Crossing the Line

The death of Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist Church, has made me think about the role of picketing and "crossing the line" that is so a part of our culture.

I have some memories of driving my father to work and watching him cross picket lines to get to his job.  He did not always agree with why the workers were out there, and he wanted to provide for his family. Driving away I would look to make sure that he got in okay and pray that he would safely return to us at the end of his shift. The picketing at his work was not stabs at the personality or "being" of the individuals. It was a statement about wages and more.

Indianapolis. Denver. Philadelphia. Fred Phelps and parishioners would be there.  I can not even put into writing the words that would be thrown at the women clergy who would go into our conventions. Graphic pictures of fetuses and gay folks would be everywhere.  My worst experience was when I got pushed down and spit on as I tried to enter the Convention Center.  God only knows what they would have done if they had known that I was gay.

Fred Phelps has done so much damage to so many people. From what I have read, his children and wife were abused in a variety of ways.

Marching for marriage equality. Marching against the Ku Klux Klan. We are a people who like to express our opinions and stand up for what we believe in.

When does it cross the line? When does it become harmful? I am not talking about freedom of speech. I am raising a question around what is right behavior as a moral human being.

For me, crossing the line comes when it moves us from the love of God to a kind of hatred that harms the human spirit, harms us physically, and when it demonstrates a kind of hatred that Jesus would find offensive. We know that Jesus was always demonstrating a higher way of living and acting.

I pray that the death of Fred Phelps will push us into conversations about how to live in our complex world in new ways of being. I am profoundly moved by, and thankful for behaviors that his victims have modeled since his death.  We understand that hatred can not be returned with hatred.  Hatred is best overcome by love.

Douglas VanHouten writes about his experience of forgiving Fred Phelps in his blog, Spirit-y'alls, at this link

Maybe the new movement, the new crossing the line will be a walk of love.

An Update on the Congregational Assessment Tool (CAT Survey)

Your THRIVE Core Team and Accountability Team would like to thank you for filling out the congregational survey. We recently received the results and we are studying them to understand how to best use them and present them to you. There is lots of data on strengths and limitations and opportunity for growth. This data is compared to other congregations in the US.

Rest assured that we will share this information with you.  We want to make sure we have a process that will be helpful to all.

Please keep in mind that the THRIVE process is a two-year process.

Due to an upcoming move, David Sgarlata had to resign from the team that attends the Saturdays meetings.  Linda Francis Sullivan (new member) and potentially Pat Gulik (already on the team) will be stepping into that spot.  Kate Gantzer-Hayes found the need to step down from the accountability team. We would love to have someone from the 9 a.m. service join this ministry.

Thanks for the wonderful participation (140 people) in the survey.

Peace,

-Steven Kvaal and the Thrive Team
