We Are Community
On Sunday, I put this on my Facebook page:
"Feeling very blessed to be a part of Grace. Today I watched folks gather to welcome many new folks. And I watched members reach out to others who are hurting. And I saw children trying their very best to cope with someone who has a mental illness. And I get to look out my window to our own Canterbury Cathedral looking Church. And love that a young leader at the 9 am wants to help setup a schedule for who leads worship. That is, which young reader leads the service. Not kidding.
We are not a perfect community. We have fought, laughed, loved and ... We are Community."
To this I add, "For a congregation that applauded when they heard about the wedding of Bob and Tony on Sunday, June 1 (during the 10:30 am service). For the many PADS volunteers. For the new energy around welcoming new faces to Grace. For all who lead parts of the worship service. For those who help form our children in the Christian faith and life. For a work day where we can claim our house and get to know each other."
To all of these ministries and to all of you, I give thanks to God who created us and called us to be God's people.

On Sunday June 8 (Pentecost Sunday), we will be honoring several groups of people: those recently received or confirmed in the church, interns, acolytes, choir, graduates and those participating in the Rite 13 Liturgy (come to see what that means). So, it is PICNIC time. We need volunteers to set up, buy food, get drinks ready, cook and clean up. Weather permitting, we will gather in the garden. The good news is that we have a couple lighter tables; we will not have to haul out heavy tables. Please contact me if you can help.

May 31, 11AM at St. James Cathedral
|
Please join us at the end of this month as we celebrate those renewing their Baptismal commitments in confirmation and reception to the Episcopal Church. Four Grace folks - Helen Thomason, Ty Davis, Judith Hanna, and Tony Riley - will be participating in the ceremony at St. James Cathedral (65 E. Huron St. in Chicago) on May 31st at 11am. We hope you can join us in celebration as they reaffirm their commitment to Christ and this community!

Spring Cleaning & Special Project Day
|
Saturday, May 31st, 9AM - 4PM
|
A Spring Cleaning & Special Project Day is planned for May 31st from 9-4. Volunteers are needed to help clean out several areas of the Parish Hall. We would like to beautify the Parish Hall by painting some areas, removing carpet & furniture from the teen room and perhaps do some outdoor work if weather permits. There will be jobs for all skill levels, come for a couple of hours or all day. Lunch will be provided. -Your Property Committee Leslie Atwood, Sharon Harmsworth, Lillian Hohmann, Cliff Hunt, & Mark Woodworth

Save the Date for Tony & Bob's Wedding
|
Tony Dobrowolski and Bob Vogler ask you to save the date, Sunday, June 1, 2014, so that you might celebrate their wedding at the 10:30 a.m. service. This is a celebration Tony and Bob want to share with the Grace community since they have been members of Grace almost as long as they've been together. This will be a further witness to their relationship that was first celebrated at Grace as part of the November 17, 1995 Integrity Service. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

Take Grace with you and your family this summer! How about taking "Flat Grace" with you this summer? Grace may like to go to camp, or go to work, or lay on the beach and soak up some rays, or travel to another state or country. Will Grace enjoy spaghetti in Italy or hiking around Illinois? Perhaps Grace likes to visit grandparents. During the summer many of us travel and we are unable to attend worship with our church family, but now you can always carry Grace with you and share Grace with the world. Let's see how many places these cut-outs of Grace can be photographed! Click here for a picture of Grace that you can print out and decorate however you like. Be creative! Scan, email, mail, etc. to friends and family vacationing or living in other parts of the world. Once you start collecting pictures of Flat Grace, feel free to post them on our Facebook page (Facebook.com/GraceOakPark). We'll also include them on a bulletin board in the Parish Hall. Do not forget to include your and/or your family's names and the location that Grace is visiting. This project was inspired by the children's book called Flat Stanley by John Brown. The character named Stanley is given a bulletin board by his father that he hangs over his bed. One night while he is sleeping the bulletin board falls on top of him and he is flattened. One positive that Stanley finds from his new altered state is that he can visit his friends by being mailed back and forth. This is a project that we would like the entire parish to take part in. Let's share with the world how much we love Grace!
