Beginning March 1, two families will partner each Sunday to provide small snacks, serve and clean up. A sign up sheet for 2015 will be available this coming Sunday. Plan to sign up for two dates of your choice. Why not think about partnering with someone you don't know very well. If you are a choir member, think about partnering with someone who does not sing in the choir to make the job go more smoothly.
If you have not signed up by February 8 the committee will place your family in a slot as needed.
THANK YOU to everyone in advance for your part in making this work. With all of us participating, our usual Grace Church hospitality will be in evidence each week. And no stress!
Call or email Sarah Hunt with questions.

If you are interested in joining the rota of those who bake bread for our worship services, please contact Shawn Schreiner. We ask that each baker sign up to bake bread enough for one month. Currently we need bakers for July, October and December.

2014 Contribution Statements
|
Contribution statements for 2014 were emailed in early January, and mailed to those for whom we don't have an email address. If you didn't receive your statement, click here to email me and I'll be happy to provide another copy. In addition, if you haven't picked up your 2015 contribution envelopes from the back of the church, kindly do so when you're at church to save us substantial mailing costs. You'll find them on the table behind the back pew. Thanks, Douglas VanHouten
