This Thursday: A Very Special and Important Fundraiser for our Pipe Organ
Screening of a documentary on Charlie Carpenter, followed by a concert by Charlie
Our beloved pipe organ, built in 1922 is in need of ongoing repair in order to lead our singing of prayer and praise. This year alone, some $13,000 is needed in critical repair of two divisions of the instrument. We are delighted to offer an exciting and fun opportunity, in which you might participate, to support raising money for this necessary project. Our own Charlie Carpenter has been featured in an award-winning film documentary on his life in music by Oak Park-River Forest High School student Cosmo Coffey. We will be screening this 34-minute documentary tomorrow evening, Thursday, July 10 beginning at 6:26 p.m., followed by a concert by Charlie and a reception. The program will be offered in support of the repair of our Casavant organ. Admission (pay at the door) to the screening, organ recital and reception is $15 for adults and $8 for students. Donations to the organ fund in addition to the entrance fee are most welcome! Please contact Dennis Northway with questions, and please help spread the word! Can't attend, but want to donate? Little bits of recent travels of our Parish Musician
I had the opportunity to attend worship at Christ Church in Winnetka and got to witness a baptism of an adult during an 8:00 a.m. spoken Eucharist. It was very moving. Their 9:30 service is in a park by the lake and you bring your own lawn chair. They have one of the most beautiful Memorial Gardens I could ever imagine. If you are driving up Sheridan road, I encourage you to stop by for a visit; it is beautiful, spiritual and serene! While at the American Guild of Organists National Convention in Boston, I had the opportunity to pray Evensong at Church of the Advent. It was built about a decade before Grace. It also has the thin, large red bricks that I thought were unique to our Parish Church. I felt strangely at home!

Book Signing by Barbara Hughes
Sunday, July 20th at 4PM at Grace
On Sunday, July 20th at Grace Episcopal Church at 4PM, author Barbara Hughes will give a slide show and talk about her book about child sexual abuse. This program is recommended for anyone who has experienced sexual abuse and for those who work with abuse survivors. It may also be helpful for those concerned with this topic. The program is not for children. The book and slideshow contain Ms. Hughes original paintings which tell her story of abuse and healing. She will speak about the issue as she shows the slides. She will also talk about tools that helped her heal. There will be time for questions. Barbara Hughes (a Grace parishioner who attends when she and her husband, Fr. Bob Hughes are in town) is an artist, teacher and writer whose work is centered in the connection between art, spirituality and healing. She leads art workshops and retreats for abuse survivors and is co-facilitator of a support group for survivors of child sexual abuse. She has exhibited her figurative sculpture and paintings in a variety of venues throughout the country. Her Cathedral Nativity is the official crèche of the Washington National Cathedral. It is her belief that art is a powerful tool for healing inside ourselves and in the World.
