We are proud to introduce the wines of Luigi Maffini to our customers!
We first met Luigi Maffini in Italy over ten years ago at the Italian wine fair "Vinitaly." We had heard of this talented wine maker from Campania working with two of the most noble southern Italian grape varieties, Aglianico and Fiano. Aglianico is the grape in the great wines of Taurasi near Mt. Vesuvius (often called the "Barolo of southern Italy.") Fiano from Avellino, also grown near Vesuvius, is known for its rich and powerful character loaded with tropical fruit, a nutty almond note, and leavened by a beautiful powdery minerality expressed through volcanic soil.
Luigi Maffini is in an entirely different part of Campania, south of the Amalfi coast in Paestum. While inland, Paestum is close enough to the Mediterranean to benefit from its cooling influence in this hot southern region. Luigi's wines are the personification of a man steadfastly committed to achieving the highest quality standards. Through his wines, Maffini exploits the full potential of vinosity, pays close attention to expressing varietal character, and works to convey the place that is Paestum, culminating in the glass for us to behold.
Luigi Maffini has achieved critical acclaim, and has been awarded multiple "Three Glasses" awards from the Gambero Rosso, but his location on a "frontier" so to speak, has limited his visibility and he remains largely unknown. Through a sizable financial commitment on our part, and the help of a local importer, Carolyn & I are proud to present the "out of this world" wines of Luigi Maffini. Andrea Sottimano and his father Rino produce wines of outstanding quality from 13 ha in the Cottà, Currà, Fausoni, Pajoré and Basarin cru vineyards. Their Barbarescos are elegant, evocative, subtle and yet substantial. Through the masterful use of barrique, Sottimano Barbarescos are superbly balanced wines with sweet tannins, dark plum fruit, cherries, tobacco, roses, spices, herbs and licorice. Rinaldi's staunch commitment to preserving piemontese traditions, his rigorous methods of cultivating nebbiolo, and guiding it into barrel and bottle, results in a true, transcendent expression, full of personality and pedigree. Don't confuse Rinaldi's traditional Barolo with something rustic, harsh, and "charming" -- if you want to know what Barolo is, here's your answer. Pure, crystalline, yet loaded with the character and distinction that comes only from a master shutting out the external "noise," and continuing to make the real deal. It's all too rare these days.
