Annual Grace Parish Picnic - May 19
Eat Hotdogs, Not Hostas!

Be sure to join us for the Annual Grace Parish Picnic on Sunday, May 19, immediately following the 10:30AM service.

An interview with herbivores: I took the opportunity to sit down (ahem) with the rabbits pictured above after I took said picture, to answer their questions about the picnic.  A (ahem, again) transcript follows, in case you might have some of the same questions.  -Douglas VanHouten

Bunny 1: We've taken up residence in Grace's gardens, but don't believe we ever transferred our membership from our last church garden.  Do we need to be members of Grace to attend the picnic?
Douglas: Absolutely not!  In fact, bring friends!

Bunny 2: We're herbivores, and have friends who are vegetarians.   Will there be options other than burgers and hotdogs?
Douglas: Certainly.  In addition to hamburgers and hotdogs, the church will provide some veggie burgers.  You are most welcome to bring some other dishes for you and others who might not want to consume meat.

Bunny 1: What with the Easter season now coming to a close, it's harder for us rabbits to find work in department stores and delivering candy, so finances are an issue.  Is there an admission charge?
Douglas: No!  The picnic is free.

Tutti: Can we assume it will be difficult for us to stealthily eat the hostas in the Grace gardens with the large crowd you're predicting?
Douglas: That would be a fair assumption.

Bunny 1: What help might you need?
Douglas: We could use help making lemonade and setting up tables and chairs the day of the picnic.

Bunny 2: We're branching out to social media outlets and have recently joined Bunnybook.  Can we join the event there?
Douglas: I must confess that I've not yet heard of Bunnybook; however, please tell your friends on Facebook that they can join the event at this link!

Bunny 1: What should we have asked, but didn't?
Douglas: When to bring side dishes and what to do with them.  Please bring your side dishes to church the day of the picnic, and put them in the kitchen refrigerator before the service.  Then, kindly bring them out to the garden after the service.

Julian and all women: "All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well."
-Julian of Norwich

Julian of Norwich seems to draw out the feelings of so many in her writing.  What is listed above is certainly one of her most well know quotes.  Her theology was unusual for her time because it was optimistic and spoke of God's love in terms of joy and compassion, as opposed to law and duty.

Perhaps the most unique theology that she offered to the world during her time was of God and Christ as both mother and father. While that may not sound so radical now, it was quite an unusual thought during her days.

Julian of Norwich

In many ways, she could acknowledge that both men and women have the qualities that so are stereotyped for each. I love this idea for so many reasons.  Particularly when it is close to the days that we call 'Mother's Day' and 'Father's Day.' These holidays can be a blessing and they can alienate people.  I wish that we would merely look at these as the days when we celebrate Woman and Men and all the complexities that come with being who we are.

As we approach the day that is called, 'Mother's Day',  let's keep in mind that it is a day to celebrate all women and the beauty that comes with being created in the image of God as women.

I love the following prayer because it captures the essence of my thoughts:

A Prayer for all women:

On this Mother's Day, we give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms. Let us pray for the mothers among us today; for our own mothers, those living and those who have passed away; for the mothers who loved us and for those who fell short of loving us fully; for all who hope to be mothers someday and for those whose hope to have children has been frustrated; for all mothers who have lost children; for all women and men who have mothered others in any way - those who have been our substitute mothers and we who have done so for those in need; and for the earth that bore us and provides us with our sustenance. We pray this all in the name of God, our great and loving Mother. Amen.
