Offering of bread, money and wine

"In placing on the altar bread, money and wine, the congregation offers itself and its world. Money represents the work of the congregation. As in every sacrificial act of time immemorial, a part stands for the whole. We give part of what we make. That part stands for ourselves, for our souls, for our bodies.

Symbolically we offer the bread to be the body of Christ. But the underlying reality of the action is that we offer our lives individually and corporately to become the body of Christ in the world. We acknowledge that what we offer to God is, in a certain sense, but his all along, given to us in trust as stewards of his creation."

-Liturgy of Living

Charles P. Price and Louis Weil

Oddly enough, one of my favorite parts of each Sunday morning, is when we are in the midst of the Offertory (that place after the peace and announcements and before the table prayer). I love when the ushers and volunteers bring forward the bread and wine and financial gifts as the choir is singing and as the deacon and emcee are setting the table.

As is stated in the opening quote, this is the time when the essence of who were are and what we are about is placed on the table. It is a time to pause and give thanks for all that has been given to us and all that we give in return.

When I throw in my pledge or general financial gifts, I give out of thanksgiving to a God who has been with me since the beginning of time and for a people who feed my very being. When I take the bread and wine and let it wash over me and inside me, I give thanks to Jesus who nourishes the world.

Lectionary Discussion Group
Each Sunday at 9:35AM in the Parish Hall
Ever wonder what on earth is going on in the biblical texts we read on Sunday? Ever wanted to have a group of people with whom to experience these stories and letters more deeply? Then come to the Parish Hall each Sunday at 9:35AM. In between the two services, we'll be exploring the lectionary texts (the week's assigned Bible readings) together to learn more about their original context and their potential relevance for our lives today.

You'll find the lectionary texts at this link.  Simply click on the date of the upcoming Sunday.  Note: Grace uses Track 1 for the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and Psalm, when a choice is given.

You Are Invited to Bring Mementos of Loved Ones to Church
They will be honored at the Requiem on November 3rd

Help us to fill the church with the great cloud of witnesses by bringing pictures or mementos of loved ones who have gone before us.  They will be a focal point of the Requiem on November 3.

Feel free to bring these items beginning this Sunday, October 27 (please mark them with your name).  Please place your items of remembrance on the altar at the left side Lady Chapel.

Silent Film to be Screened at Grace on Halloween

Come to Grace Church on Halloween to see the incredible silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, accompanied by our grand 1922 Casavant Pipe Organ played by David Rhodes.  The show begins at 7:30 and is a fundraiser for Grace Church.  Admission is $20 at the door or $10 if you come in costume!  Drinks and popcorn will be available.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 1920 German silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene from a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. It is one of the most influential films of the German Expressionist movement and is often considered to be one of the greatest horror movies of the silent era in film.  The film used stylized sets, with abstract, jagged buildings painted on canvas backdrops and flats. This movie is cited as having introduced the "twist ending" in cinema.

Mozart Requiem & Evensong of Remembrance
Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 4:00PM
Candle

We all grieve and suffer loss in different ways, however, the Christian perspective is that death is a portal not a conclusion.  Join us on November 3 beginning at 4:00PM for an Evensong for the Feast of All Souls.  This is a service to mourn, pray and reflect.  Names of the faithful departed will be read during the prayers in the service.

As the conclusion of the service, the choir will sing the Mozart Requiem accompanied by members of the Handel Week Festival orchestra.  The soloists for the Requiem will be Nicci Krebasch, Susan Gosdick, Gerald Frantzen and David de Jong.

Kindly invite your friends to this moving service.
