From the Rector
This fragile earth our island home.
I find myself sitting and pondering the needs of the world, of this community and of all people for a more peaceful world. Tragedies in Chicago, Boston, Afghanistan, in our personal lives can overwhelm us and cause us to want to retreat.
It all makes me think of the phrase in one of our Eucharistic Prayers: "This fragile earth, our island home." Our world is in fact a place of fragility. It is in all parts of our lives.
As people of faith, we have a responsibility to care for all of God's creatures. This task is not always easy and sometimes we don't know where to begin. God. Starting with prayer and faith in God and using God and Christ as examples of how to treat one another and how to be a change agent is a calling that we all have. This fragile earth our island home needs us. How about using the prayer of St. Francis as a starting point?
The Prayer of St. Francis:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

Lining the Funeral Procession Route for Anne Smedinghoff
This information comes from the Village of River Forest:
The River Forest Service Club has asked for the following message to be sent to the Community:
The River Forest Service Club would like to encourage all River Forest residents to show their appreciation for Anne's service to our country and her and her family's ultimate sacrifice for our country by lining the funeral procession route as it leaves the Village. This show of respect has already been approved by her family.
The funeral on Wednesday, April 17, will begin at 10:30 AM at St. Luke's Church at Lake and Lathrop in River Forest, and will last approximately 60-90 minutes.
The funeral procession route is as follows:
Proceeding NORTH on ASHLAND AVE to CHICAGO. Then EAST on CHICAGO to LATHROP. Then NORTH on LATHROP to AUGUSTA. Then EAST on AUGUSTA to WILLIAM AVE. SOUTH on WILLIAM, passing the family residence to LAKE ST. WEST on LAKE ST to THATCHER AVE. SOUTH on THATCHER AVE. to WASHINGTON BLVD, thence WEST on WASHINGTON to QUEEN of HEAVEN CEMETERY in Hillside, IL.
The departure time from St. Luke Church is an estimate and the times along the procession route must be estimated accordingly. A full map of the procession route is at this link.

The Death of Cliff Hunt's Half Brother
Cliff Hunt's half-brother, Lee Marvin Eastburn died the evening of April 14 at age 91 in his home at Cave Creek, Arizona. Lee was a retired engineer who worked at Western Electric his whole life from age 20 to his retirement over 40 years later. He had 1-1/2 years of College at Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana. He then went to work at the huge Hawthorne plant Western Electric built in Cicero. During WW2 and after there were over 45,000 workers employed there. In spite of his lack of formal education he rose to the position of project engineer with Western, as high as you could go in the engineering side. He traveled all over the world for many years installing and troubleshooting radar installations. His last job was installing the radar and programming the computers for the Cavalier ND early warning site that was designed to spot the firing of missiles and hopefully intercept them. This site was decommissioned as part of the Salt treaty with the then Soviet Union. He presided over the decommissioning and then retired. He is the father of 5 children, Sharon, Martin, Emil, Karen, Eric, and several grandchildren. His wife Lola preceded him in death in 2004. Please keep Cliff & Sarah, and all of Lee's loved ones in prayer. |
Book Study Discussion Group to Meet May 1
The monthly discussions continue to take place at the home of Bets Howland & Dennis Zavac (309 N. East Ave., Oak Park).
The next discussion is Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. We will cover chapters 8 & 9 of
Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life by James Hollis.
Below are a few major points from each of these chapters that I found interesting. As usual I will send out some discussion questions a week or so before we meet.
Chapter 8 (The New Myth Emerging from the Psychopathology of Everyday Life)
Hollis goes over the many aspects of our culture that leaves so many spiritually wanting, and why various subtle and not so subtle addictions are so prevalent. He goes into one of the more prevalent goddesses in our current culture, "success", and says that our soul could care less about success, but our ego craves this goddess. He says that to free ourselves from all this, we must begin to view the world psychologically. I hope you will find his explanation of this interesting and helpful.
Chapter 9 (Recovering a Mature Spirituality in a Material Age)
In today's world, how is one to approach living the life Christ calls us to? Hollis lays out what he believes are the two major tasks of the second half of life: The recovery of personal authority; and discovering a personal mature spirituality. The adjective "mature" refers to his belief that we must go beyond our culture and our childhood to fully discover the largeness of our spirit's calling. He says, "Only what is experientially true is worthy of a mature spirituality." And such a spirituality expands us and tests us, it is not an easy road to take. He asks: Is this what Christ may have meant when he invited those around him to take up the cross and follow him? Among other things, he gives the background of how spirituality has evolved and teases apart the internal psychological components of a mature spirituality.
