Paying it Forward Several weeks ago I went out to the Delia's restaurant for lunch or breakfast with a parishioner. As we were leaving, I noticed a small sign that said, "Paying it Forward" and next to it was a container with round plastic chips in it. Much to my delight I was told that they ask their patrons to give a donation of $2.95 to help pay for a cup of coffee or part of a meal for someone who can not afford it. They prefer that their customers not give to the panhandlers that walk up to them. At the same time, they value taking care of those who are in need. They call it, "Paying it Forward." During WWII, retreating German forces ordered the bombing of the Cathedral in Vienna. Those orders were ignored and it was saved from the destruction that had been planned for it. Not too long after fires, started by looters, broke out around the area and the winds picked up and landed them on the roof. It caught fire and collapsed. Luckily, much of the century old Cathedral was not destroyed. So beloved was this Cathedral, that rebuilding began immediately. St. Stephen's has an amazing history and I urge you to read more about it. Delia's Restaurant and St. Stephen's Cathedral are prime examples of Stewardship of people and places. The folks from Delia's understand that each of us has a responsibility to care for those who are in need and to do so in responsible ways. St. Stephen's history shows thousands of years of caring for their building and the people of Vienna. This past Sunday, when I came back up to the altar after anointing those who asked for healing prayers, I had the profound sense of being in a sacred space that has been around for years and has heard the faith stories and journeys of so many people (members and nonmembers). When I give of my financial resources to Grace, I give because I believe God has called me to support the ministries and organizations that understand the fullness of being the people of God in the world - to places that will strive to "Pay it Forward" like our ancestors. -Shawn

On Sunday, Suzanne Haraburd and Eric Biddy spoke of the ways in which we are called to give and the ways in which they interpret Stewardship at Grace.
You will be hearing more from others over the next few weeks.
Most of you have received an initial pledge letter. You will also receive some emails that tell you more about the story of Grace Church and how your giving impacts your life and the life of Grace.
Enjoy some words from Suzanne Haraburd: For those of you who don't know me, I came to Grace several years ago as a catechist of the Good Shepherd and stayed. Now I sing in the choir and conduct the Benedictine Experience with Chuck Tupta. I have taught Bible and liturgy for many years, and I'm always looking for an opportunity to teach. In talking about stewardship today and why I am at Grace church I need to talk about the liturgy. Since the beginning of time, salvation history has told a tale of God coming down to humanity and humanity trying to go up to God, moving ever closer to each other until, in Jesus, the embrace of heaven and earth takes place. God and humanity are one in the person of the risen Christ. In Christ, God's plan is totally fulfilled. Nevertheless, God's plan for full communion of God and all creation is not to be fulfilled in one person only, but in all of creation. This time of expansion, from the Resurrection to the Parousia, the time when God is all in all, is the time in which we are living. The fullness of God, meant to be all in all, is gradually accomplished in the liturgy. Liturgy enables us to enter into the mystery of the joining of God and humanity which is the risen Christ. The word liturgy means work. Liturgy is the work that God and we do together to spread the life of the risen Christ to everyone and every thing. Liturgy links us with history. It allows us, together with everyone who ever lived and ever will live, and all creation, to participate in the resurrected life of Christ. Through liturgy, Christ's death and resurrection is not merely a remembered event, but is present for each one and all, here and now. In the bread and wine God is already all in all. As we participate in the eucharist, we are filled more and more with the life and light of Christ. Therefore liturgy anticipates the Parousia, the time when God will be all in all, and helps it to come. This is the cosmic dimension of liturgy, the most effective action we can take to live the reality of resurrection here and now. Our role, our task, and our privilege, is to offer. The liturgy at Grace gives me life. Not only does it give me a particular bond with each of you, it unites me with all humankind, including everyone who has gone before us, and those yet to be born. Grace is the place where I can respond to Jesus' invitation to receive the gifts of Bread and Wine and be transformed. Because I am able to celebrate the great mystery of faith at Grace, I can look at the world differently and actively participate in transforming it. Because I am present at the liturgy and actively participating in the death and resurrection of Christ, I can do with him today what he has done and still does: "Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit" I am able to offer "these gifts," together with all of you, and each one of you; all of our lives, and all of my life. In his second letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul asks the Corinthians to give money they have promised before he visits them, "as a voluntary gift and not as an extortion." He says, "The one sowing sparingly will reap sparingly; the one sowing for a blessing will reap a blessing." (2 Cor 9:6) When Grace asks us to pledge, this is sometimes referred to as "giving back," and I'm tempted to pledge an amount that seems to reflect what I've received in the past year. Paul reminds us that in the kingdom of heaven the laws of giving and receiving are reversed: I will receive an amount that reflects what I've given. Remembering that it is God who creates in me the desire to give, and Christ who enables me to offer, I pray that we, the people who are Grace Episcopal Church, have the courage to sow a blessing.

Coming Soon . . . A New Ministry
|
Coffee Hour has long supported our community effort as we continue to grow as a congregation through this fellowship time. We have struggled for the last few years with Coffee Hour for both the early and late services. As a result, we'd like to create a new acronym! and a new ministry committee called the CHEERS Committee - Coffee Hour Efficacy and Entertainment Reserve Staff. This group of fine hospitable people would consist of 12-15 people responsible for providing beverage ONLY for the early and late services, each person having this duty once per quarter, no financial outlay, just that of time from 9am - 12n. Snacks, etc. could be provided by those celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, etc. during that week and would be purely voluntary. Those celebrating will be contacted a month out as a reminder to bring treats as they so choose. Those celebrating are welcomed and encouraged to partner with the CHEERS host for that day. In addition, CHEERS hosts will partner with the Newcomer's Committee to bring new congregants into the fold assisting with Coffee Hour while getting to know others. Anyone from both services can attend early or late, sort of a come and go "coffee experience". This not only offers a co-mingling of both services but an opportunity to grab a cup of delicious coffee at any time during the morning. The kitchen will be well supplied (thank you Sarah Hunt and Jane Shirley!) with coffee, decaf and regular, tea, coffee cream, juice for the children, lemonade/iced tea for the summer months, and appropriate paper goods. Assistance in learning the kitchen equipment will also be provided to those hosts in charge. IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SIGNED UP FOR COFFEE HOUR, please KEEP you hosting obligation as we get this ministry and schedule up and running. Please stop by our table at the Ministry Fair this Sunday to sign up as we start this new hosting ministry at Grace. -Cyndy Reynolds, Sarah Hunt, and Sam Love

The forum will be moderated by well-known journalist and PBS commentator Ray Suarez. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will keynote the event. Two panel discussions will focus on main themes: Racism in America today - why does it persist? And Racism in America's future - where is there hope for change?

You'll always find the lectionary texts at this link. Simply click on the date of the upcoming Sunday. Note: Grace uses Track 1 for the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and Psalm, when a choice is given. Questions? Email Eric Biddy.
