Called to be Stewards of Our Lives!

In hunting for articles about being "Stewards of Relationships", I landed on the below information from the website of a church in the Diocese of Olympia. I love the broad definitions of faithful stewardship and therefore am sharing it with you. Huge thanks to the Rev. Andrea McMillan for her work which so echoes my thoughts.

Christian Stewardship is:

  • the proper and generous use of our time, talent and money;
  • all that we do with our lives
  • about joyfully returning to God a portion of all the gifts which God has so generously showered upon us

"We are stewards of our lives "- by the Rev. Andrea McMillin

It is tempting to think that Stewardship is 'just' about money. Being a steward, though, is an essential part of being human. We care for each other, our lives, our possessions. Being a Christian steward, we understand that all of our lives are held in the hands of God. We understand that all of creation is held in the hands of God. All of this - our life, our love, our possessions - it is sort of 'on loan' for us to care for and nurture, and to hand on to the next generations. We have been given so much to care for ... we are:

Stewards of time - How you live your hours is how you live your days, how you live your days, is how you live your life. Never underestimate the power of ten minutes. Work, play, mission, ministry, and Sabbath rest are all related parts of time stewardship.

Stewards of relationships - We are always cultivating relationships with others. Do you spend intentional time and energy cultivating relationships with those who are most important to you? What does this say about who you value, and why?

Stewards of community - We each live in several communities: civic, religious, family, social. Our action and voice determines the health of our communities. How do you participate in the formation, sustaining, and mission of communities?

Stewards of money & material wealth - How you manage your money reveals your values. Your values direct your spending, sharing, and saving. This includes household budget, charitable giving, and retirement, education and other savings. Some of us maintain homes or businesses, and we are stewards of the material things in those spaces. All of us should have a will, directing the allocation of our material wealth after we die.

Stewards of God's creation - We are all participating at all times in the stewardship of creation. What is your impact? Your mind and body are a part of God's creation: what kind of steward are you in taking care of the gifts of your intellect, physical strength, health, and spiritual wellbeing?

The annual pledge campaign in our church is just one part of the larger stewardship picture. Your pledge goes to the operating budget of Grace Church: our staff salaries, utilities, building, outreach support, worship, pastoral care, and much more. Mission drives this pledge campaign - we commit financially to the church in order to support the church's mission in the wider world. This happens as we worship together, strengthen each other as Disciples of Christ in the world, and reach out to the needs of the wider community, where the need is greatest.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Grace This Sunday!

All are invited to the annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Grace Church on Sunday, November 18th. All are welcome, especially those new to Grace. The dinner takes place in the Parish Hall directly after the 10:30 am service. Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, butter and rolls will be provided as well as milk, tea and coffee. We ask each family to bring a bowl of vegetables, or a bowl of sweet potatoes, or a pie to share (enough for 8-9 people). We always hope it will be of the traditional Thanksgiving variety . . . please, save the pasta salad or angel cake for the next potluck.

Although it is free, in fact it costs more than a few dollars to make it happen, so for those who can do so, a donation would be very welcome. You might sponsor a half table ($10) or a full table ($20).

A few (3-5) helpers are needed to set up tables on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 17 at about 2:00 pm. Check in with Sue Wells or just come if you can. Also, the kitchen begins to hum on Sunday morning and helpers are needed to cut pie, take out rolls/butter, make coffee etc. If you have never ventured into the kitchen before, we promise to make you welcome and give you something easy to do. Hey, you might learn something new and you will have fun and get to know a few more people.

Kitchen Towels SOS

Did towels from the kitchen of Grace Church make a pilgrimage to your house to be washed?  If so, please bring them back by Saturday; we need them this weekend for the Thanksgiving Dinner. There are only a few towels in the drawer at the moment.

Thanks and many blessings to you for helping.

-Lil Hohmann

Interested in Serving on a Worship Committee?

Our worship together is one of the most important aspects of our life as a community of God.  Through worship, we celebrate the love of God as a community, lift our voices together in prayer, remind one another that true discipleship consists mostly in what we do outside these doors, and nurture the spiritual lives of all of our members-sharing and receiving spiritual food to nourish us for the work each of us does in the world.

This new Church year marks the formation of a new committee at Grace devoted to worship.  As Rector, Shawn will be the chair of the committee, and she has asked Charles Wells and Linda Coberly to serve as vice-chairs.  We plan to keep this committee small, to ensure its productivity-no more than 10 people (including chair and vice-chairs)-and it will include parishioners from both services, as well as Dennis Northway in his role as Parish Musician.  Shawn, Charles, and Linda have already had several discussions about the mission and role of the Worship Committee, to create a tentative framework for the work that will soon begin.

In the beginning, the Worship Committee will meet roughly twice a month (starting in January) to study the role of worship, our Episcopal heritage of common prayer, the ancient rituals on which our liturgy is built, and ways to refine, renew, and enrich our worship services today, within the framework of our rich liturgical tradition.  The Committee's mission will be three-fold:

  • To provide consultation and input to Shawn, Jon, Dennis and Douglas as they plan services with the goal of richly capturing and celebrating each of the traditional seasons of the church year.
  • More broadly, to engage in conversation about how to renew and deepen our worship life and serve the needs of our present and future diverse congregants-including potentially by supplementing our current services with additional gatherings on Sundays or during the week.
  • To promote formation activities relating to liturgy and worship-which may include committee members leading study or discussion sessions, sharing reading materials, and writing regular pieces in Items about specific aspects of the services, liturgical choices, music choices, and so on.

Regular meetings will begin in January.  Please let Shawn, Charles, or Linda know if you are interested in serving on the committee.  The wardens, Shawn, Linda, and Charles will be meeting in December to decide on the committee's initial membership and to make sure that it reflects a cross-section of our parish.

Thank you for your care and devotion to Grace Church!

Shawn Schreiner, Chair

Linda Coberly, Vice-Chair

Charles Wells, Vice-Chair

Confirm Not Conform

We are starting a class for our high school aged youth at Grace.  The class is aimed especially at those who just finished J2A, or those who didn't participate in Rite 13/J2A but are interested in preparing for Confirmation.  It will be a joint program with our sister Episcopal parish in Oak Park, St. Christopher's.  It will be led by Ani Soto from St. Christopher's, and Martha and Jon Baumgarten from Grace.

We will be using the Confirm not Conform curriculum to guide our discussions.  The goal of Confirm not Conform is to help us to look at what we really believe, and how to apply our beliefs to our daily lives.

Our first meeting will be at 12:15 on Sunday, November 18, in Room 1 at St. Christopher's.  St. Christopher's is at 545 S. East Ave., but you should use the Adams St. entrance.  This is at the same time as Grace's Thanksgiving meal, so we will be providing pizza for lunch.  If you have any questions, or would like a ride to St. Christopher's, give Jon Baumgarten a call at 708-369-5487, or email him at
j.d.baumgarten@sbcglobal.net.

Community of Congregations Thanksgiving Service

The Annual Oak Park-River Forest Community of Congregations Interfaith Thanksgiving Service is this Sunday, November 18.  For the last several years, this has been the Grace Thanksgiving service as we have joined together with others to give thanks for our lives, our community and the God who unites us.

Our community will gather together on
Sunday, November 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
for this annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at
Pilgrim Congregational Church, UCC, at 460 Lake Street in Oak Park.

Gen Kelsang Dorje, a Buddhist priest, will give the reflection. The service will represent diverse spiritual traditions as the community gathers in worship, finding peace and gratitude for God's many blessings. All community members are welcome and warmly encouraged to attend. There will be food and fellowship following the service.

Cathedral Shelter Christmas Basket Program

WORKING ON YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING LIST?
PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO ADD

ONE MORE SPECIAL NAME ...

Through the Cathedral Shelter Christmas Basket program, Grace Church will supply Christmas gifts and food for over 50 individuals this year. Grace will be providing gifts as well as Jewel gift cards for these families and seniors. The Outreach Committee has generously offered to purchase the Jewel cards, so those participating in the program need only purchase gifts.

 HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:

  • The names and gift requests of the members of Grace's families will be available in the Parish Hall after each service on Sunday, November 18. Simply choose a member of one of the families and sign your name on the list next to the person's name you have chosen. You can also contact Heidi Lukas (312-441-9772 or lukash@cso.org) or Emily Costello (708-253-3794 or eacostell@gmail.com) to receive a name and gift requests.
  • Cathedral Shelter guidelines state that you should plan to spend $25-$30 per person for gifts. This is only a guideline and, of course, the amount you spend is at your discretion. Please do not feel obligated to buy everything on the person's list. We recommend buying two gifts per person - one "practical" item (such as clothing, etc.) and one "fun" item (such as a toy for a child or bubble bath for an adult, etc.). You may also wish to confer with those Grace members who have chosen members of the same family in order to equalize gifts purchased.
  • Wrap your gift(s) and clearly mark the outside with the recipient's name and family number. Please place your gifts in a packing box (left open) so that we can more easily coordinate our packing and delivery to Cathedral Shelter.
  • Bring your gift(s) to the Parish Hall on Sunday, December 2. Please note that this is the last day for drop-off; if you need to make arrangements to drop-off sooner than this, please contact Heidi Lukas or Emily Costello.
  • Volunteers are needed to help load the gifts into Cathedral Shelter's truck on Monday, December 3 (exact time to be confirmed, but probably early to mid-afternoon). If you are available to help, please contact Heidi Lukas or Emily Costello.

Thank you in advance for your support of this very important program!
