From the Rector
 A Behind-the-Scenes Phenomena She certainly will not be comfortable with that title. Organizing people, reviewing the schedules, cleaning the vessels, preparing for Holy Days, making sure that the church was ready was what she did so magnificently. Mary Ann Urbashich has just stepped down as our Altar Guild/Sacristan Chair. Her dedication, love of liturgy, love of God and love of Grace have been the central pieces that have allowed of us to worship in this church we call Grace. On behalf of the staff, vestry and congregation, I thank you Mary Ann for all that you have done. You have followed in the footsteps of Hella Westbrook, Jean Radford, Chuck Tupta and the many other leaders who have served our 134 year history. Thank you! I am pleased to announce that Al Papillon, member of the 9 am service and Hansi Kess, member of the 10:30, have stepped in to lead the already amazing team of Altar Guild members. They have made a commitment through May and will gather with me and others at that time to see where the leadership is going next. Please also thank all of the members of the Altar Guild who so faithfully and quietly prepare Grace for worship: Joan Anderson, Doug Lucé, Sally Prescott, Willie Polite, Heather Bovell, Flora Green, Jane Shirley, Marie Rock, Natalie Ratz, Kathy Onayemi, Al Papillon and Hansi Kess (and Lil Hohmann as bread baker coordinator). Speaking of Altar Guild/Sacristan Ministry: Are you looking for a way to be involved with Grace that gives you a sense of awe and wonder? Working with this ministry was one of my favorite volunteer ministries as a youth and young adult. I lived being able to go into my church when it was quiet, when it was chaotic and preparing that sacred space so that others could come and worship. Take a moment to pray about whether this opportunity might be speaking to you. We have folks who come on Saturdays, on Sundays before after the 9 am and 10:30 services, during the week and a vast array of other times. Let us give thanks to Mary Ann the entire Altar Guild/Sacristan Team! -Shawn shawnschreiner@sbcglobal.net |
Snowflakes for Sandy Hook Elementary School
School resumed for Sandy Hook in a new building. Parent-volunteers have worked to ensure that the students were welcomed back by a winter wonderland, with the entire school decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible. While they were asking for homemade paper snowflakes - as many snowflakes as we can make - to decorate the school, they are pleased to report that more snowflakes have been received than could possibly be displayed. Snowflakes from across the country hang from the ceiling, windows, bulletin boards, doors, and desks. Sandy Hook students will be allowed to take some home, so they will be replenishing them daily.
Even though the snowflake quota was met handily, Grace Church will participate in this snowflake-making initiative on Sunday, Jan. 6, immediately following the 9 a.m. service. Our snowflakes will adorn our own space in tribute. All are invited to join us in the Parish Hall. Materials will be provided but feel free to bring any additional supplies such as glitter-glue, etc. For information, please contact Sue Montgomery at msusanmontgomery@gmail.com. |
A Birthday Evensong on January 27
You are most cordially invited to a festive Evensong and reception honoring the 90th "birthday" of our magnificent pipe organ! Our instrument, one of the ten largest in the metropolitan area, was built and installed in 1922. We will celebrate its anniversary on Sunday, January 27 at 4:00 p.m. Featured will be the Schola, Madrigal and Adult choirs of Grace Church and, Parish Musician Dennis Northway will play the prelude and a 'mini" recital as a postlude of the Evensong. A festive reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Two separate contracts, one date January 31st, 1922 and the second, dated March 21st, 1922, the first for the front organ and the latter for the rear organ began the history of our beautiful 1922 Casavant Pipe Organ Opus 940 of the company. The Englishman, George H. Clark, the Organist and Choirmaster of Grace Church, was also the sales representative for the Casavant Pipe Organ Company of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. This instrument was to be one of the largest in the metropolitan area; and was put in in the same year as the organ at St. Luke parish in Evanston; both buildings designed by John Sutcliffe, a member of Grace Church. The head of the music committee Albert Cotsworth was also a great lover of the pipe organ. He and the Organist/Choirmaster envisioned a grand organ for the great space. They also wanted to make a splash at its inauguration! And a splash they procured. The most celebrated organist in the world at the time, Messr. Marcel Dupré of Paris was invited to play the dedicatory recital in December of 1922. It was a grand event. Messr. Dupré was also invited back in 1947 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the installation of the organ. A similar parish-wide celebration occurred for the 50th and 75th anniversaries of the instrument. We are using this anniversary to celebrate the music ministry of Grace Church. Dennis Northway will play music that might have been heard in the 1920's and will also play Marcel Dupré's Cortège et Litanie to pay homage to the recitals from the 1920's and 1940's that were performed by him on Grace's instrument. To celebrate the current Parish Musician's tenure, the choral music for the service will be all composed by Dennis Northway. We hope you will attend this festive event! |
Book Study Group
Our Book Study Group is beginning a new book.
The next discussion date is Wednesday, January 9, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the home of Cathy Tokarski and Bill Ford ( email them for address).
Our new book is Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life, by James Hollis. The book covers the journey of how to develop a mature spiritual life and find one's own personal authority when it comes to living a life with meaning and depth. The book's subtitle is: How to Finally, Really Grow Up! Hollis is a provocative and prolific author who tells it like it is when it comes to how to learn to listen to the deep calling of our soul and discover how to live our own unique full life as opposed to living out what our society, parents, or other outside forces think we should live out. The Book Study Group will cover the book in six monthly sessions from January through June.
If interested email Dennis Zavac at dzavac@aol.com or call him at 708-383-2376.

Twelfth Night: A Celebration in Song Sunday, January 6, 2013
Please join us for Twelfth Night: A Celebration in Song! when five superb Oak Park choirs present music of the season at First United Church, 848 Lake Street, Oak Park. The twelfth night, or the feast of the Epiphany, is often seen by people as the close of the Christmas holiday. This ten-year-old Oak Park tradition is an opportunity to hear area choirs sing the songs that have touched the hearts of people in their parishes throughout the Christmas season.
Movements from Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, music from Handel's Messiah, and spirituals by American composers will fill out the program. In addition, young Oak Park organ virtuoso Charlie Carpenter will play the music of Bach on the great Casavant pipe organ at First United Church. Festive songs of the season will be sung and there will be plenty of opportunity for the audience to join in the fun!
Admission is free; a collection will benefit the Oak Park Food Pantry. Don't miss this event - invite your friends! For more information, contact Dennis Northway. |
A Round of Thanks
Thank you all so much for your prayers, cards, food and support for me and for Vicki following my foot surgery. I am pleased to say that the healing process is going well. I am able to walk on the foot with the aide of a boot. Thus, I can get up to my office.
I owe a special thanks to the staff: Jon, Dennis and Douglas. And also to Clayton Thomason (and his family: Mary Hope, Helen, Julia and Bennett). Without their support I would not have been able to have the surgery when I did.
I will now be on the road to full foot recovery for Lent, Holy Week and Easter.
Blessings and Happy New Year to you all!
-Shawn

Nominations for Vestry & Diocesan Convention Delegates
The nomination process for Vestry elections is now underway. Please take some time to consider whether your talents could be offered to Grace Church in this important ministry of leadership. Serving on the Vestry as either a Vestry member or Warden provides a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the future direction of the life of our congregation.
The election will take place at our Annual Parish Meeting in January. If you are interested in serving as either a Vestry member or Warden, please email or call Shawn Schreiner or Mark Woodworth.
The nominating committee consists of the following members: Liz Flynn, Mark Woodworth, Jim Deuel, Silvano Brugioni, Cathy Tokarski, Shawn Schreiner and one non-vestry member.
If you have someone you wish to propose for nomination, we ask that you contact that person first to ensure they wish to be nominated and are willing to serve.
The Vestry is the body within a congregation that, with the clergy, leads the parish. The Vestry:
- helps to discern the vision toward which God is drawing that particular community;
- articulates and communicates the vision;
- holds the community accountable for its realization of that vision; and
- keeps the mission of the Church and that of the individual congregation clearly before the parish community.
God creates the Church, and invites us to participate in the process. A congregation's leaders are the stewards of that creation and hold it in trust. The congregation has been given the resources needed to do the job God has called it to do. Leaders identify and allocate those resources, enabling the Church to carry out its mission. They also lead the congregation in celebrating and giving thanks for these resources.
To assist you in deciding whether or not to stand for election, the following are some of the requirements for, and expectations of Vestry service:
- All baptized persons of the age of eighteen years and upwards, who regularly attend the public services of the Church in the Parish, and are recognized as members of the Parish by the Rector and at least one of the Wardens, or, if the Rector be not present, by the two Wardens, and whose names appear on the books of the Parish Treasurer as having contributed by pew rent, by pledge, by subscription or otherwise to the funds to meet the expenses or other obligations of the Parish during the six months immediately previous to the Meeting, it being understood that the pledge or obligation for such contributions shall have been incurred prior to the said six months; and in addition declare their willingness to conform to the Doctrine, Discipline and Worship of the Church. (Diocesan Canon)
- Is expected to attend all monthly Vestry meetings and the annual Vestry retreat. If a Vestry member misses three or more meetings within a calendar year, it may be cause for consideration of removal (Parish Guidelines).
We will elect 3 vestry members, one warden and one youth representative who is at least 16 (voice and no vote).
We will also be electing three delegates to Diocesan Convention at our Annual Meeting. If you are interested in serving as a delegate, please contact Shawn Schreiner.
