What a gathering it was. People from around the diocese, Grace and St. Christopher's gathered for the ordination to the priesthood of Eric Biddy (our former intern). We heard about ministry and the call to live out the gospel in this time and in our places.
A recent post on Facebook by Eric has him thanking people for the love and reminding us to take the focus off of him and direct it to all those people out there who could use a little loving.
In a few weeks we will gather for our Annual Meeting and we will hear just a little bit about what has happened over this last year and we will hold elections for a variety of offices.
It seems to me that this meeting is just as equally about sharing our love of God and love of this place and love for one another. We gather as one church with many communities. We gather to continue to build community as one body with many ministers and ministries. We share love.
Come and gather and dream and meet new people. Come as the body of Christ.

Miqra at Grace This Weekend
|
 Please be advised that Grace will be hosting Miqra, a diocesan youth event, this weekend from Friday morning to Monday morning. During the event, a group of youth and adult volunteers will read the Bible, out loud, cover-to-cover. This, alongside a series of workshop activities and a retreat-style program, will help teens discover the Bible, learn about what's in it, why we should care, and how to read it. Teens from Grace or other congregations can still register for the event. Click this link for more information and for registration. Please note that over the course of the weekend, they'll be using the entire building, so please check first to see if they have an activity going on in a room before entering.

Burns Supper Set For January 24th
|
 All are welcome! Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 7:00pm It is 256 years after his birth and those who love a good party with plenty of wit in poetry-reading, a wee bit of the dram and all the traditions of pipes and Scottish dancers will enjoy this toast to the Immortal Memory. Traditional haggis warm reekin' rich with champit tatties and bashed neeps, cock-a-leekie soup, and poached salmon that's on the menu for an elegant, adults-only party. A Burns Supper is nothing less than an almost ancient ritual. Dress is traditionally black tie or kilts (they are rentable) but at least evening clothes with as much plaid as you wish. We invite all guests to recite/sing Burns' poetry - that's the most enjoyable part of the evening. Please click here to let our emcee, Mark Woodworth know (by January 22nd) what poetry you wish to share so he can prepare the program. Cost is $40, which includes meal, entertainment and some first-rate single-malt Scotch and other beverages. You are welcome to bring your favorite brand to share. To avoid last minute payments on the evening of the 24th, please reserve your seat with payment by January 22, 2015 using the link below. Please name every guest. Lil Hohmann and Stan Kaderbek will also be happy to accept reservations (with your check, of course) at church coffee hour. FYI, the St. Andrews Society Burns Dinner will take place on January 31st. Reservations are $125 for the same menu and entertainment as the Grace Church event. The dancers are from the same school as our dancers. They usually have a good speaker but no poetry by Burns charmingly read by the talent of Grace Church will be offered. Their location is the Union League Club, which - while more expensive - is no more beautiful than Grace Church! Click here to go to our website, where you may purchase your tickets. Please remember to select the number of tickets you want from the drop-down menu, and then type names of all attendees for whom you are purchasing tickets before clicking "Add to Cart". Thank you!

Coffee Hour After the 9:00 Service
|
For the last year, a team called the "Olive Branch Ministry" has worked very hard and creating hospitality with coffee and treats after each of our Sunday services. Their generosity has been amazing.
After a year of their ministry, we have decided to make a shift in what happens for coffee hour on Sundays. Please read the article below by Sarah Hunt for information about the new organization for coffee hour after the 10:30 service.
I am looking for a leader and team to help plan what we do after the 9AM service. The time between the services has members of the 9:00 worship service, ongoing bible study members, choir members and some of the leaders of the worship for the 10:30 service. Many of those folks are seeking coffee or tea to help manage the day.
Watch for an announcement about gathering after the 9AM service to chat about how to make this time as welcoming as possible.
In the meantime, know that coffee will be started at 9:00 by our nursery crew.
Peace,
Shawn

10:30 Coffee Hour - Back to the Future!
|
Why do we need Coffee Hour? We come to Grace Church each Sunday to worship together for renewal and encouragement through the liturgy, music and the Eucharist. The "coffee hour" which follows the service is a key factor in binding us together as a community. Here is where we connect with one another, build relationships, greet newcomers, exchange ideas and find our mission.
After experimenting with several approaches to making sure that a smooth running Coffee Hour happens we have come to the conclusion that the old method of taking turns as host works best. Therefore we, the "Olive Branch Ministry" propose the following:
The Committee will continue to provide basic supplies: coffee, cream, sugar, sweetener and juice. Small plates, cups and plastic forks will also be on hand.
Arrangements have been made to ensure that coffee will be brewed and set out with cups, etc. at approximately 9:00 am for the benefit of those who arrive early. Volunteers will not be responsible for this service.
Those who attend at 9:00 am will provide treats and manage set up and cleanup following that service.
Those who attend at 10:30 am will provide treats and manage set up and cleanup following that service.
With the hope of creating a workable schedule for the coming year with minimum effort for all, the committee will begin making assignments effective February 1 for 10:30 attendees. What could be easier? Coffee already made! All you need is some simple snacks and a smiling face!
If you have a preferred date you would like to serve, or if you are unable to participate, please call or email Sarah Hunt. THANKS!

2014 Contribution Statements
|
Contribution statements for 2014 were emailed in early January, and mailed to those for whom we don't have an email address. If you didn't receive your statement, click here to email me and I'll be happy to provide another copy. In addition, if you haven't picked up your 2015 contribution envelopes from the back of the church, kindly do so when you're at church to save us substantial mailing costs. You'll find them on the table behind the back pew. Thanks, Douglas VanHouten

4:30PM Sunday Service Cancelled
|
We will no longer be holding a 4:30PM Sunday service. We offered this service to help ease parking at the morning services, however, no one has attended this late afternoon service for the past several weeks.

Nominations for Vestry and Diocesan Convention Delegates
|
The nomination process for Vestry elections is now underway. Please take some time to consider whether your talents could be offered to Grace Church in this important ministry of leadership. Serving on the Vestry as either a Vestry member or Warden provides a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the future direction of the life of our congregation.
The election will take place at our Annual Parish Meeting on February 1. If you are interested in serving as either a Vestry member or Warden, please contact Shawn Schreiner or Mark Woodworth.
The nominating committee consists of the following members: Mark Woodworth, Barbara Larsen, Cherryl Holt, Natalie Ratz, Chuck Tupta, and Shawn Schreiner.
If you have someone you wish to propose for nomination, we ask that you contact Shawn or Mark first to verify that the person is eligible and then that person to ensure they wish to be nominated and are willing to serve.
The Vestry is the body within a congregation that, with the clergy, leads the parish. The Vestry:
- helps to discern the vision toward which God is drawing that particular community;
- articulates and communicates the vision;
- holds the community accountable for its realization of that vision;
- stewards of the property and finances of the congregation and
- keeps the mission of the Church and that of the individual congregation clearly before the parish community.
God creates the Church, and invites us to participate in the process. A congregation's leaders are the stewards of that creation and hold it in trust. The congregation has been given the resources needed to do the job God has called it to do. Leaders identify and allocate those resources, enabling the Church to carry out its mission. They also lead the congregation in celebrating and giving thanks for these resources.
To assist you in deciding whether or not to stand for election, the following are some of the requirements for, and expectations of Vestry service:
- All baptized persons of the age of eighteen years and upwards, who regularly attend the public services of the Church in the Parish, and are recognized as members of the Parish by the Rector and at least one of the Wardens, or, if the Rector be not present, by the two Wardens, and whose names appear on the books of the Parish Treasurer as having contributed by pew rent, by pledge, by subscription or otherwise to the funds to meet the expenses or other obligations of the Parish during the six months immediately previous to the Meeting, it being understood that the pledge or obligation for such contributions shall have been incurred prior to the said six months; and in addition declare their willingness to conform to the Doctrine, Discipline and Worship of the Church. (Diocesan Canon)
- Is expected to attend all monthly Vestry meetings and the annual Vestry retreat. If a Vestry member misses three or more meetings within a calendar year, it may be cause for consideration of removal (Parish Guidelines).
We will elect 4 vestry members and one warden. We will also be electing three delegates to Diocesan Convention at our Annual Meeting. If you are interested in serving as a delegate, please contact Shawn Schreiner.
