"On the Table" and Around the Table
And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.-Matthew 9:10
Our friend Jesus loved to gather folks together for a meal. On Monday night many of us gathered to share some dreams and hopes. What a wonderful evening we had. Imagine 20+ folks entering into conversations about what viable communities look like and can be like. We gathered and shared our dreams for our neighborhoods, our children, our church, our world and one another. The energy was palpable. We did not solve the world's problems and challenges.
However, we did all agree that we want to hear more about what the Chicago Community Trust (the sponsoring group) learns from other conversations and we want to engage in more conversations like this. It was quite clear that the group does not want it to be just about talking. We want to really dive into what we as individuals and we as a group might do to make a difference in the areas that come from our hearts' passions and desires for this planet of ours.
Look for more information about how Grace can further these conversations. In particular, how we can expand them to see what action Grace might be called to do because of these conversations.
On Tuesday night I sat "Around the Table" with the THRIVE Team - those of us participating in the diocesan-wide training around creating thriving congregations. What powerful and fruitful conversations we had. In a little over a month the THRIVE Team, will share what we have learned from the CAT (Congregational Assessment Tool) survey that many members of Grace took this winter. We will share where our energy is and where it is not, where some internal and external priorities might be, what we need from our lay and ordained leaders and how we value building relationships. We will begin some ongoing congregations about community life at Grace.
The THRIVE Team recognizes that we are taking a while to share this feedback. Our goal has been to be as thorough and thoughtful as possible. Last night we had fun looking at all of the data by age range and tenure at Grace. The goal was to see where we see life, what gives us pause, where is the hope and what information might we need from you to understand more fully who we and where we are. We thank you for your patience.
Take a moment to ponder this question: How can we work together to build strong, dynamic, viable and sustainable communities?

Our Presiding Bishop has declared this coming Sunday, May 18th a day of prayer for South Sudan. There have been peace talks between the two sides of the internal strife but there have been violations of the truce shortly after the agreement. Bishop Joseph Atem left Chicago on May 8th and returned to be with his family in Nasirobi. It is still not safe for him to travel back to Renk. The priests from Renk Town, including Mother Alice, have not returned yet but a report from the area said there have been no clashes for a number of days. The people are slowly returning back to their homes and to pick up where they left off. It is time to start planting and it is hoped they can return to some normalcy soon. As soon as possible, Bishop Joseph will let us know what is needed and give us a more detailed report of what is going on in Renk. For the time being, please pray for peace for our partner parish, Saint Luke's, and all of South Sudan to have peace. Here are some resources, including two videos: Episcopal Church website - Pray/Study/Act for Sudan

Save the Date for Tony & Bob's Wedding
|
Tony Dobrowolski and Bob Vogler ask you to save the date, Sunday, June 1, 2014, so that you might celebrate their wedding at the 10:30 a.m. service. This is a celebration Tony and Bob want to share with the Grace community since they have been members of Grace almost as long as they've been together. This will be a further witness to their relationship that was first celebrated at Grace as part of the November 17, 1995 Integrity Service. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

Take Grace with you and your family this summer! How about taking "Flat Grace" with you this summer? Grace may like to go to camp, or go to work, or lay on the beach and soak up some rays, or travel to another state or country. Will Grace enjoy spaghetti in Italy or hiking around Illinois? Perhaps Grace likes to visit grandparents. During the summer many of us travel and we are unable to attend worship with our church family, but now you can always carry Grace with you and share Grace with the world. Let's see how many places these cut-outs of Grace can be photographed! Click here for a picture of Grace that you can print out and decorate however you like. Be creative! Scan, email, mail, etc. to friends and family vacationing or living in other parts of the world. Once you start collecting pictures of Flat Grace, feel free to post them on our Facebook page (Facebook.com/GraceOakPark). We'll also include them on a bulletin board in the Parish Hall. Do not forget to include your and/or your family's names and the location that Grace is visiting. This project was inspired by the children's book called Flat Stanley by John Brown. The character named Stanley is given a bulletin board by his father that he hangs over his bed. One night while he is sleeping the bulletin board falls on top of him and he is flattened. One positive that Stanley finds from his new altered state is that he can visit his friends by being mailed back and forth. This is a project that we would like the entire parish to take part in. Let's share with the world how much we love Grace!
