Our English Gothic Revival sanctuary was designed by John Sutcliffe (1853 - 1913) who spent his life designing churches. In his life, he designed over 100 places of worship. In the past twenty years we have been visited more than once by his offspring eager to see a church that their great grandfather, or great, great grandfather designed. Grace though, was a special project for Sutcliffe because it was also his home parish. You can see a small painting done by him of the exterior of the sanctuary presumably done for the congregation to see what the church would look like upon completion. We can be fairly certain of this because it was painted by Sutcliffe, who died in 1913, and the bell tower was not added until 1922!

Silent Movie Night Returns to Grace
|
Join use on Halloween at 7:00 p.m. for a screening of the incredible science-fiction film Metropolis accompanied by Theatre Organist Virtuoso David Rhodes! Admission (pay at the door only) is $20, or $10 if you come in costume. Popcorn and beverages will be available.
Metropolis is the monumental 1927 German expressionist epic science-fiction film directed by Fritz Lang. Written by Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou, Metropolis starred Brigitte Helm, Gustav Fröhlich, Alfred Abel and Rudolf Klein-Rogge. A silent film, it was produced by Erich Pommer in the Babelsberg Studios by Universum Film A.G.. It is regarded as a pioneer work of science fiction movies, being the first feature length movie of the genre.
Made in Germany during the Weimar Period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia, and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city's ruler, and Maria, a poor worker, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes of their city. Metropolis was filmed in 1925, at a cost of approximately five million Reichsmarks. Thus, it was the most expensive film ever released up to that point.
The film was met with a mixed response upon its initial release, with many critics praising its technical achievements and social metaphors while others derided its "simplistic and naïve" presentation. Because of its long running-time, Metropolis was cut substantially after its German premiere: large portions of the film were lost over the subsequent decades.
In 2001, the film was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, the first film thus distinguished. In 2008, a damaged print of Lang's original cut of the film was found in a museum in Argentina. After a long restoration process, the film was 95% restored and shown on large screens in Berlin and Frankfurt simultaneously on 12 February 2010.

The Fauré Requiem at Grace
|
Please join us at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2014, for an Evensong commemorating the feast of All Souls including the choir's praying of the Fauré Requiem.
This service will honor those saints that have gone before us. It will be a time to celebrate, to grieve, to pray, to be quiet and to reflect. This service has become a treasured tradition at Grace. Feel free to invite anyone who has suffered a loss or is in need of time to reflect. As part of the service, the choir, accompanied by organist Michael Surratt, harpist Erin Freund, string orchestra and horns will pray the original chamber version of the Fauré Requiem as reconstructed by John Rutter. This ravishing setting creates a beautiful setting for the celebration of the lives of the faithful departed.

Parking in the Driveway at Grace
|
Only for those actually on-site
|
A reminder: please do not park in the lane immediately west of the church unless you are actually on site at Grace. Doing so presents problems with weddings, funerals, and other scheduled events. In addition, with ongoing building work at Grace, contractors need full access and cars parked in the lane while owners shop on Lake Street or commute to Chicago are going to present problems which will delay work. Thank you for your cooperation!
