A cast of characters: The art of hospitality and evangelism

From the moment you drive up to and to the moment you leave, you are cared for. You are "welcomed home." Sight. Sound. Smell. Touch. Taste. All senses are engaged and considered as part of the experience.

Church? Maybe. Disney? Definitely. In our Thrive (congregational vitality program) gathering, we were presented with the pieces of Disney that offer excellence to those who come and those who know of Disney. As you know, they strive to be about: radical hospitality, creating a sense of home, and the ability to dream together (and so much more). We focused on the art of hospitality as evangelism.

Here are a few highlights about welcoming and hospitality:

  • Be our guest. Not a visitor.
  • Welcome guests at every point.
  • Excellence is never finished. Continue to develop the experience.
  • "Times and conditions change so rapidly that we must keep our aim constantly focused on the future." -Walt Disney
  • The vision of hospitality must be passed on to others.
  • Heighten anticipation for what is to come.
  • Engage all the senses.
  • Making dreams come true requires a lot of investment. Lots of roles.
  • Walk in your guests' shoes.
  • It's about being involved from the bottom to the top and demonstrating care no matter what your roles is.
  • Members who dream/work together create fantastic results.
  • Everything begins with a story.
  • Kick it up a notch.
  • Everything begins with a story.

What does all of this mean and look like in and for the life of the church? I wonder what thoughts and ideas are going through your mind as you read this. Share them with me and with others.

Peace,

Shawn

P.S. There is so much more to share from this session. Our Thrive Team is working on how we want to share what we learn at our weekend events. One way will be in articles and other social media locations. Forums anyone?

Parking Opportunities

Alas, the fence marking the beginning of the new development is now up. What does this mean? To compensate for the loss of 25 of our spaces, we now have access to an alternative parking location at the 19th Century Club. There will be an attendant who will ask if you are there for Grace Church or the Village Church of Oak Park. Grace members will have 25 spaces reserved at that location. The attendant will point the way. We will also have access to those spaces during the week.

Extreme patience will be required this Sunday with the Wright Races and new parking areas. This might be a good Sunday to come to the Sunday 4:30PM service.

Frank Lloyd Wright Races This Sunday
Plan for traffic delays
FLR Race 2014

The Park District of Oak Park's 38th Annual Frank Lloyd Wright Races will bring street closures along the race route from about 7:30 to 10 a.m. this Sunday, October 19. For those traveling on Lake St., the eastbound lane will remain open the entire morning. In addition, Chicago Ave will be open to westbound traffic only. All other traffic and cross streets may experience delays due to foot traffic. All of the runners and walkers should be off the streets by approximately 10:30am. Please review the course map at this link and allow extra time for transportation during the morning.

Did You Know?

The majority of the stained glass windows at the congregation's eye level were designed by Heaton, Butler & Bayne, a London glass crafting concern; you can find their moniker on a number of windows. Our forebears, thinking that it was an English Gothic room, chose an English stained glass maker for the majority of the windows of the sanctuary. Heaton, Butler & Bayne also supplied windows for Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The exceptions are the two windows in the East transept which are by the William Morris company and the two music windows in the entryway near the organ console that are by Willett, an American firm. The clerestory windows (up above) are by a variety of companies. The great liturgical East (actually North wall in our church) is of uncertain provenance, and we would be grateful for help in finding out its heritage of manufacture!

Our Mission:

Grace Church seeks to bring God's love and Christ's teaching to all people, to become a passionately involved, intentional Christian community, to support the spiritual journey of each person, and to work toward reconciliation, peace, and justice in our world.

 Our Core Values:

-Reach out to support our neighbors locally and worldwide as we seek to obey God's command to love our neighbors as ourselves.

-Encourage and support spiritual growth in all people while respecting that each person is at a different point in his or her spiritual journey.

-Work to be ever more present to and caring for each member of the Grace community and to be fully welcoming to all who enter Grace's doors.
