It is well
Darius & Cindy Johnston
from Darius Johnston

"Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband: is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well:"
(2 Kings 4:26 KJV)

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Hoaratio Spafford penned these words to the popular hymn, It is Well with my Soul, in the midst of tragedy. He had lost his son to scarlet fever, his business to the Great Chicago Fire, and his four daughters to a ship wreck. Yet his faith was not in the circumstances of his life but in God. Later in life, the Spaffords had three more children and founded a mission in Jerusalem to serve the poor.

The Shunammite woman was also in a desperate place. She had provided food and a place to stay for Elisha when he passed through her city. God had miraculously granted her desire for a child. When the child was grown, he fell ill and died. Still she said, "It shall be well" (v23). Then again when she me Gahazi, Elisha's servant, and he asked about her familiy, she said, "It is well" (v26). Elisha came to the house, prayed to the Lord and the boy was raised to life.

Can you relate to Hoaratio? Do you feel like you have lost everything or all seems to be going wrong? Our faith is not in circumstances of life but in the God that created life. Both Hoaratio Spafford and the Shunammite woman chose to put their faith in God during the dark days of their lives. Where is your faith? In God or in your own ability to work your way out of where you are? Once we learn that God is in control and His way is always better, our life will be better, not always easier, but better. 'Whatever my lot,' there is peace in knowing He is in charge, not me.

This week we start a new series titled "Family Farm." Children will learn that families are a lot like farms. On a farm we plant seeds, then water and take care of them. After some time, we get to harvest all of the amazing things that we planted. The type of seed we planted will determine what type of harvest we will have. It's the same way in a family. If you want to reap a harvest of love, then you have to plant seeds of love in your family. If you want parents who honor you, you must plant seeds of trust in your family. Throughout this series, children will learn to plant the seeds of prayer, affirmation, time, honor, obedience, faith, commitment, forgiveness, and sacrifice.

In this week's lesson, children will learn we can use some of the same principles of "planting seeds" in our family. Each day, every word we say, action we take, way we treat and react to our parents and siblings are all "seeds" being planted. If we want to have kindness and forgiveness in our family, we must "plant seeds" of kindness and forgiveness. They learn that you get what you plant. You must plant the BEST seeds so that you can reap the harvest of the BEST seeds in our family.

Toddlers & Twos:

Unit 3: I am Growing

I Can Talk

Our focus this week will be to teach the child to be happy he can talk.

Our Bible verse: "[God]...leads me." Psalm 23:2 (NIV)

Our action verse:

Joshua talked, and I can too.

God's people played trumpets. Toot, toot, toot.

Joshua marched with his feet. Stomp, stomp!

I am growing, and I just can't stop.

Unit 2: God is with Noah

God's Promise to Noah

Our focus this week is for the child to be able to tell that the rainbow reminds us of God's Promise.

Bible verse: "God said,...I do set my bow in the cloud." Genesis 9:12-13 (NIV)

Life Application: Promises: To encourage the child to keep simple promises.
