"Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it Holy." In our gospel lesson last Sunday, Jesus got in trouble for healing a woman on the Sabbath. Folks reminded him that it was against the law to work on that day. And interestingly enough Jesus told the woman that she was free. Not healed. Free. Keeping the sabbath holy only became part of our history after Moses and friends reached the promised land. When slaves were truly free, Holy Sabbath came. What a concept and possible implications for how we live today. Slavery and inequality abound. Justice for all is still a dream. I am not sure we can ever have a completely Holy Sabbath until freedom rings for all. We can take a breath, we can hear the word of God and we can recharge ourselves; but we can not, must not ever take a Sabbath from working towards justice and freedom for all. Please think about joining me and others in forming a group to see how Grace can be about the challenge of letting the Bells of Freedom ring for all. - Shawn

50th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington
|
Grace's bells will toll at 2PM today in commemoration
|
Some of us were around on March 28, 1963 when the massive March on Washington for jobs and racial equality took place at the Washington Monument in the nation's capital; I believe many were not. So the anniversary of that momentous event in the life of this country is a huge thing. That gathering of more than two hundred and fifty thousand people, an undertaking of massive proportions, was the place where Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his now famous "I Have and Dream" speech for racial and social equality. Today, August 28, 2013 is the precisely accurate 50th anniversary of that event. Much has been accomplished in the time since then, but much remains to be done in both the areas King emphasized in his speech. And in a way, the current situation is more difficult than the one which contextualized the issues at that time. That points to the urgent need for us to find ways to creatively open up new conversations around issues of continuing racial inequality as well as the broader and more insidious inequalities that characterize our social and economic life as a nation. The contextual domain is now much more complex than it was in the 1960's, especially so because linkages between these two domains are so massively complex, and resistance to forward movement oftentimes so intractable.
It is the hope that we can, in our space, and in our own corner of the world, find ways to address the foundational justice issues which inspired the 1963 March then, and which still exist now, though in new ways and forms of expression in our more sophisticated time. Our baptismal covenant requires nothing less.
Sincerely,
Lascelles Anderson

Grace Church is seeking a part-time Director of Lifelong Christian Formation
|
Please join us in making a wedding quilt for Shawn and Vicki. We will supply fabric, pattern, tools and expertise so even if you've never sewn, you're welcome to join us. There will be a special cutting tool that is safe enough for children to participate so we hope families will join in as well, even if you can't stay the whole time. We'll cut all of the fabric during coffee hour following the 10:30 service on September 1 and sew from 9:30am until 1pm the following day, Labor Day, September 2 in the Parish Hall. If you own a sewing machine that you know how to use, please bring it as "Many hands make light work." Depending on how many participate, we may schedule an additional sewing day later in the month. We'll have a label at coffee hour for those who would like to sign it. Our hope is to have the quilt finished in time for the reception on October 12. If you have any questions, email weeks@modernquiltstudio.com. -- Bill Kerr, Weeks Ringle and Sophie Kerr
