From the Rector
One Faith, One Lord, One Baptism and One God of All
Our country and other countries have been going through so many emotions over the last few weeks. Devastating hurricanes. People losing their homes and their livelihoods. Others jumping in to help. Elections that polarize us. For some there is much hope in the election of the new president. Others not so much. And through it all there is one thing that unites us: A God who created us in God's image and loves us with great abundance.
Here at Grace we stand together in One Faith, One Lord, One Baptism and one God of All. We come as Republicans, Democrats, Independents, gay and straight, rich and poor, white and people of color, believers and skeptics and seekers . . . We come together to build community, be fed and be sent forth in the name of God the Creator and the Redeemer and the Sustainer.

Got Turkey?
You will if you come to the annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Grace Church on Sunday, November 18th. All are welcome, especially those new to Grace. The dinner takes place in the Parish Hall directly after the 10:30 am service. Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, butter and rolls will be provided as well as milk, tea and coffee. We ask each family to bring a bowl of vegetables, or a bowl of sweet potatoes, or a pie to share (enough for 8-9 people). We always hope it will be of the traditional Thanksgiving variety . . . please, save the pasta salad or angel cake for the next potluck.
Although it is free, in fact it costs more than a few dollars to make it happen, so for those who can do so, a donation would be very welcome. You might sponsor a half table ($10) or a full table ($20). A few (3-5) helpers are needed to set up tables on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 17 at about 2:00 pm. Check in with Sue Wells or just come if you can. Also, the kitchen begins to hum on Sunday morning and helpers are needed to cut pie, take out rolls/butter, make coffee etc. If you have never ventured into the kitchen before, we promise to make you welcome and give you something easy to do. Hey, you might learn something new and you will have fun and get to know a few more people. |
Confirm Not Conform
We are starting a class for our high school aged youth at Grace. The class is aimed especially at those who just finished J2A, or those who didn't participate in Rite 13/J2A but are interested in preparing for Confirmation. It will be a joint program with our sister Episcopal parish in Oak Park, St. Christopher's. It will be led by Ani Soto from St. Christopher's, and Martha and Jon Baumgarten from Grace. We will be using the Confirm not Conform curriculum to guide our discussions. The goal of Confirm not Conform is to help us to look at what we really believe, and how to apply our beliefs to our daily lives.
Our first meeting will be at 12:15 on Sunday, November 18, in Room 1 at St. Christopher's. St. Christopher's is at 545 S. East Ave., but you should use the Adams St. entrance. This is at the same time as Grace's Thanksgiving meal, so we will be providing pizza for lunch. If you have any questions, or would like a ride to St. Christopher's, give Jon Baumgarten a call at 708-369-5487, or email him at j.d.baumgarten@sbcglobal.net. |
Stewardship Reflection
We share this talk -- given by Nadia Stefko last Sunday -- with our e-Items readers as we gear up for the Stewardship Campaign (for the Operating Budget) at Grace.
I'm the first of several who, over the next few weeks, will share just a few thoughts about stewardship, as our congregational stewardship campaign gets underway and you consider how you will pledge your support for the church in the coming year. Since today is All Saints day-one of several feasts during the church year on which we renew the promises made at our baptisms-I want to focus my comments on the connection between baptism and economic stewardship. In just a few minutes, when we renew our baptismal covenant, the question will be put to us: "Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?" This question is, of course, a reference to the end of the 2nd chapter of the book of Acts, which describes the day of Pentecost, when the very first converts to Christianity were baptized into the faith. The story tells of how those first Christians were transformed in their economic lives: they sold their possessions and opened their homes to one another; they prayed together in the temple daily, and they ate their meals together, "with glad and generous hearts." When I was in Washington, DC, I had the chance to live for one year in a community that sought to model its lifestyle on that of the early church. We lived together from a common purse, and we shared daily in communal meals and prayer time. It wasn't an easy year, but it was a deeply joyful and transformative one. And my thinking about money in particular has been forever shaped by it. My housemates and I learned that it is a powerful and life-giving thing to pool our resources toward a greater good. And I think, that in that experience, we felt just a tiny sliver of what might have motivated those first Christians to transform their economic lives together as a result of their baptism. And so today, as we say YES to continuing in the Apostles' teaching and fellowship, I encourage us all to consider what that promise might mean as we decide, in the coming weeks, how we will commit some portion of our household budgets to the common good pursuits of this congregation. Thank you. -Nadia Stefko, Grace Church member and vestry member |
Thanks be to God Through the UTO
The United Thank Offering is a long-standing tradition in the Episcopal Church. Placing "thankful coins" in the Blue Box you have at home is also a tradition, one that is rich in spirituality and love. The United Thank Offering, or UTO, began as a part of missionary efforts of the Women's Auxiliary to the Board of Mission in 1889. Their goals that first year were to build a new church in Alaska and to send a woman missionary to Japan. They succeeded in both. Every coin from every Blue Box and Blue Envelope is given away in grants. Every cent you give, representing your thankful prayers today fulfills the dream for tomorrow's life and gives hope to people all over the world. A special UTO collection will be held on Sunday, November 18th. This is the same day as the Parish Thanksgiving Dinner. Your money and prayers have built churches, made needed renovations, fed the hungry, clothed the poor, provided shelter for the homeless and have provided care and support for those with physical, mental and emotional problems. You can pick up a UTO envelope in the back of church that morning. Please make your check payable to UTO or United Thank Offering. In our area, your offerings have enabled grants to be given to St. Paul the Redeemer and Messiah-St. Bartholomew, both in Chicago. At St. Paul's, the Supreme Bean, a coffee shop and youth center in the parish hall, provides a safe, healthy, clean and positive space for nearby high school students. Messiah-St. Bartholomew has used the funding to buy computers to start a technical learning center to help underprivileged youth and adults build skills for job readiness. The power of the Blue Box is unlimited. Keep one on the kitchen counter, on your dresser or in the car. It can be personal or shared by the whole family. Drop a coin or two in every day. It can make a difference in your life as well as the person receiving your offerings.

Community of Congregations Thanksgiving Service
Grace Church is excited to let you know about the Annual Oak Park-River Forest Thanksgiving Service. For the last several years, we have had this service be the Grace Thanksgiving service and have joined together with others to give thanks for our lives, our community and the God who unites us. Our world and country have so many things that divide us and just as many that can unite us. This service is one of those.
Community of Congregations Interfaith
Thanksgiving Service - November 18, 2012
Our community will gather together on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service.
This year's service will be at Pilgrim Congregational Church, UCC, at 460 Lake Street in Oak Park.
Gen Kelsang Dorje, a Buddhist priest, will give the reflection. The service will represent diverse spiritual traditions as the community gathers in worship, finding peace and gratitude for God's many blessings. All community members are welcome and warmly encouraged to attend. There will be food and fellowship following the service.

Cathedral Shelter Christmas Basket Program
WORKING ON YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING LIST? PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO ADD ONE MORE SPECIAL NAME ... Through the Cathedral Shelter Christmas Basket program, Grace Church will supply Christmas gifts and food for over 50 individuals this year. Grace will be providing gifts as well as Jewel gift cards for these families and seniors. The Outreach Committee has generously offered to purchase the Jewel cards, so those participating in the program need only purchase gifts.
- The names and gift requests of the members of Grace's families will be available in the Parish Hall after each service on Sunday, November 11 and Sunday, November 18. Simply choose a member of one of the families and sign your name on the list next to the person's name you have chosen. You can also contact Heidi Lukas (312-441-9772 or lukash@cso.org) or Emily Costello (708-253-3794 or eacostell@gmail.com) to receive a name and gift requests.
- Cathedral Shelter guidelines state that you should plan to spend $25-$30 per person for gifts. This is only a guideline and, of course, the amount you spend is at your discretion. Please do not feel obligated to buy everything on the person's list. We recommend buying two gifts per person - one "practical" item (such as clothing, etc.) and one "fun" item (such as a toy for a child or bubble bath for an adult, etc.). You may also wish to confer with those Grace members who have chosen members of the same family in order to equalize gifts purchased.
- Wrap your gift(s) and clearly mark the outside with the recipient's name and family number. Please place your gifts in a packing box (left open) so that we can more easily coordinate our packing and delivery to Cathedral Shelter.
- Bring your gift(s) to the Parish Hall on Sunday, December 2. Please note that this is the last day for drop-off; if you need to make arrangements to drop-off sooner than this, please contact Heidi Lukas or Emily Costello.
- Volunteers are needed to help load the gifts into Cathedral Shelter's truck on Monday, December 3 (exact time to be confirmed, but probably early to mid-afternoon). If you are available to help, please contact Heidi Lukas or Emily Costello.
Thank you in advance for your support of this very important program!

Graceful Needlers is Back (and New and Improved!)
Join us for knitting, crafting, eating, drinking, next Sunday, November 11 at 3:00pm in the Grace Church Parish Hall. I know we all have holiday projects to work on - this way we can get stuff done and have a good time!
We have decided to hold these meetings regularly the 2nd Sunday afternoon of each month. We are making this change for two reasons: 1. To make it easier for people to put it on their calendars and plan ahead for it in terms of childcare or whatever else they need to do. 2. To make it easier to promote Graceful Needlers more widely to the community at large. I think one of the most enjoyable aspects of this group has been getting to know some new people whom we wouldn't necessarily meet at Grace Church. I am going to ask if Knot Just Knits in Oak Park will post an announcement, and please pass the word along. Also, we are moving our gathering to the Parish Hall because it is a more accessible location. And it is right next to the church nursery, which has toys and play space for children, if parents want to bring them. At this time we will not be providing childcare. We will keep to the same meeting plan for the time being: 3pm-5pm working on projects followed by a potluck dinner from 5pm-7pm. People are welcome to join in the meal or not, as their time permits. I hope to see you next Sunday! Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions as we move forward for the rest of this year and into 2013. Best regards,
Hansi Kess

A Legacy of Grace: An Update
Great News! the generosity of parishioners has helped us to reach the financial goal for our Fall project. Our goal was $95K and we have now received $98K. As many of you know, there are many Capital needs at Grace Church. We are thankful that all Legacy of Grace gifts that come our way from this point forward will allow us to accomplish even more.
Work has begun this week on the boiler replacement project. As these projects are unpredictable in nature, we ask for your patience; there will be times when there is no heat in the building during this project (such was the case earlier this week) but we'll work with the contractor to make sure there is as little disruption as possible.

A Generous Gift Realized
It has been about a year and a half since Sally Prescott presented me with a generous farewell gift certificate to use at Harvard Nursery not far from Marengo, IL, where we planned to build a house. The occasion was the end of the year PADS Volunteers Appreciation Pot Luck at Grace on May 23, 2011. I would like to again express my deep gratitude to all who contributed to a gift which means so much to an avid gardener. We moved into our new house in late March of this year. It took a long time to settle in and begin landscaping. With the exception of starting a lawn and pastures, plantings trees, and building the fence, I have done most of this work. Lifting rocks and moving clay have been excellent weight training. The drought this year meant postponing most planting. Shrubs and most trees were put in recently. We decided to use the gift certificate to buy shrubs to plant along the garage. All who come to the front door will pass by them. I was also presented with a bird feeder at the PADS dinner. I will need to install it on a pole; this will be done next spring when we have a better idea of how we want to arrange gardens in the back of the house. This area is a daunting empty canvass. Two pictures are below; one of the house at daybreak and the other of the shrubs along the garage. Please feel free to drop in to see us if you are in the neighborhood as several have already done. We are one hour and fifteen minutes from Oak Park. Our address is 602 Menge Road, Marengo, IL. -Dave Radford
