LOVE HEALS: Thistle Farms (www.thistlefarms.org)

Jennifer. Ty. Becca. Three powerful women who shared their stories with clergy and others at the annual clergy conference. Three women who some would say are victims of trafficking, prostitution, sexual abuse, addictions and so much more. Three women. Broken. Three survivors. Three Healers. Healed/healing through the power of love that comes from being in community. Three women who are changing the lives of others - one person at a time. Three women who truly believe and embody the notion, theology, philosophy that love heals. LOVE HEALS. Not hate. Not judgment. Not persecution. Not genocide. Love.

Becca is a priest who dares to be about the work of justice for women. She braves breaking open the bonds of the power of love to help reconcile and heal the world. One person at a time. One lost and broken person. She does not do it alone. Her faith and the women who struggle with their own brokenness, together, offer a place where other women can come off the streets and be loved and given a space to get their lives in order.

Jennifer and Ty are just two of the women whose lives have changed and who are changing lives.

The women who come to what is known as the Community of Magdalene are transforming themselves and others. They leave a place in their hearts and their home for the next person who needs to get off the streets or out of an abusive situation or a place to go after being in prison.

Becca's sense of justice for the broken and lost women of the world is palpable, contagious and courageous. It transforms more than women. For each woman whose life is saved, there are men and women around the globe whose lives are changed by the power of love, by the power of the story of transformation.

The justice work that Becca and others do through Magdalene and Thistle Farms is not just their work. It is our work. Our Christian faith is about loving the world. It is about social change. Isn't that what God did? Loved the world. Gave Jesus to us to love the world. Gave me to us to love the world. Gave you to us to love the world.

The work of Magdalene and Thistle Farms is profound. I would love to see us supporting their ministry by buying the products (store.thistlefarms.org) that they produce that will help us, as well as them. I would love to see us wrestle with how we can love-heal this corner of the world. I would love to see us engaging in love-healing work with anyone who we have harmed or who has harmed us. How could a church that is called "Grace" do anything else?

God bless each of us in our love-healing work.

Peace,

Shawn

Parking Lot Reminders
A reminder that part of our parking lot (25 spaces) will be fenced off and unavailable as of this Sunday.  An equal number of spaces is available to us on Sundays at the 19th Century Club.  Click here for a map to this alternative parking site.

To use the remaining spaces in our parking lot, please enter via the one-way driveway immediately west of the church. You may park in that driveway, or continue around to the east part of our lot and park there.  We will also maintain the six spaces that are at the back end of the lot and next to the Parish Hall.

During the week, Grace members may park in the east side of our lot and at no cost. Please only park there when you are actually at the church for church business.

New 4:30PM Sunday Service Begins October 12th

The staff and worship team decided to offer an additional service to help with the reduced on-site parking.

This service -- to be held on most Sundays at 4:30PM -- will be a said Holy Communion service and will last between 30 and 45 minutes. Come and share in our Eucharistic meal of bread and wine and a simple meal right after the service.

Significant Progress Being Made on Property Projects!

The Contractor under the direction of the engineering firm MFH Associates has excavated the exterior wall of the 1958 addition to the Parish House and poured a reinforcing footing. The soil has been backfilled by the Contractor. In the Spring plantings will be replaced. Interior work still needs to be done to tie in the wall to the floors. Also, a new Choir Door needs to be installed.

Tuck pointing of the Church, Parish House, and Rectory has been completed. Roof replacement and repairs are nearly complete on the Rectory, Library, and West Narthex of the church. New downspouts and gutters have been added where needed on the Church, Parish House, and Rectory. Three windows still need to be replaced on the Rectory. The exterior kitchen door and railings have been painted.

West wall work
A Note from Nick
Nick
As some may know, I have recently begun a full-time job as the Community Service Advisor for the University of Chicago's Community Service Center. This is a position that I'm very excited about, and a great opportunity to diversify my skills as I continue to work in the field of community and youth development. As I do this work, however, I will be staying on in my current role at Grace. I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue the work I've started and deepen the relationships I've built with folks of all ages in this amazing community.

Shawn and I will have ongoing conversations about how best to structure my time going forward, but wanted to take this space to clarify this change. I invite any questions you may have, as well as your prayers and good thoughts! I am thrilled to stay on in ministry with each of you.

cheese-wheel.jpg
Come hang out with the Grace 20s/30s group for a beer and cheese tasting in the Red Room (2nd floor)!

Here is how it works: bring 4 or 5 bottles or cans of your favorite beer, cider or other non-alcoholic beverage (craft sodas are pretty awesome!), along with your favorite cheeses or other snacks and share them with others. We'll have some snacks and other non-alcoholic beverages as well. Afterwards, we will conclude with evening prayer to thank God for the gift of tasty beverages, snacks and each other's company.

Your RSVP, to nick@graceoakpark.org, helps us plan. Bring friends, families, or partners/spouses. All are welcome!

Our Mission:

Grace Church seeks to bring God's love and Christ's teaching to all people, to become a passionately involved, intentional Christian community, to support the spiritual journey of each person, and to work toward reconciliation, peace, and justice in our world.

 Our Core Values:

-Reach out to support our neighbors locally and worldwide as we seek to obey God's command to love our neighbors as ourselves.

-Encourage and support spiritual growth in all people while respecting that each person is at a different point in his or her spiritual journey.

-Work to be ever more present to and caring for each member of the Grace community and to be fully welcoming to all who enter Grace's doors.
