aged Madeira is just that. Here is a selection of small-production, aged Madeiras, just-arrived at VINTAGES Concord location.
Barbeito Malvasia 20 year Special Reserve $100
"It has a powerful nose of walnut, smoke and ginger with a distant scent of an old English stately home. The palate is very well-balanced, with a vibrant entry of bitter lemon, quince, Oriental spices and dried ginger that electrify the mouth. It is beautifully balanced with a long, lemongrass-tinged finish that is extraordinarily long. Just 1,020 bottles produced. 93 pts." --WA
1988 d' Oliveira Terrantez $100
"There is a highly attractive creaminess as layers of roasted nuts, cloves and leather open up in the glass. This generous, sweet Terrantez offers outstanding length, with lingering notes of sweetness and acidity that intermingled on the, intensely satisfying finish. 93 pts." -A. Galloni
1978 Barbeito Sercial $150
"It has a lifted bouquet, almost light and airy at first, with scents of wax resin, linseed, sesame oil and walnut that waft from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity on the entry. There is a tautness and weightless quality to this Sercial, which boasts precise notes of bitter lemon, marmalade and quince mixed with chestnut and thyme on the focused finish. Elegant and refined, a succinct expression of Sercial. 94 pts." --WA
1969 d'Oliveira Sercial $165
"Bouquet of honey, white chocolate, rosewater and a touch of honeysuckle. It opens nicely with aeration. The palate is delicate, but nicely composed on the entry with impressive weight and volume. There is a seam of fresh ginger that is neatly interwoven into flavors of marmalade and Satsuma fruit. Softens nicely towards the finish. 92 pts."

1908 d'Oliveira Bual $560
"The 1908 Boal Reserva from D'Oliveiras is an unctuous, full-bodied wine loaded with dark maple syrup, tar, leather, licorice and sweet baking spices. There is superb density here and the wine shows terrific length in an intense style. The finish is long, bright and sweet. 94 pts." --A. Galloni
1907 d'Oliveira Malvasia $650
"It is deep amber in color. The nose is lifted and open with pressed flowers, orange blossom and a slight, rather distracting chlorine accent. The palate is rich and very spicy on the entry with expressive marmalade, orange peel and white pepper notes that build in the mouth. It shows good weight but it is lacking finesse towards the finish. It is a little unruly at 105-years of age, but packed full of flavor. 93 pts." --WA
