New from GIUSEPPE RINALDI Barolo, Italy
The maestro of traditional Barolo
It's difficult to express exactly what Beppe Rinaldi means to so many people, both here and in Piedmont, for holding his traditional ground as the winds of change swirled around Barolo the last several decades. For him, there was really no choice -- the only voice he listens to comes from the land; his Barolos, austere and powerful, speak with stony authority, their full expression available only to the extremely patient. The 2011 harvest, a warmer and riper vintage, opens the door to more "accessible" Barolo from the single-vineyard Brunate and the traditional blend "Tre Tine." For devotees of Rinaldi, could opening a bottle of Rinaldi Barolo sooner rather than later be anything but a gift from the gods? Quantities very limited.
2011 RINALDI Barolo Brunate 92 pts. $175; Special price $148.75
"Surprisingly open for a young Rinaldi Barolo, the 2011 is round, spherical and supple. Leather, smoke, menthol and tobacco wrap around a plump, juicy core of dark Brunate fruit. The 2011 is almost shockingly accessible. The breadth and creaminess of Brunate is evident, but at the same time, the Brunate is also clearly marked by the ripeness of the vintage. 92 pts." -- Vinous
2011 RINALDI Barolo Tre Tine 93 pts. $158; Special price $134.30 2011 RINALDI Barolo Tre Tine 1.5L $330; Special price $280.50 "Rinaldi's 2011 Barolo Tre Tine is super-expressive and gorgeous today. Dark red cherry, plum, cloves, new leather, rose petal and mint notes are all wonderfully alive and delineated. The Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from Ravera, Cannubi-San Lorenzo and Le Coste, all in the town of Barolo. Best of all, the 2011 will drink well with minimal cellaring. 93 pts." -- A. Galloni
