Putting the Face of Grace into the Community

Facebook. Twitter. E-Items. Episcopal Daily. Diocesan Emails. Newspapers.  Word of Mouth. Your involvement in the Oak Park and River Forest Communities or Other Communities.  These are the many ways that the members and staff of Grace Church spread news, build relationships, and show the face of God and Christ and the Episcopal Church as lived out through Grace and her members.

It is not unusual for people to ask me how we share who we are. The list above is part of the way that we do that.

In the last year and last few months we have increased our voice outside of our doors. We do not do it just to show off or to make ourselves look good.  We do it so that people will know that the gospel is being lived out in this place and through these people and we want folks to know what we believe, who we welcome and some of how we do that.

A huge thanks to Douglas VanHouten, parish administrator, for his work with e-Items, Facebook and Twitter. Susan Montgomery, member of Grace, has also been quite active in recent weeks in assisting with press releases and stories.  I have made a few videos, been present on the streets with Ashes to Go, and written articles that made the news as well. Lil Hohmann spread the word to the papers about the Robert Burns Supper. Over the years Charles Wells has pushed Grace with the newspapers and various local activities.  Many others have done the same.

All of this happens because of connections that Douglas, Lil, Susan, Charles, I and all of you have.

Are you connected around Oak Park? Chicago? River Forest?  Your Community?  Have you made the news? Please feel free to share your connections and stories with Douglas and me so we have names to add to the list of our contacts and stories to share about the people of God.

Help us to spread the Gospel and preach the Good News!

A Birthday Evensong on January 27

Festive Evensong

Click here for a very nice article in the Oak Leaves about the Evensong.

You are most cordially invited to a festive Evensong and reception honoring the 90th "birthday" of our magnificent pipe organ! Our instrument, one of the ten largest in the metropolitan area, was built and installed in 1922. We will celebrate its anniversary on Sunday, January 27 at 4:00 p.m. Featured will be the Schola, Madrigal and Adult choirs of Grace Church and, Parish Musician Dennis Nort

hway will play the prelude and a mini-recital as a postlude of the Evensong. A festive reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

We are using this anniversary to celebrate the music ministry of Grace Church. Dennis Northway will play music that might have been heard in the 1920's and will also play Marcel Dupré's Cortège et Litanie to pay homage to the recitals from the 1920's and 1940's that were performed by him on Grace's instrument. To celebrate the current Parish Musician's tenure, the choral music for the service will be all composed by Dennis Northway.

We hope you will attend this festive event!  A free-will offering will be taken to support the organ and music programs at Grace.

Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

We received the following note of thanks from a parent from Sandy Hook Elementary School in response to the above-pictured card. Thanks to all who made snowflakes, to Sue Wells for producing the card, and to Susan Montgomery for ensuring its delivery.

I can't thank you and your church enough for your thoughtfulness. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, and we couldn't be more thankful. I promise that I will print and share your picture with our school community. I can start first thing tomorrow morning by showing it first to my second grader and then at our PTA meeting. Thank you so much for reaching out to us. It means the world.

Bread Bakers Needed

Many of us enjoy taking communion with "real" bread and there is a steady group of bakers who provide us with bread month by month. We need one more baker to make bread for November or December (your choice). Baking bread for communion is a pleasant way to contribute to our worship and can be done at home on your own schedule.   We bake small loaves for easier handling at the altar and you may choose the recipe (but one without eggs). There is also a recipe for a flat type of loaf that several of the bakers use. When it is your month, you would bring your loaves to the kitchen freezer before the Sunday that it is needed. You would be responsible for checking the freezer throughout the month to be sure there is enough bread during your month, especially if your assigned month includes a holiday and if a funeral is scheduled. Please email me at lilhohmann@sbcglobal.net or call me, 708-848-9066 if you would enjoy contributing in this way. Thank you.

Pledge Update

As of today, we have received 68 pledges for 2013 totaling $202,305.  Our 2013 budget calls for $261,500 in pledge income.  Anything above that will be a blessing for us.  A pledge base of $281,000 or more would allow us to support our ministries almost entirely through pledges.  We can do it and we need you to help us get there.

Please help us reach our goal by submitting a pledge at this link.
