Happy New Year! That's right. Welcome to the Church's New Year.  Advent is the first season of the Church year, beginning four Sundays before Christmas. The word Advent is from a Latin root which means "arrival" or "waiting."

Below is a wonderful piece from a blogsite that I discovered recently. Enjoy!

Advent is best understood as a season pregnant with hope, with what is to come. Mary figures quite prominently in Advent, as she should. It is a season of the holy feminine - carrying something new within us, within our community, that which is waiting to be born yet needs time to gestate.

This wisdom, in part, is that a life of faith will involve cycles of waiting, when the old has been removed, but the new has not yet been born. God needs holy things to gestate within our souls and within our communities. These holy ideas, understandings, insights, and actions all need time to become. If they are born too early, at our demanding impatience, they cannot survive. God knows the exact time of birth. We, usually, do not.

And so we must wait. We must wait for the growth to begin, to mature. We must wait through the discomfort, even the sickness, as we allow the new thing to develop. We must wait for the labor pangs. We must wait for the water and blood to rush forth, heralding the birth. We must wait.

Advent draws us into this truth of life, of the immense importance of waiting. For four Sundays, we hear the cries of a people, of our own souls, wanting to know when, how, and why. For four Sundays, we encounter Mary, a young woman heavy with the holy Child gestating within her, waiting. For Advent, we stand in lines, pace the halls, feel uncomfortable, sit in tears even, at our frustration of the act of waiting for something, anything, to be born.

We do not like waiting. And yet, God knows that we must wait as God waits.

The poet Rilke writes, "You must give birth to your images. They are the future waiting to be born. Fear not.... The future must enter you long before it happens. Just wait for the birth, for the hour of new clarity."

Advent matters because it is the holy season of waiting for the birth. The birth of Jesus, the birth of new ideas, the birth of courage, the birth of new songs and dreams, and the birth of what God has impregnated within us that is gestating.

All-Ages Advent Wreath Making - December 2

Advent Wreath making On Sunday, December 2 after both the 9:00 and 10:30 services, come and join us in the Parish Hall to make your own Advent wreath for your home.  NOTE: You do not need to bring materials to participate.

There are so many ways to make wreaths and we want to give you options as to how yours will look. Kathy Garness, one of our Catechists, encourages us to check this site out for ideas:

http://homesteadrevival.blogspot.com/2011/12/simple-natural-advent-wreath-ideas.html

As you can see just about anything will work for presentation... silver trays to mason jars, bundt pans to clay pots. Be creative with what you have and build from there.

Here is how you can help:
  • Let us know that you might come so we have enough materials (it's okay to just come as well)
  • Go on a scavenger hunt around your house for items like: royal blue or cobalt blue ribbons, white ribbons, blue or white candles, styrofoam circles, evergreen branches, sheet moss, artificial greens (for those with allergies), white pillar candles and holders, other earthy items that you think would look good on a wreath, etc.
  • Let Shawn know if you have any of these kinds of materials so that we can decrease the cost of needed items as well as be good stewards of resources that are already out there.
  • Volunteer to help at a station

Come one! Come all! This will be a great way to build community.

The dreadful smell coming from the shed behind the rectory is gone! It was an unfortunate opossum that got tangled up in the hodgepodge of old machines, gas cans, bricks, barbeques, garden tools and hoses being stored there. The shed is cleaned out and has a new bolt on the door (courtesy of Scott Simmons) which will keep larger critters outside. But much more important is that a huge pile of old clay tiles (about 3,000) spilling over four pallets have been recycled and Grace Church is the richer by $1,600 thanks to a terrific group of volunteers who sorted the tiles and packaged them for delivery to a scrapper of clay tiles. If any name has been excluded, please forgive me, but also please thank a wonderful group who donned gloves and scarves to come at odd hours/days and got the job done. Sue Wells, Leslie Atwood, Sarah Hunt, John Seaton, Tamara and Jack Minaghan, Steve Fanning and Jim Deuel (who each came out on two days), Stan Kaderbek who borrowed a truck and made two trips with loads of tiles and Scott Simmons who also drove a load of tiles.  Additionally Hansi Kess and Scott made short work of cleaning up various overgrown spots in the yard and our lawn service finished the job by taking away many piles of yard waste.

The best part was the great group of people who worked together to clean up a very messy area. They came out as their schedules permitted and contributed despite some chilly weather, dirty work and not a few sore muscles. That's something very special about Grace Church - people give what they can when you ask. Thanks to each precious person who helped.

Suzanne Haraburd Presentation - December 1 at Grace

On Saturday, December 1st, at 10 a.m., in the Parish Hall at Grace Church:  The duties and expectations of the Christmas season can overwhelm enjoyment of this great celebration. Brief daily prayer can enable us to cultivate a spirit of joyful hope, and an ability to receive the spiritual gifts that can renew our lives. For those who long to recapture the true spirit of the season, Grace member Suzanne Haraburd, author of Women's Inspirational Daily Prayer, will talk about Enjoying the Spirit of Christmas; an Advent Journey.

Suzanne has taught Bible and liturgy; she has a MAPS degree from Catholic Theological Union, and has studied biblical Hebrew and the Hebrew scriptures with a Torah scholar, and has studied the midrashic method of Bible interpretation with Dr. Avivah Zornberg.

Suzanne will also give her presentation at a lunch at the University Club of Chicago, 76 E. Monroe, Chicago, on Friday, Nov. 30, at 12 p.m. Plated lunch at 12 p.m., remarks at 12:15 p.m. Non-members can make a reservation by calling the Book Stall at Chestnut Court, 847.446.8880.
